Sacred Symbols+, Episode 196: eFootball and the Sports F2P Revolution

There's no doubt that I (Colin) like to talk about eFootball where I can. Not only do I feel like it's important for us to discuss everything on PlayStation at least a lil bit; I'm actually intrigued by Konami's free-to-play soccer game for another reason: I truly believe it's the canary in the coalmine of what's to come for the sports genre. We won't be paying for full-priced, annualized sports games forever, and this may be the domino that pushes the next. To discuss eFootball -- the history of Pro Evolution Soccer and Winning Eleven, its dominant past, and its fall to a distant second place during its abandonment of retail -- I've invited Cristian Moreno on the show. Cristian hails from futbol-loving Ecuador, and he's in the Top 1% of global, ranked eFootball players in existence. So you know he has some serious bonafides to add to Sacred Symbols+. I was glad to welcome him, and I hope you enjoy our conversation.

I was kinda expecting to hear how much this guy spent on this F2P PES game so far :) or how he feels about the lack of content, maybe if he is in contact with KONAMI, how he thinks they will be releasing cards for years in the same game, with some "resetting" the stats? because it is possible that everyone will have 100-rated Messi at some point?

Lukas Kus

Indeed.

Colin Moriarty

Insanity.

Colin Moriarty

btw, Great episode…

About the PS5 availability in Brazil, it comes and goes, I have mine for almost a year, it costs about US$ 900,00.

Marco Maluf

There's an entire electronic version of the Premier League played on FIFA these days with the FAs approval. That's some pretty big crossover between sports and gaming right there.

Mark Whittington

Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

Great episode! American here who has played and followed football (soccer) my whole life, so this was a nice discussion to listen to. Good shit!

Jeffrey Petrie

Thanks for listening. =)

Colin Moriarty

Great ep. I've been a life long FIFA fan, the only PES I played much was 6, which was the only year I remember my mates all going with it over FIFA 06. Good work Colin and Christian.

Leeiscooljenkins

We will definitely keep the sports convos coming. Thank you for listening.

Colin Moriarty

Glad to hear my style resonates. I'm truly curious!

Colin Moriarty

Love the sports games discussion. I know the majority of the industry doesn’t really care about the genre so it’s definitely appreciated. It would be great for you guys to have a similar discussion about EA’s Madden, as they’ve lost part of the NFL exclusivity they’ve had for a looong time. Sports games are what introduced me to this great medium, and I really hope they get shaken up soon.

I love how you try to tap into things you aren't fully in the know about Colin. Your search for wisdom helps yourself and listeners like me.

Tonys_Always_Write

Thank you. <3 I would say maybe 15-20% of our audience is British.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

We shall see. NCAA is a great mystery.

Colin Moriarty

He is the guest, it's on him to do most of the talking. =)

Colin Moriarty

Love the deep conversation of F2P sports games vs paid sports games. He speaks so highly of the feel and bones of EFootball BUT the paid + games as service model has advantages to sustained daily support. My dream would be for NCAA football to come back as a F2P title with mobile tie ins but I know better, it'll be a Madden clone 🙃

Kendrick Luckenbach

Damn, this guy can talk! You can tell he's passionate about it though. Good stuff.

Honestly last week I thought about cancelling just because we all look at monthly outgoings sometimes, don’t we. BUT, I thought about SS and realised it’s the one show / series I switched on and listen to within minutes of you uploading. More than anything on Netflix or any other subscription I have. So, within a few seconds I realised how dumb it would be to cut off my favourite platform. Your content beats everything else out there. Unrelated question, how many subscribers do you have in the U.K.? Just curious.

Matt

Great episode! Someone get this guy a PS5 for a reasonable price! MY GOODNESS $1500!

Clay Layne

I do think it is worth mentioning as extra information. But PES going fully free to play as eFootball isn't necessarily the full truth. It is just the Online game modes and normal exhibition matches that are free. Konami's long term plan is to release the offline game modes such as Master League that were in PES for $15 each later down the line

Luke Aldersley

We talk about the possibilities!

Colin Moriarty

Cool. =)

Colin Moriarty

Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

As a fellow long time PES fan, I loved this interview and Christian you were fantastic, loved your takes on Konami

Luke Aldersley

The most important thing are the licenses. As long as EA has the license to the Premier League and other top leagues then they will have the advantage. I do agree with you Colin that this model might be the future for sport games and it worries me. Say a player gets traded, would the game update that or would there be a trade deadline upgrade for $5? I shudder to think about the possibilities.

Yiorgos

This is exciting! I was going to start playing this soon.

NuclearProstate

Colin Moriarty
