KnockBack, Episode 229 | The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Let's be honest: Nintendo 64 isn't chock-full of excellent, must-play games. But it certainly had its reserve of classics, and 1998's The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time -- the fifth core Zelda game -- is certainly one of them. In fact, for a not-so-small subsection of gamers, Ocarina of Time is considered one of the greatest (if not the best, outright) games of all-time. So, fresh off of recent playthroughs, we're excited to talk about it. From the jump to 3D to its amazing soundtrack, from its revolutionary Z-targeting gameplay to its rosters of memorable characters, items, weapons, and dungeons, Ocarina of Time was a masterpiece then, and it still is today. It's a reminder of Nintendo's true potential as the greatest innovator our industry has ever seen, and since it's one of the most-copied titles ever released, you also get to experience its lineage in most of what you play today. So let's get caught-up in the music, quite literally, and ping-pong between a seven-year period where things go off the rails, except for the heroics of one boy.

KnockBack, Episode 229 | The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

The way Colin explains how BOTW isn’t a Zelda game by explaining exactly what makes a Zelda game PERFECTLY describes BOTW 😅 Istill open world sure but that only serves to strengthen what makes Zelda so cool, which is again, just BOTW

Ronnell Leon DuBose

Colin I'm the guy that tried to give you the Joe's. I knew they were worth something but I didn't want to deal with going trough it all. I thought it would be cool just knowing you got some of them in your collection. I definatly would have just given them to you but I feel you were more than fair with your offer and I wasnt going to turn it down. Ps I find it hilarious that the boxes I sent you are just stacked in the background un touched. I pointed it out to my wife and she that's something I would do. I hope your nephews have fun going through it for you. I'd be willing to bet at least 90% of those figures are a complete set.

Breath of the Wild is the only Zelda game, or probably any game, that I’ve ever 100%’d twice…TWICE!. To each their own, but I think all great “art”, sometimes, as with The Beach Boy’s “Pet Sounds” or Blade Runner, that challenges your initial perceptions, will one day show the naysayers its true brilliance over time…hopefully, Colin, you will circle back to this utterly brilliant Zelda entry.

Kid-Organic

Ironic. =)

Colin Moriarty

So funny to me that Dagan first played this game at his friend, Duckie's, house. I have always changed Link's name to Duckie whenever I've played any Zelda game

Lee Davies

I wonder if they'd be as charming?

Colin Moriarty

That's very kind of you to say!

Colin Moriarty

Nostalgia took over, love Ocarina of time. The breakable weapons on BotW really took all the fun from the new game, but I would play a ocarina of time and majora’s mask with botw graphics any day…

Marco Maluf

This was a fantastic episode. Everyone knows this game is a masterpiece but people rarely go in-depth as to why. The last few months of Knockback have been phenomenal.

Tom Panzeca

It’s definitely a remake on 3DS

David

I've never heard anyone say it, period!

Colin Moriarty

That's awesome.

Colin Moriarty

LOL. I have those hard copies!

Colin Moriarty

We'll get to it on our show, for sure.

Colin Moriarty

To each his own. Seems like its own thing, and not Zelda.

Colin Moriarty

Sorry.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

No, I don't think so.

Colin Moriarty

Twilight Princess is the best traditional 3D Zelda game, IMO. Was actually quite surprised at Colin's disdain for the game.

Stephen King

That's be a day one purchase for sure.

Tonys_Always_Write

This was a really wonderful conversation and such a pleasure to listen to!

Jim Capron

Yo Col, wasn't Ocarina of Time on 3DS a full Remake. Haha

james glenn roten

Good episode. But I wish you guys went in to depth a little more on the dungeons. Would've been nice to hear your thoughts on the forest temple, Jabu-Jabu etc.

TROTMAC96

Sorry if this comes across too negative, but I don't really see how Breath of the Wild really betrays what Zelda is. I mean the first one was an open over world with dungeons scattered across, too. But really saying it's Skyrim/Fallout is what really gets me. Skyrim, I think, is farther from Breath than Breath is from the OG LoZ.

Kawaii Edgelord

Shoutout to Wind Waker. Really hoping that one comes to switch one day.

Will Hahn

I agree on not wanting a remake of this game. Ocarina holds up so well. They need to invest the resources into remakes of Link: Faces of Evil and Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon.

macdaddyx4

I also won this game as a promotion in a cereal box!

LinkaFresh

I was born in 85 so pretty much same experience of games and consoles as you growing up. When I 100% this game when it first came out my best friend took my cartridge from me and turned all my items into a fish. If you were to swing your bottle next to a fish and pause the game mid animation then switch the bottle to another secondary item it would replace it with a bottled fish… I was so mad! He also had my character die so when looking at your character on the profile screen, it read 001. It’s pretty funny to reflect on that today all those years later. The power of Knockback!

LinkaFresh

Colin. I love you man. Your my boy and you know this. But this trash talk of twilight princess will not, it can not stand. I would ask, nay implore you to dedicate yourself to playing it to completion. I’ve heard you say in the past how much you detest the opening hours. Yes it is slower paced but there’s good slow and bad slow. TP only wants to introduce you to the world at its own pace. Let you live in it a little bit. Whilst teaching the mechanics. The game is just so good. One thing within the Zelda community that I think is undisputed, even for those who are lukewarm on the game as a whole, is the dungeons. They are the best in the series. I’m begging you, from one naughty bear Stan to another, give it a shot. At least whenever you have an extra 40 hours to kill. I’m not angry at you Colin . I’m just very disappointed. Don’t let me be disappointed anymore.

Will Ellis

So happy this episode finally released! Best game ever and I loved your discussion. Though I highly doubt skulltula is pronounced like tarantula, I could be wrong. I’ve never heard anyone pronounce it like that.

Dakota Brown

I actually dunno if Dagan would like the Souls games, but I'm not a big fan at all.

Colin Moriarty

I like that lil N64 module they've got on there.

Colin Moriarty

Is it a remake? I couldn't quite tell. It looks up-ressed to me.

Colin Moriarty

The controller is an anomaly.

Colin Moriarty

Maybe if people vote for it! I think it'd be eligible now, no?

Colin Moriarty

He does enough, LOL.

Colin Moriarty

Two Pool episodes by mistake? 😂 Did you realize it at all as you guys were talking about it? Gotta get your boy Dustin on an Excel file with all the shows with topics discussed.

Bambi_Cobblestone

Great Zelda discussion, loved your perspectives. Would love to hear you guys talk about Link Between Worlds, bought it when it came out as something to play on a plane and it turned into an all time favorite.

Retlaw

N64 as a whole is underrated. Shame it’ll mostly be remembered as an underpowered console with a bad controller.

Brandon Soto

The 3ds version was a remake. It looks much better. I would like a more extensive remake with some guidance. I'm a modern gamer and playing this for the first time a few years ago on the 3ds I immediately pulled out a guide.

thefury4815

Colin, I did the same thing when the Switch launched the Nintendo Online N64 collection. Played OoT 100%. Thoroughly enjoyed it. It had probably been 10+ years since I played it previously. I also found that it holds up surprisingly well for an N64 Era game

Jack Sibert

I think you guys might like Demons/Dark Souls. I swear those games are spiritual successors to Zelda 2. Not a lot of people talk about that.

Jeremy Seal

Yeah, I don't even bother trying to get any of it.

Colin Moriarty

=)

Colin Moriarty

Yeah. It's not Zelda.

Colin Moriarty

It's so awesome. Emotional.

Colin Moriarty

I played Mario Odyssey fairly extensively and found it boring and sterile. Zelda, same. But maybe one day.

Colin Moriarty

Indeed. Two classics.

Colin Moriarty

!!!

Colin Moriarty

Accept it into you.

Colin Moriarty

=)

Colin Moriarty

It was!

Colin Moriarty

=)

Colin Moriarty

Colin Moriarty

The way that i see the timeline thing, the games made after ocarina are directly linked to in for the most part. Nintendo has tried to fit the older games into the timeline. Thats were it starts to not make sense for me.

Simon Payne

Thrilled to see this, OOT is goated.

Jordan

I love Breath of the Wild but... It doesn't capture the classic Zelda experience. It lacks classic dungeon exploring and puzzle solving within them. It clearly feels like a team that stripped a game to its bare bones in order to create their first open world game. I am very excited for the rare sequel that will hopefully come out soon. The core zelda team is one with fresh ideas and now that they have an established open world, I can only imagine how they will evolve it. I personally want more creepy moments like the Bottom of the Well or graveyard. Music being a gameplay mechanic is also so fun to have as well.

Carson Smith

such a great point about getting the fire arrows! a really simple puzzle and interaction, but it added an important texture to the atmosphere and game world

Jacob

Really hope you give Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild another chance someday. I fear you see the large scope of these games and think “bigger isn’t better” when it’s not about the size of these worlds, but the amount of depth that Nintendo put into both of these games (particularly with Mario Odyssey, which is far from boring when you dig deep into each world). Both are true to their series’ strengths, with the sole exception of Breath of the Wild’s lack of large main dungeons (Hyrule Castle itself in the end has this energy, hopeful that the next game corrects this). Don’t do yourself the further disservice: experience these games later down the line!!

Steve Forgione

Ocarina of Time and Final Fantasy 7 were my first big boy games and forever changed what gaming could be for me

TheJoe-senOne

Cheers boys!

Phil Walker

My body is ready!

Tim J Weckwerth

Finally 😁

I’ve been waiting for this episode for a long time now. Every time there was a vote, I would always vote for this game. My patience has been rewarded. Thank you Colin, hope your play though was fun.

Christian

Goats! 🔥🫡💪🔥🫡💪

Nicholas Hardacre

Been waiting on this 🙌
