Sacred Symbols+, Episode 203 | Final Fantasy XIV: A Brief Primer

Please welcome Haven Breithaupt to the show. You don't know Haven -- he's but an Every Day Man -- and that's why I wanted to have him on the show. He has nothing to sell you, or any content for you to watch. All he wants to do is evangelize Final Fantasy XIV (particularly its Realm Reborn revitalization and its four expansions), and I thought Sacred Symbols+ was a great venue for that. Thing is, we've been talking about this PS3, PS4, and PS5 game a ton on Sacred as of late -- it's particularly relevant since its director and producer is also working on Final Fantasy XVI, due out on PS5 in 2023 -- but we don't know very much about it. We bet a lot of you don't, either. So, let's get into the basics of Final Fantasy XIV: How it works, how you play it, what its economy and social aspects are like, its expansions and classes, and its future, too. We also answer the greatest question of all, particularly for Colin: Can it be played alone? The answer is yes! So let's chat.

Long time listener. Recent Patreon. Bought in so I could hear this episode.

Eliot Hillis

Oh no I hope that didn't come off negative, I meant I was late to comment/listening since the time I saw this it was already out a few days already, I should have been more clear my bad!

Tristen Luu

Good to know.

Colin Moriarty

There is one comment I want to add about the supscription. You actually don't need to have one. You can actually just buy time cards which give you 60 days, and you can activate anytime you want. So you can plan with your schedule accordingly knowing when you'll have more free time. When I was still a student in college I activated mine during summer breaks and winter breaks. Its only $30 which is nice.

Dragonpaul22

We're doing the best we can.

Colin Moriarty

little late but happy to see something about ff14 getting more attention on cls

Tristen Luu

We wanna try to touch on as many different kinds of games as we can.

Colin Moriarty

Glad to hear it.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

Really excited to listen to this one - it was a total surprise when it hit the feed and I'm pumped to see more FFXIV talk on the show lately. It's truly a wonderful RPG and my favorite FF by a long shot at this point. Gorgeous game, very soloable, great mechanics, and so much content.

Giovanni D'Amico

This episode excites me cause I love ff14

I agree!

Very cool. =)

Colin Moriarty

Not talking to anyone is key.

Colin Moriarty

We'll see what happens. =)

Colin Moriarty

I'll start from the beginning and see what's what when the time comes.

Colin Moriarty

Well, hopefully this illuminates it for you!

Colin Moriarty

Enjoy!

Colin Moriarty

LOL.

Normally im not a big fan of ppl without a podcasting background on SS+, but was surprised I enjoyed this conversation. I never played FF14, probably never will due to being a Dad with zero time (and the time i do have I don’t want to play an MMO), but have heard a lot on the game and was interesting to hear his perspective.

Dana Anderson

I just stared this up for the story due to Colin mentioning it over the past few podcasts. White Mage baby!

Joseph Baker

Haven did an excellent job!

O

Been thinking of jumping into FF14 for a while now. Taking this episode as a sign and gonna start the game this week ! :)

Andrew

Thank you so much for having Haven in and getting some FFXIV representation on Sacred Symbols! If anyone is curious about the game but is intimidated by the MMO nature or the playtime just know that you can play through the main story quests only and you’ll be getting a typical 50-60 hour JRPG experience for each expansion. You don’t have to do any MMO raids or even talk to anybody.

Colin, for what it’s worth, as a similarly aged fan of the classic Final Fantasy games, I think FF14 may be one of the only MMORPGs that you would enjoy. To Haven’s point, the initial learning curve of getting comfortable playing Final Fantasy as an MMORPG is quite steep. There will be a ton of information just on display and a massive Ubisoft style world map full of icons and more information. But once you get through that initial noise you’ll find a Final Fantasy game that brings back memories of FF1, FF4, FF5, and FF6. The game to me has always felt like a love letter to these games.

XIV is absolutely a genre-defining masterpiece. Having played every FF game (I through XV), XIV unequivocally has the best story, no question about it. However, the lvl 1-50 content hasn't aged well. I worry if Colin (or others) were to try the game, they'd be turned off before getting to the really good stuff (Heavensward onwards).

Aoife

Awesome. I’ve been curious about this game for years. The content I didn’t know I wanted! You guys rock, happy fourth ✌️

Joe Perez

I love this. Can’t wait to listen!!

Justin Robinson

Got thousands of hours in this game. Love it. Can't wait for the all the Last stand employees to form a raid prog group and win the next world race. I'm sure it's coming.
