KnockBack, Episode 230 | Game of Thrones (Season 8)

It's been a long trek, but we've finally made it through. Here is our eighth and final episode of KnockBack dedicated to the Game of Thrones television series, in particular its eighth season. These six episodes -- four of them essentially movie-length -- are contentious. Indeed, I don't think anyone would argue that this final run was blatantly rushed and not nearly as satisfying as to be expected. But it's not so much an insult to HBO's Game of Thrones as it is a compliment. We expected more. Yet, that doesn't mean there isn't much to talk about, praise, and enjoy in this final season, and we do just that. Buckle-up for the resolution not only of Game of Thrones, but of our nearly-20-hour discussion of it.

I'm on the second. =)

Colin Moriarty

Colin you mentioned you're reading the books. Once you finish I'd love to know your thoughts on them. Then you can join us on the Wall waiting for Winds of Winter.

Yiorgos

I'm sick of her character. =\

Colin Moriarty

Danny should be brought back by the fire god with a new purpose, restore the targaryen family and their land, breaking the cicle of madness of her family, but isolated from the rest of the kingdom, since it is the only “magical” family.

Marco Maluf

Perhaps so. It'll be a while, I'm reading them slowly.

Colin Moriarty

Too fast!

Colin Moriarty

Soon enough!

Colin Moriarty

Hm. Off the top of my head: Wild Arms, Final Fantasy IX, and Legend of Legaia. =)

Colin Moriarty

Hey Colin. Listening to you talk about the heritage of PS1 RPGs made me think how I've hardly played any of them. Of you could recommend the top 3 for someone like me to play, what would they be?

James Buck

Really enjoyed the GOT episode’s of knockback can’t wait to hear what the next Tv series you guys will be covering next.

Wayne Moss

I can’t wait till you finish reading the books that are available. Jaime is my favorite character and his relationship with Brienne is so good in the books. As someone who read all 5 between seasons 1 and 2 of the show, I had certain context while watching. What they did to Jaime’s character was the part that gutted me the most. I think once you’ve read the books you’ll be harder on the shows writing.

Stefan Catinella

My problem with season 8 as a whole was to your point that things seemed missing. Generally most of the characters end in a logical place but save for Cleganebowl it seemed like there was an entire season of content missing to get these characters to a place where they earn these moments.

Doug Abaire

That would be really cool.

Colin Moriarty

I'd like them to write-out the dragons now, as they really do tip the balance.

Colin Moriarty

Not necessarily the battle, but everything leading up to it, then the battle, then the immediate aftermath. Just stay there.

Colin Moriarty

Yeah man. Beric rules.

Colin Moriarty

Like I said: A compliment that we expected more.

Colin Moriarty

He hated his father and didn't care enough about his brother to not steal his family's sword. Didn't resonate with me at all, and in the first book, Sam talks about how much he hates his family.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you for taking the time to listen.

Colin Moriarty

Yes, I got that one confused with the PSP game, which I think was a strategy RPG.

Colin Moriarty

Ah, I hope you enjoy!

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, that was a weird one.

Colin Moriarty

You'll see. =)

Colin Moriarty

I think the Snow series will just take place north of the wall. I’m not sure we will see any of the other characters that weren’t with him at the end of the show.

Ryan Greenwood

If done properly, it could be pretty cool to see Drogon save Jon Snow at some point in the next series.

Tonys_Always_Write

Solid take. Can't say i disagree with anything you guys said. Well, accept for having the battle with the white walkers last all season. That would get extremely boring. I was actually glad it ended up being so quick

Ryan Zimm

I appreciate your love of Beric, because I feel the same way about Dolorous Edd. Side characters we can actually care about. I look forward to the two of you finally doing a deep dive into Days of Our Lives after all these years!

macdaddyx4

Gotta say I’m surprised how positive you guys were relatively speaking. Not that I’m saying anyone’s wrong for having that opinion but certainly not the way I feel. Thanks as always for the excellent discussion though - can’t wait to see what’s next in August!

Simon Pusateri

The Sam’s brother was always really kind to him. He was mostly upset about him being burnt, not his dad. Also I think the one dude the wrote in saying he was annoyed about Jamie was specifically talking about Jamie saying he didn’t care for the common people, when he literally put his honor on the line and became the king slayer by killing the Mad King solely to save the common people.

Bogey Zero

Have to agree with you guys. It's a disappointment but not necessarily awful. These GoT discussions have been awesome content by the way Colin. Thanks to you and Dagan for all the time you've put into them.

Your Boi Nicky V

The wild arms remake was actually called alter code f, on ps2. Pretty good iirc.

Dudley

Ohhh man. It’s finally here. GoT VIII was my first job in the film industry here in Ireland. Winterfell is a nine minute drive from my home, which was an absolute dream when it came to those nightshoots for Ep3. This season is bittersweet for me, I obviously admire the amount of work I seen the crew put in, even David & Dan, - but as a fan of the show first and foremost of course I was gutted at creative decisions, mostly the pace. So I’m both excited for, and dreading this episode of Knockback 😅

Conor

The Dothraki may have been extinguished in episode 3, but they all happily respawned by episode 7! Let’s not forget Grey Worm and the Unsullied merely capturing Jon after he assassinated their queen (the same day they committed war crimes on a whim for her). Gods, this season was terrible. Killed any further interest in the world of ice and fire for me. Thankful for the podcast though.

Steve Forgione

I thought the show had a considerable drop in quality once they ran out of source material. But i also enjoyed the final season far more than anyone else I know... ( outside of some annoying plot armor for certain characters, stupidity regarding avoidable dragon deaths, and the reasoning behind Bran being king). Curious where the fellas will fall on the whole Dany turning evil thing. I know a lot of people hated it and thought it came out of nowhere. I loved it and thought they did a pretty good job telegraphing it over the last couple seasons

Ryan Zimm

Hot take: I liked every season of game of thrones, and thought the ending was fine. I see why people dislike it, but I couldn’t help but enjoy seeing king’s landing get the equivalent of a fantasy medieval nuke dropped on it lol

Braeden Burge

Great series of episodes boys. Look forward to the next show. Hope its something I havnt watched so I can watch along with the discussions.

Phil Walker

I'll try and find an avenue to do so.

Colin Moriarty

<3

Colin Moriarty

So good, hahaha.

Colin Moriarty

Colin I hope you continue to give us at least some of your thoughts on the differences in the books as you read them. So many cool threads they just left out of the show. One in particular that was left out, obviously for budget reasons. Happy 4th of July.

Angel DeJesus

I loved the part where the dragon melted the throne into a wheelchair ramp for Bran, very considerate of him. So after that travesty are you guys gonna cleanse your pallet with some Avatar season two? :D

Bryce Mccloskey

I think this may finally help me heal after finishing the series for the first time a few months ago 🥲
