KnockBack, Episode 231 | Terminator 2: Judgment Day

We promised you we'd be back! A few weeks ago, we recorded an episode all about James Cameron's 1984 film The Terminator, and we figured we'd return with haste to talk about its mega-famous sequel. Launched in 1991, Judgment Day brings the co-stars of the first flick back, but turns the story on its head. This time, Arnold is a good guy, and he and Linda Hamilton act as stewards for John Connor, the all-important leader of the future resistance, after the dreaded Skynet becomes self-aware and goes haywire. Beloved to this day -- T2 is considered both one of the best sci-fi and action movies ever -- we dive into the story, setting, characters, and potential (both reached and missed) of this half-a-billion-grossing cultural phenomenon that helped further spawn and solidify an entertainment license that continues (to the chagrin of many) to this day.

Interesting I know there might be a few responses to this but Ruben saying how cops dehumanize people really shows the tone deafness of not looking at the full picture. I am not judging Ruben directly at all. I work in my local towns hospital Emergency Room and the people that we deal with on an everyday basis curse at us tell us that they hope we die and many times try to physically assault us. I remember attempting to calm a patient down one time and telling him Sir, we are here for your benefit and to help you feel better. I am not making money for each CT scan we do so it benefits me not to do your exam. I want to help you if you can just calm down and allow us too. It was like a light bulb went off in his head and he said I’m sorry and told us some of the difficult things he was going through and we ended up ending on a positive note. The reason for the story is that I have friends and family that are cops also and the stories they tell are even worse with the verbal and physical abuse they get every day. I think before we judge all cops as dehumanizing we need to realize there are bad eggs in all professions and we can’t group the good ones that make a difference together with the few that are bad. As always enjoy the Knockback and they always get me thinking. Thank you guys.

No need to apologise :D. Just wouldn't want you guys to miss out on the experience, even if its just for yourselves. Keep up the great work

Jakob Podstawek

Sorry. =\

Colin Moriarty

Im so crestfallen for you guys that your viewing was not the directors cut of the film. Missing amazing scenes where Sarah and John remove the T 800's chip and debate whether to destroy it or use his help, Miles explaining to his wife the importance of his work, Sarah seeing Kyle in her dream again before the playground, or even the T1000 learning the true name of Wolfie. I hope one day you both get the opportunity to experience the extra depth Cameron added to the film. Cheers for the episode gents.

That's an awesome memory. <3

Growing up during the summer my family would go visit my moms relatives in South Korea and I only was allowed to rent so many movies and this was one of them. So for 5 weeks in 1997 the only english movies I had available to me were It Takes Two, George of the Jungle, and Terminator 2. I watched a lot Terminator 2. Great memories.

Sena

Oh man, totally. LOL.

Colin Moriarty

When me and my cousins were younger we always recreated the thumbs up scene at the end of the movie in the pool. One of us would singing the music while one of us goes down in the pool and either do the thumbs up or thumbs down.

Josh Correa

I did appreciate that they tried to get into television.

Colin Moriarty

Terminator is such an awesome world but the movies after T2 are trash. The Sarah Connor Chronicles is the only worthy successor. And there’s a game I played recently that’s very heavily inspired by the series but saying it might be a huge spoiler so let’s just say Dustin and Matty know what game that is.

NeO JD

Such an awesome show.

Colin Moriarty

Hope you enjoy our chat.

Colin Moriarty

Ah, very interesting. I didn't know any of that.

Colin Moriarty

Not necessarily directly related to T2, but really loved Colin shouting out Salute your Shorts. Grew up watching this show on repeat in the 90’s. Zeke the plumber still gives me chills.

There are certain episodes of knockback that I absolutely have to listen to the moment they are released. This was one of those. T2 is a big part of my life. I would recommend the 4K blu ray remaster of this movie. What a great conversation guys. So happy you did this one.

So Ron and Fez were from a Florida radio show called Ron and Ron. Fez was an intern on that show and Ron Diaz’s wife got sick and he had to leave the show so Ron Bennington and Fez started doing a new show. They stayed in Florida for awhile and eventually moved to New York. Fez sadly passed away last year and Ron has been doing a show with his daughter called Bennington. Sorry this has nothing to do with terminator I just got really happy hearing y’all talk about Ron and Fez.

Ryan Mathews

It's confusing. Really should have stood alone.

Colin Moriarty

Glad it's not just us.

Colin Moriarty

I feel like they only portrayed it to rectify how it looked in T1.

Colin Moriarty

Salute Your Shorts' run was unfortunately short, but awesome.

Colin Moriarty

Fury Road is art.

Colin Moriarty

Oh man.

Colin Moriarty

When are the Whip It Out Wednesday stickers and shirts coming to the LSM store?

macdaddyx4

My favorite movie of all time. Great action. Great effects. And a great soul with philosophical depth. Can’t get much better than this. Mad Max Fury Road is only thing since that can come close.

Zack E

Great episode. Thank you for reminding me of salute your shorts. My brother and I loved that show growing up. Also, funny enough I know Robert more so from the X-Files and this movie! Didn’t even know he was in the sopranos

Kenneth Oms

I really love the idea of the future stuff being ambiguous in the first movie it would have been awesome, but man I love how the future is portrayed in T2. Cheese and all wouldn’t trade it for the world. Would further cement the Alien/Aliens contrast too. I yearn for this era of action movies, even though all these franchises are still around begging to be put out of their misery.

I felt seen by the interlude about talking to your dogs before you guys got into the show. Me and my wife have different voices/vocabulary when we're talking to our dogs. And we even have like 5 different nicknames for our dogs. If anyone who doesn't know us ever heard us they probably wouldn't have any idea who/what were even talking to lol

Josh Gamez

They really wrote themselves in a corner with the first one saying the war was already over and them sending one back was like ok maybe that's all they had time to send back but the fact that they send two different terminators into two different points in time it's like why didn't they just send armies back in time to stop John? Also please don't watch any other terminator films after this one. 3 was basically 2 all over again but stuffed full of bad jokes to make the end of the fucking world a big joke. 4 was just bad and I think my brain blocked it out for me. 5 was ok but still not missing anything. As for the newest dark fate I just refuse to watch it from all the spoilers I've seen it's an abomination
