Sacred Symbols, Episode 211 | It Can't Be For Nothing

The Last of Us: Part I has officially gone gold, interesting news considering it doesn't launch for some seven weeks. Yet, the upcoming PS5 remake's very existence has proven mighty contentious. Some claim it doesn't need to exist at all; many others insist it's a "cash grab" of the highest order. But some folks who worked on the game have come out staunchly in its defense, not only in terms of its sky-high quality, but also in terms of the shockingly-healthy circumstances under which it was made. We try to make sense of the hullabaloo surrounding Naughty Dog's latest before moving onto news surrounding freshly-purchased first party team Haven. A recent extensive interview seems to paint a picture of Haven as both a developer of games and of technologies and workflows, which fits in well with recent acquisitions like Nixxes, Bluepoint, Valkyrie, and even Bungie. After we get through all of that news (and more), we go into listener inquiries, including thoughts on PlayStation Plus' gravitational pull, the current JRPG renaissance we're living through, predictions for first and second party PS5 games in 2023, and one especially strange tale of a man who left a poop stain on a woman's couch.

Not this thread, Jerry! The inquiries thread! Wednesdays at 3. <3

Hey Gentlemen! You’re now the heads of naughty dog! What’s the next new IP? if it was me, I’d really like something artistic and colorful. The last of us is great but after pt.2 being so heavy, something upbeat would be great imo

Jerry Huerta

=)

47:20 I dunno if Dustin meant to mirror Colin's laugh there, or if it just came out. But the way he followed it up with a "W00!" felt like an attempt to brush over it, and it killed me

Cun

If my theories about them are right, along with Nixxes and a few others, then yeah, it'll make the entire pipeline cheaper, replicable, and faster.

Colin Moriarty

Wouldn't that be awesome? I feel like modern Capcom could be in that headspace.

Colin Moriarty

I wonder, with studios like Valkyrie & Haven optimizing different workflows with the aim to make the development process more efficient, would it help in lowering the production costs of AAA games? Imagine the UI designers from FromSoftware and Ubisoft having a roundtable discussion, wouldn't that be interesting. INZONE ..... yeah it's meh, could’ve had a worse name like BOY ZONE.

Sam Lee

Give me another Breathe of Fire game please! Come on Capcom!

Context Should Matter

That would be so fascinating to see and digest. I'm still surprised that they took so long to grab some of that PC money, about time. (he said selfishly)

Lou & Rei Loper

I think people are too focused on hypocrisy. Feel whatever you want. =)

Colin Moriarty

Glad you are getting use out of it.

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, I think Chris has played them.

Colin Moriarty

Just awful.

Colin Moriarty

I'm curious how it will sell, and if they will ever break out its sales separate from the originals.

Colin Moriarty

Dustin, your bloodborne scenario isn't too bad. We got LoU on ps3, then ps4 and now another one for the ps5. If you when they make a bloodborne remake for the ps5 and you're excited for a remake for the ps6....then you will be a hypocrite. Also, I know the ps4 is a remastered and not a remake...it just make it FEEL more egregiously as a cash grab.

Peter Pham

Time trials are the most interesting thing in PS Plus for me personally. Biomutant was kinda mixed, so I want to try it first before buying .

Aladin_Run

You guys gotta watch some videos of Earth Defense Force. It's a long running series and Exo Primal is primarily doing what those games do just putting some competitive multiplayer into it. There's a dinosaur game called Second Extinction that's an fps thats a fun, simple run around a map doing random objectives and fighting dinos. It's not gonna fill the dino crisis itch I'm sure but it's fun at least lol.

Joshua Fielder

I remember Jurassic The Hunted. Terrible game but I did get the platinum and it scars my PSNP milestones as my 40 plat. Colin hands down Ark is the best Dinosaur game I ever played. It's a janky survival game but you can tame all the dinos and either ride or use them to fight for you.

Pedantry corner to the rescue!

James McGivern

I'm super curious, though we'll never know...how would the people claiming the LoU remake as a cash grab feel, IF this remake canw out only to PC. Would then then be happy because they aren't tempted and they've had a great version already or would they then feel it's unfair that it's not offered to consoles too. I wonder...

Lou & Rei Loper

The sunken cost of working on the game is notable; however, it seems like it may have taken a part of the team maybe two years.

Colin Moriarty

We shall see.

Colin Moriarty

Write in!

Colin Moriarty

I was... really surprised by the swelling of negative emotions that rose from my chest at hearing you blokes talk about TLoU1:P1. Especially since I hadn't given it any thought, almost ever, since it was announced. Played the first one once, loved it, never touched it again - didn't need to. So why am I so annoyed? I think, for me, it's because it feels like a huge waste of time. If we go a whole console generation with ND only making one new game (I'm not counting factions. MP is not why ND is considered a prestige studio) - and maybe not even that - that's just unacceptable to me. And if that next game is LoU3 instead of something new? Esp since I didn't love 2? I think they have something to prove to me now. Focusing so much resources on TV, remakes and MP just isn't it for me.

I was just watching the Valorant Champions Tour this weekend and surprisingly the headset sponsor was in fact INZONE. I guess if the products are actually quality the brand might actually take off in the competitive gaming scene despite the awful name.

Erin Eden

Colin, I only do this because I'm a fan of classic horror films, but Alucard as a vampiric moniker was first used in the 1943 film "Son of Dracula", starring golden age horror legend Long Chaney Jr. Let's just hope no one holds young Dante Alucard's name up to a mirror and realizes the awful truth of who he really might be!
