KnockBack, Episode 232 | Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception (Video)

Game felt like Uncharted 3:going through the motions. Same recycled storylines, same problems, and back to status quo at the end. You can't deny the ambition and pure craftsmanship that went into making stuff like a procedurally generated ocean, even though they could've easilly faked it, or the cones of light in the plane, etc, the new lighting system looked great, too, and yet it felt totally unfinished. This is the buggiest UC I've played - couldn't finish a single online PvE mission at launch cause one of us would inevitably get stuck in a crate (so we gave up on it), an enemy grenade threw me out of bounds in the same spot multiple times in the campaign, the story had aot of plotholes, stealth sections were broken, shooting was off, and even melee combat felt too drawn out, and underdeveloped (like the fact that O button did both rolling away and grabbing enemies, or that grabbing enemies during an enemy encounter was essentially an instant death on higher difficulties). On top of all that, pacing was becoming an issue for the first time, and replayability was much worse - They seemingly ran out of time to implement the post-game unlockables in the campaign, all the barely interactive unskippable story levels, where you do nothing but walk, made the game a slog to go through again (like the young Drake level, the desert, running through the marketplace, all the forced walking segments, etc - couldn't they at least make them skippable if you already finished the game?). People seem to hate the boss in UC2, and it certainly wasn't perfect, but at least it wasn't a glorified QTE sequence like the fight with Talbot. I know their 11.1.11 date was too good to pass on (just like Skyrim's date), and Sony probably needed a big title in the holiday season, but I feel like this game needed a bit more time in the oven. The cast is still loveable, and the dialogue's still charming, gameplay overall is still pretty good (as long as you're not playing on higher difficulty settings, cause then it all falls apart), and I personally wouldn't rate it below a 7/10, but it's a noticable step down from UC2 in my opinion. Anyway, thanks for the content, it was fun to listen to your opinions on the matter.

Sorry I wrote that weird comment when I was on pain meds and really tired I wouldn't normally say that

I understand your feedback completely. There is no doubt some strangeness afoot.

Colin Moriarty

I mean, I would consider Dustin and Chris close friends. It's not quite what I'm talking about, though.

Colin Moriarty

3 reminded me of resistance 3 where it started out super strong but the ending just sucked. And they both came out within a couple months so I was so disappointed when uncharted 3 also had a weak ending. Though not nearly as terrible as r3s ending

Tbh I'm not sure how anyone can like 3 more than 2. I just don't think 3 is anywhere near as well made, especially story wise. It really fell apart in the end IMO. The sully fake out was really just weird, not well executed and felt like a cop out to me. Worst of all is Marlow and Talbot and what they were after. A hallucinogen? Seriously? That's their way to achieve world domination? Lmfao also all of Talbott magical powers that were never explained. And even the cruise ship, one of the best set pieces ever and I love it, was essentially padding. It didn't forward the story AT ALL. It was high effort padding and super fun so I do still love it but there's nothing I can remember in 2 that was wasted. It was all very well structured and executed, and the villain IMO was significantly more interesting and even likable lol I do love cutter tho. I badly want him to return to the series

Hugo Stiglitz

I understand why you don't consider it an option (Given your past) but the people you work with could be your friends. I don't know any of you personally so maybe you know something I don't but what I know of you it would make sense for you keep distance between you and the people you work with. I could be reading the situation totally wrong so take what I am saying with a gran of salt but I recommend doing that for most advice

In time!

Colin Moriarty

Definitely need Dagan’s thoughts on Uncharted 4 and The Last of Us pt 2 at some point.

Dylan Gibson

I think 4 (redux) into Lost Legacy is in my future. Truth be told, there's not very much to distract me right now!

Colin Moriarty

Thank you. It's always nice to get to sound-off to Dagan.

Colin Moriarty

I thought Dagan would like 3 over 2 but alas. Sad I gotta wait for the 4 episode but at least you’re actually thinking about playing Lost Legacy now. This really makes me wanna go back and rerank the series in total. And I thought the “there’s a hidden treasure down there” was heartwarming. Sly Dagan. 😄 As others have mentioned Gears would be a great one. ❤️

Loved the intro conversation about your respective states of mind. Thank you for being so open. I'm going through a similar phase... the analogy I use to explain it to people is it's like when you and your spouse or partner are trying to decide where to go to dinner on a Friday night and absolutely nothing sounds good.

Doug, just Doug

A lot of this comports with what I was told at the time by folks. ND and Sony took great umbrage with IGN's reporting that Amy was "forced out," but they don't know the sources. =)

Colin Moriarty

Wolfenstein rules.

Colin Moriarty

Good times indeed.

Colin Moriarty

Maybe SS+.

There is a YouTube interview with Richard McGonagle (Victor Sullivan) where he actually goes into some detail about Amy Henig's departure. He says she was forced out of the company against her will. He, Nolan North, and the rest of the cast got together and discussed walking away from Uncharted 4 altogether, but they stayed because Amy didn't want them to abandon the game, and they wanted to stick together and not let Uncharted die like that (as well as the whole... contractual obligation thing.) Here's the link. Time stamp is 36:46 https://youtu.be/XR0njVrvR9o If you listen to/read Bruce Straley talk about his own departure from Naughty Dog, he's said that the development of U4 felt more akin to an obligation to the team/company than something he wanted to do. He's also stated that it was *before he and Neil began work on U4 that he spoke with Evan/Christophe and said that he would need some time off if he was to take the position. It doesn't appear Bruce necessarily left ND on bad terms personally, but his his story and Richard's kind of go together like glue.

Amazing episode! D mentioned the Nazis in Uncharted 1 and I’m recently playing through Wolfenstein for the first time. Made me want to get a Knockback on Wolfenstein one day. Such an amazing alternate history game too.

Jeff Caseres

This was my favorite entry until Lost Legacy happened. Good times.

Daniel Rivas

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all the Knockback episodes of the first 3 Uncharted games. I know in the show you said you probably wouldn’t do Uncharted 4 on Knockback because it’s too new…But I feel like we need the Brothers Moriarty opinions on each mainline game.
