Sacred Symbols+, Episode 207 | Gamergrate

For some people, politics and video games go together like peanut butter and poop. But -- irrespective of the naysaying -- the two are natural bedfellows, as politics is with any entertainment medium or artform. To explore the positive and negative intersections of these two seemingly-disparate but deeply-interconnected worlds, I invited podcaster, social commentator, and Gamer (with a capital G) Noam Blum (also known as neontaster) to +. Together, we delve into the culture, politics, and social ramifications of gaming, touch on the origins of Gamergate (and Elevatorgate!), discuss Anita Sarkeesian, Jonathan McIntosh, Zoe Quinn, and others, consider the inevitability of a 'gaming president,' dissect the cliquishness of the very media overseeing its own destruction, the problems of translations and localizations, and a lot more. No politics in gaming? Not 'round these parts.

"Clickish-ness" is a polite way of saying people were harassed I suppose

joefray_

I think we will next week.

Colin Moriarty

What a Fantastic episode, will you guys make this episode available for the public? I think everyone needs to hear this conversation. Noam nailed everything I felt about the gaming sphere since the beginning of the Trump era. Great episode guys!

Dragonpaul22

Much appreciated. We exist!

Colin Moriarty

Thanks!

Thank you!

Man what a freaking awesome episode. I'm so happy I'm part of this community. Every time I'm struggling with the current world I listen to these podcast and remember that there are still sane, rational people out there ๐Ÿ˜‚

James Buck

Finally got to this. A+ episode.

Andrew Christensen

One of my favorite episodes. Keep kicking ass

DeathByClams

Me too!

Colin Moriarty

Awesome getting to hear Neontaster on here. Looking forward to his inevitable return!

MrMilk

No doubt there's a lack of diverse opinions!

Colin Moriarty

Very good episode! And a fair and balanced analysis of Gamergate and it's consequences. Would like to have heard Noah give some examples of when he thinks "politics in games" are preachy or hamfisted. Because although I see political messaging in a lot of games, I hardly ever feel talked down to. I agree with the lack of diverse opinions in the games industry as a whole though.

Dennis

It's great. Its focus is on 4Chan, but it really covers both sides of the political spectrum and mulls on our endless attempts to escape from consumer culture, one generation after the next. How this led us into hyper specific (and sometimes very dark & dreary) internet hangouts, to the 2016 election, and what it's doing to us now. Did it on audiobook and bought a copy to give away.

MJ SKA BOI

Thank you.

Colin Moriarty

I've not heard of that book, I'll need to look into it.

He'll be back, should he want to return!

never heard of Gamergate (was busy finding myself lol) and you guys go beyond that. Banger episode!

gnawtyFOX

As a critic of gamergate, the issue people have with it is not about the gaming community or gamers. It is about those Trolls on 4Chan and people like Milo and white supremacist Richard Spencer who gained infamy through 4Chan's hard rightward swing in the lead-up to 2016 and 4Chan's capitalization of Gamergate. There's a fantastic book about 4Chan's evolution and the extremism that leaks out of the nihilism and loneliness of anonymous shitposters, titled "It Came From Something Awful" written by Dale Beran. Can't recommend the book enough. As a period in time, Gamergate is absolutely responsible for a lot of bad shit that comes out of 4Chan (such as mass shootings committed "for the lulz") because Gamergate was the moment that lonely, angry, anonymous meme makers realized they could touch the outside world through their screens.

MJ SKA BOI

One of my top 10 episodes, can you have him on all the time?

Douglas Coffin

This was a really good episode. As someone who after the gamergate stuff followed a few of its advocates and heard their take on it, I was surprised to see it so well explained and represented.

Leeor Vardi

Totally agree on Daily Wire. I like some of the personalities , but when I tune in to the Ben Shapiro show for example, I feel like I get high blood pressure from the non stop red meat. Really enjoy some of the less political stuff they do, like the recent Town Hall. Teetering on the edge of subscribing just for Jordan Peterson. Also, keep this guy in the Rolodex for next time the gaming industry puts Israel in their crosshairs.

Kickstand

Great episode!

Jason K

Solid episode.

Shane Pryor

Amazing episode. Thoroughly enjoyed it

Jeff in NOLA

Speaking of Daily Wire, a really cool guest would be Andrew Klavan. He's an older guy in the political sphere but also surprisingly a gamer. He has both a Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us Part 2 review on his channel. A bit more of a political take on both games but still cool nonetheless. Plus the story of how he was ousted by Hollywood for his political views and found success elsewhere is also interesting.

Dave Ramos

Fantastic listen.

Greg Mocha

Thank you for talking about localization and translation being a bigger problem in gaming and anime. Especially towards Japanese content and trying to โ€œfixโ€ it. This needs more attention and push back

PairOfShuse

I canโ€™t wait to give this a listen. Two of my passions - politics and gaming! Thank you, Colin.

Anthony A.

Good stuff Colin and also congrats on the engagement (saw it on Twitter)

O

Ooo I'm hyped. I really like this guy
