Sacred Symbols+, Episode 208 | Gushing About Vita (and More!) With Gio Corsi

Please welcome my (Colin's) good friend Gio Corsi to the show. Most of you know Mr. Corsi full-well -- he spent more than six years as an executive at PlayStation, particularly during the latter PS3/Vita era and into and through most of the PS4 generation -- and you saw him on-stage at events, in videos, giving interviews, and more. In 2019, Gio left Sony to go to second-party partner Illfonic, but I wanted to bring him on the show not to talk about the future, but instead the past. We focus on Vita, which he helped shepherd at Sony from a software perspective, and we long for the days of Sony's handhelds. We also talk about other things: The nature of first, second, and third party games, what it's like being an industry personality, the fight over storefront quality-control, and more. And yes: I ask him about my recent obsession, game subscriptions. He doesn't agree with me. Please enjoy.

Great interview! Gio awesome. Never forget when he was on stage with his little Vita. Great times!

Elliott Morgan

Would have liked to have known about Rockstar(the lack of on Vita). San Andreas & VC came to android during Vitas era. Biggest gaming ip not to have come to the platform. What happened? Especially with take two on board with other IPs.

Greg Dawson

I still play my Vita to this day. Nothing like it.

Wade Says

Indeed.

Colin Moriarty

My man Geo. Love that guy. A true Vita champion.

Pace

Back touch was just a bad idea, full stop. I don't think just having R1 and L1 (and maybe clickable sticks) would have done the trick.

Colin Moriarty

I'll press him again when he returns. =)

Colin Moriarty

Indeed.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

Imo the problem on the Vita is the lack of the triggers, I know the memory card is expensive, but I would pay for it, sell a kidney, I dont know, but the missing triggers, forcing us to use the touch buttons was a major issue for me.

It’s a shame Gio didn’t spill the beans on any cool potential game acquisitions in the past. I understand he’s gotta maintain his corporate image by answering very plainly. However, I don’t see the harm in telling a couple stories about deals that avoid smearing both parties.

Alec Davis

Wow, this is honestly inspiring. This dude is a true true fan at the end of the day. I think it's beautiful that he can be an alumni from PlayStation and still look back at it so fondly.

Kyle Fox

Aqesome convo with Gio. I was at the PSX where he pulled out the vita. What a legend!

lazer_josh

It's an option.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you.

Colin Moriarty

=)

Colin Moriarty

Yes, though you can't get Trophies there. =\

Colin Moriarty

Just bought Wild Arms on Vita. I assume Colin approves.

GOAT interviews a GOAT. Let’s goooooo

I'm pretty sure Sony thinks they solved the problem with 'selections' they have in store. These are technically hand picked games and themes are switched often (like retro selection, free to play selection, arcade selection etc.). Don't think it is an actual solution to the problem but I'm with Gio on giving that power to some council. Asking for trouble. I do like your idea about meta data added to allow filtering. Even internal to PSStore meta data from users would be great.

tejotl

On improving the PSN store quality, why not just partner with Metacritic and have a default filter of sorting by aggregate review scores. That would ensure good indie games get noticed. Just wrote this before hearing you say about a council! Yeah we’re on same wavelength but Metacritic is a big name you can trust.

Matt Wiles

Really got me nostalgic when you listed all the Playstation Celebs (dare I say... All Stars? 🤣). Hope all good with private matters on Gio's side. SS+ killing it as usual

tejotl

Thanks! I'm sure we'll have him back.

Colin Moriarty

Not really what I'm talking about, no.

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, I don't blame him. He's in a position where he has to be diplomatic.

Colin Moriarty

Indeed.

Colin Moriarty

Thanks for your support.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you. =)

Colin Moriarty

I didn't say that.

Colin Moriarty

<3

Colin Moriarty

Yes!

Colin Moriarty

Thanks. =)

Great interview as always Colin! I am sure Gio is a busy man, but getting him involved in different topics in the future would be great. I think it would be cool/enthralling to get Gio, Cog, and yourself together to discuss some of your favorite indie games/devs, and titles you are looking forward to.

Bambi_Cobblestone

A thought I had since they were kinda back to back questions. Colin mentioned like a council to monitor the quality of games or whatever. Then that rolled into subscription services. Is that not an example of said council of games? Like there’s some average games on gamepass and PS++, but I would argue there isn’t much in the way of trash on those services.

Owen

It was good to hear you guys talks as I heard you mention Gio on the show loads. You tried to get some decent insights with good questions but I thought Gio was very guarded during the show when talking anything about games. He didn't really offer much insight, which I suppose is understandable given he's still in the games industry and dealing with Playstation. It was still great to hear two Playstation veterans chat though.

DMC

It's funny I just whipped out my Vita been meaning to play metal gear solid 2 and then there's an episode about Vita. How wonderful the universe is.

Asique Alam

Always good to hear from my end credits name neighbor. What a GOAT

Joey Gondhalekar

He did have a lot of PR answers, but praise to vita. It was cool having one of the PlayStation celebrities on. But clearly he is unwilling to even hint that he’d be ok with having an opinion that could possibly close a door anywhere. Praise patreon too, because it really is important to have voices that can speak their mind, thanks Colin.

Chris

Greg and yourself talk 👀 that’s awesome 👏🏽

Edwin Garcia

Another games legend that started in the QA trenches. Love to see it 🙌

KendrickLuck

Vita means life! ❤️

Erin Eden

Oh hell yeah. The GOAT himself. Can't wait to listen.

Seth Zentner

=)

Colin Moriarty

Well, of course.

Colin Moriarty

Viva la Vita, indeed. =)

Colin Moriarty

Awesome!!

NuclearProstate

I see the word “Vita” and have to download!

Sandeep Rai

Very excited to hear this. I'll always remember those legendary moments Gio announced some new games at PSX, then pulled his PS Vita out and said "and on Vita". Viva La Vita!
