KnockBack, Episode 233 | No Country For Old Men

In 2005, acclaimed American author Cormac McCarthy released one his most famous novels, a brisk read called No Country For Old Men. Set in 1980 in Texas' sprawling border region, No Country For Old Men is all about chance and consequence set amongst the backdrop of a brewing drug war that, in modern times, we know all too well. Our audience voted for us to cover this topic -- one about money, violence, love, and happenstance -- and we did so from two angles: We watched the movies, as you requested, but we also read the book, which is quite different in a number of ways. We're absolutely thrilled to talk about the Coen Brothers' award-winning film and the novel it was based upon alike. Just remember to call the coin.

True.

The excessive violence comes from one specific scene for me and it is when Anton shoots that guy in the hotel with his shot gun and it blows his arm off. Sick.

Context Should Matter

=)

Colin Moriarty

Thank you for reading my question on the show guys. It made my day 😁

Wade Says

Yeah, that's funny stuff. I like details like that.

Colin Moriarty

I like the idea too, but it's unfortunately not really practical.

Colin Moriarty

Creepy. =)

Colin Moriarty

Thanks for listening.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

I'd read first.

Probably one of my favorite facts about this movie that I forgot to write in about is that production on the movie had to be paused due to the smoke from the oil fire in "There will be Blood" that was being filmed at the same time just a few miles away!

Omg Colin...Micah...yall gotta do breakfast at the wedding what a dope ass idea.

I normally keep a crew cut, by Oct 2020, my hair was long enough that I went to work dressed as Anton Chigurh for the office Halloween contest. Easiest outfit ever. Can't wait to check this out.

Boots!

I remember seeing this movie in bits and pieces. I don't think I ever watched it in one full sitting. I know I liked it a lot and thought the story was awesome. This movie has so many moments and scenes that can suck you in. It is almost like Goodfellas in the way that once it is on TV you just leave it on. I have to read the book. I read Blood Meridian earlier this year, another C-Mac classic, really hope they make a movie for that. Apologies for the assault rifle-firing of sentences here. Good episode.

Mitchell Lundsberg

This was a great breakdown of an excellent film. I’m glad you mentioned the influence of this film on The Last of Us as Neil and Bruce have said in interviews that, in addition to Llewelyn being an influence for Joel, this film’s ability to build tension with minimal dialogue and music was something they wanted to replicate in a game (which I thought Naughty Dog did wonderfully). Great job with this episode!

Jim Capron

Should I read the book before I listen to this or can I just watch the movie?

Braxton Wilkerson

Enjoy. =)

Thanks!

How did I not know this was a book?! I’ve even read a few of Mcarthys books. Buying now

I always thought the title “No Country for Old Men” was in reference to the Sheriff, Ed Tom Bell. Am I mistaken? I envy high schoolers of this era. This would of been a great book/movie to discuss in a literature class. Great show Gents!

Andrew Morgan

Sick! Glad you chose to read it, too. I think the book is awesome.

Colin Moriarty

I read the entire book over the weekend for the first time ready for this episode. Reading The Road now. Can't wait to dig into this ep tonight!!
