KnockBack, Episode 62: The Pool
Added 2019-04-18 16:01:00 +0000 UTCFor many of us, being a child during the summer largely revolved around one thing: The swimming pool. Whether you had an above-ground pool or an in-ground pool, or you had to rely on your friends' pools for your aquatic adventures, or even if you spent the dog days of summer at the municipal pool or at the local Y, there's a decent chance you've got some swimming-related memories tucked away in your head. That's what today's episode of KnockBack is all about: All the games, the toys, the friends, and the stories that took place in, around, and under that (usually) blue, (sometimes) pee-infested water. Oh, and of course the dives, flips, and other jumps that probably could have killed all of us at one point or another. Cannonball!

There was a motor and pump system that would shoot the water in short bursts so the water came out like bullets. I loved those damn things.

Rule of thumb was only ever used by one judge which tried to invoke the idea, and was mocked called "judge thumb". It is actually a term used for measuring. You use the "rule of thumb" when cutting wood and other building materials. The idea being a master worker wouldn't need a measuring tool but could eye it using their thumb. On horse flies, they are definitely in New England. I think they are directly tied to large livestock. We had horses in Massachusetts and those little buggers bit the hell out of us in the summer. I literally said “fuck yeah!” out loud 😂 I started playing the sport back in 7th grade all the way through high school and was even the President of the water polo club at my college for a semester. I haven’t played for almost a couple of years, but man, that sport got me in the best shape of my life and I ate whatever I wanted without losing or gaining any weight because I’d burn so many calories. I remember having to tread water and hold metal chairs out of the water while doing it and swimming at least 2500 yards a day, scrimmaging for hours on end. That sport is really as hard as you say it is, but it’s freaking legit. P.S. SoCal is like water polo central, you should seriously consider trying it sometime. You would especially be good at goalie, and that position doesn’t require you to swim as much! Lol.

2019-04-19 04:19:59 +0000 UTCColin, Regarding your beliefs about my generation (I'm 22) being overprotected and over-supervised, I recommend you read Dr. Jonathan Haidt and Greg Lukianoff's book "The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure." I haven't read it myself, but I've heard Dr. Haidt debate and discuss the book in various YouTube videos, and apparently it explores the things you talk about with actual research and goes into why this is negatively impacting a generation (increased suicides, etc.). Anyway, thought you might be curious.

2019-04-19 02:19:24 +0000 UTCGreat episode! When you guys were talking about what tricks you were able to pull off, it reminded me of a high school story. After water polo in gym class, every once in a while the coach would let us fuck around with the diving boards and the high dive. I went up to the high dive thinking “I bet I could do a double front flip off of that thing.” I was always doing crazy flips and whatnot on trampolines, mimicking Jeff Hardy and my other favorite pro wrestler's moves. I went up and nailed not only double flip, but I ended up over-rotating and going in head first. The coach asked me if I had experience in diving and even asked me to come to the tryouts for the diving team. This was hilarious because 1) I meant to land on my feet. The head first dive was accidental. And 2) I was REALLY not in ‘diving team’ shape. I would’ve been the one fucker with a gut and tattoos at those meetings. Long story short I did not follow through with pursuing the team, and the coach may or may not still be wondering what sort of potential I had. (Spoiler: I didn’t have any)
