Sacred Symbols, Episode 48: Stealing Thunder

E3 2019 is right around the corner, and Sony ain't gonna be there. But that doesn't mean the company is being quiet. Quite the opposite! Likely in anticipation of big Xbox-related moves and announcements at the annual convention, PlayStation has loosened its spigot even more than it already had in recent weeks, talking PlayStation 5 (or whatever the hell it's going to be called), not to mention PlayStation 4, which it anticipates will be the brand's primary driver until 2022. We discuss. Plus: Mortal Kombat 11 and Days Gone sell big, the new Call of Duty is causing title confusion, Twisted Metal is coming to a TV near you, and The World Health Organization thinks gaming will kill us all. To wrap things up, we take some listener questions, including on Supermassive's upcoming horror game anthology, Sony's possible exclusive return to the FPS genre, and how Oculus Quest may just help PSVR. Oh, and did you know Chris is creamy? More details within!

Thank you for your insight, doctor. =)

Hi Colin, I just wanted to give a little bit of my opinion on gaming disorder as a therapist. You and Chris are exactly right, the criteria sounds like addiction because that’s basically the general umbrella that it is under. You had a problem with functional impairment in the social/family area, so I wanted to give a little context there. Pretty much every single disorder has that in diagnostic criteria. What that essentially means is if the problem in question is causing impairment in the life of the individual, then it is actually a disorder. If it causes no impairment whatsoever, then it is not a diagnosable issue. This is also in the context of the person, not a general idea of what people should be. So, if you normally aren’t social with friends or family and you play a lot of video games, that doesn’t mean you meet criteria. It only meets criteria if the video games are causing the impairment (like not going to work consistently to play, or constantly avoiding people to play). I hope this makes sense and helps to clarify! I’d be happy to answer any questions you or anyone else has.

Zach Wilson

Yes.

Colin Moriarty

How dare you

NeO JD

Yeah a 97 is ridiculous

GameSimp

:D

hugplx

Possibly, though it looks like a November release.

Colin Moriarty

I think we'll probably just do it. Fuck it.

Colin Moriarty

Horrifying.

Colin Moriarty

I'm not sleeping on it, I'm ignoring it!

Colin Moriarty

It's a great game. I had a lot of fun playing it. But c'mon man. A 97?!

Colin Moriarty

I still think 2020 is a safe bet.

Colin Moriarty

Sir, how dare you.

Colin Moriarty

...

Colin Moriarty

No, it was actually from this recording. LOL.

Colin Moriarty

Another great episode Chris!!!

There’s No I in LLC

I assume that outro clip is from the YouTube video and now I have to watch it.

Jason Bolla

Wouldn't they inherently want to split the playerbase? It's a market.

Colin Moriarty

I'm hearing stuff, but who knows if it's true.

Colin Moriarty

I'm really hoping they are working on a new Killzone.

Taubel

I agree that odyssey gets overhyped by some people, but I think it’s actually in the top three best 3D Mario games. I think sunshine is king followed by odyssey, then 64, then 3D world. If any of the 3D Mario games are overrated it’d be the galaxy games, in my opinion . Still love them, but they’re simply stiffer to play and not as perfectly designed as the other games. I always feel like the galaxies are just random junk floating around in space with no cohesion. The music and vibe are fantastic, though. They’re just not as fun from a gameplay perspective, because the movement is so limited compared to sunshine and odyssey specifically. They also do not have the impeccable design of 3D world’s levels, despite being just as linear.

GameSimp

Just saw the November release date for Death Stranding. Wow! I would have thought 2020-2021.

Daniel Boyer

Knack is disgusting, Colin

GameSimp

I’m not a fan of the title being Modern Warfare again considering that MW was recently remastered and still holds up as 1 of the best games ever. I feel like it’s a cash grab play. I’d rather they simply title it Call of Duty. Colin, enough of the Persona blasphemy already. Stop sleeping on 5.

NeO JD

I have the R2 plat and can confirm it took forever.

Caleb Peacock

I totally get feeling like predictions aren't special anymore, and your desire not to do them and be just like everyone else etc (even if they're just copying you). I just wanted to point out you're the only gaming podcast I listen to anymore, and listening to you try and guess what's coming is genuinely enjoyable.

hugplx

So the Death's Stranding preorder leak on the playstation store reminded me what a friend of mine told me months back that I had dismissed. He said someone in his family works for Gamestop and that they had told him about a listing they found on the store computer. The listing apparently showed a release date for the game referring to is as Deathcember the 1st. Now with this recent leak I wonder if what he told me was correct after all. I guess we will find out soon.

Peter champion

From what I've read/heard, I think the battle royale games do what they can to not split the player base. Even when pubg had a huge player base on PC, when they added the new map, the wait times went up slightly to find matches. It made sense to me, but could be totally wrong.

bk200jj

Hmmm. That's interesting food for thought, indeed.

Colin Moriarty

<3 Thank you for your service, nonetheless. =D

Colin Moriarty

I hate you.

Colin Moriarty

FWIW, I didn't take it as disrespectful at all. You're allowed to disagree with me, or even think I'm wrong. =D

Colin Moriarty

A quick thought on the Apex report in terms of money made. I play the game off and on and they way it makes money is kinda bizarre. It's cosmetic store items are obscenely expensive ($18 for one skin in some cases) and the only other way to spend money on the game is a season pass, which occurs once every few months. That means money spending waxes and wanes. I think there is still a player drop-off, but i think focusing on money-made leaves out a lot of the story.

Drew Sleezer

Colin as a U.S. Military Veteran I have to say thank you for pointing out the fact that you DO NOT wish people a happy Memorial Day. There is nothing happy about it. That's saved for Veterans Day. Great episode.

Brett Carlson

Another great episode, Chris. Keep up the great work!

Gabriel Garcia

I would like to apologize, I didn't mean to offend Colin's style of playing games. I just don't understand how it works. It wasn't my intention to say that one way of playing games is better than another or that my way of playing games is the right way. I was just confused about how Colin experiences the game as he plays it. Again, no disrespect. Looking forward to the next podcast.

There it is!

Colin Moriarty

The game you’re thinking about is Monster Knight. I know this because I looked it up after you mentioned it and found your IGN article lol

Kenneth Oms

Fair enough. I think we'll accede.

Colin Moriarty

Essence?

Colin Moriarty

A 97?!

Colin Moriarty

Then you'd really enjoy the Dennis Prager spoof videos we were watching, because they rule.

Colin Moriarty

All good, dude! Your financial health comes first, no doubt. Enjoy the content on free feeds. Hope to see you back!

Colin Moriarty

Fascinating.

Colin Moriarty

It's funny: My best friend Ramon is also 100% Puerto Rican and 100% doesn't speak Spanish. They're American!

Colin Moriarty

Didn't we say lacrosse is hockey on foot?

Colin Moriarty

That'd be nice. Bend almost made an Infamous game for Vita. =D

Colin Moriarty

I think I'd rather die.

Colin Moriarty

Fuck the USSR. LOL.

Colin Moriarty

Let the man live.

Colin Moriarty

I would like for you guys to do E3 predictions only because I listen to you guys alone for gaming opinions

Andrew

Another dynamite episode. Quick question, right before the ending when talking about getting interesting reviews about the podcast. Did you say "they really understand the "ass"ence of Sacred Symbols"? If you did, I like it. If not, my apologies, carry on sir.

Barrett Boswell

Good episode, except the part on Mario. Good thing you are a PS podcast or I would have to cancel :). I loved both Zelda and Mario in recent memory more than any other game. Nintendo at their best just nails the fun controls so well to make the game just a joy to play, and I've often considered myself a more story-driven player than anything else. I would love another infamous too, I absolutely loved that series (but the first has remained my favorite, even with its warts).

CTE

Dennis Prager is like boomer conservative inc videos. Boo

Andrew

Hey Colin, a bit of topic but wanted to let you know I had to cancel my pledge this month, been with you since Beyond days and Patreon day 1, my father passed away last week and due to things like missing work, buying suit etc. I'm a bit strapped for cash, I'm not on social media or would've hit you up there, just wanted to explain personally, I'll be back as soon as I can, love and respect

David Kramme

Colin on the subject of Crossplay and a new Sony, I think its worth noting that the 3 crossplay games they currently have, Fortnite Rocket League and Dauntless are all under the Epic Games umbrella.

As a latino I am A B S O L U T E L Y E N R A G E D that Chris reads the words "Los Demonios" and says "it sounds like Spanish" it IS regular spanish, folks, it just means The Demons, cmon Chrissy boy, I love you but you're puerto rican, man! What would that Hamilton guy say? Just kidding man, love you both, im gonna change my name to its english iteration just to avoid more confusions if you ever read one of my quesitons :)

Cricket is "hockey on foot." Isn't that just street hockey? Oh, and I'm pretty sure some of my ancestors lived in the Soviet Bloc, so I guess I shouldn't have observed Memorial Day.

David Graham

Please Sony, new Infamous game on PS5. 🤞🏽🤞🏽

Brandon Soto

EyePet 3 and Invizimals 2 for PS5 Launch

Matt Borjes

Never apologize to Soviets Colin #PolandRemembers 😈

tejotl

Wait, Chris... so not only you've never seen a CIRCUS TENT, now you are one of those psychos who's never seen Game of Thrones?... who hurt you? (Although to be honest, with that ending in mind, you kinda dodged a very poorly written bullet)
