Sacred Symbols, Episode 53: The Plot Thickens
Added 2019-07-02 16:01:00 +0000 UTC
Until recently, we've been left to wildly speculate about PlayStation 5. And boy, have we speculated! But since spring, Sony has been more than willing to talk about its next-gen machine, though it still declines to name it publicly. In a wide-ranging Wall Street Journal article, sources both at Sony and familiar with their internal happenings describe a gaming machine with great capabilities, one being aimed at a specific, hardcore market in mind. But does Sony's approach to hardware, games, and player satisfaction in turn satisfy us? We opine. Then: July's PS+ games are lackluster (to say the least), Remedy has reacquired the rights to Alan Wake, a third Ni No Kuni game is incoming, Bernie Sanders gets crazy with the kids on Twitch, and much more. And, to close, listener questions about GI Joe video games, Colin's obsession with in-game clocks, the plague of terrible PSVR games, and one Sacred Symbols fan's quest for everlasting love.

Note that we didn't say other parts of Sony were struggling, mind you. Just flat. Sony is becoming reliant on PlayStation.

Just on Sony struggling outside of Playstation, I’ve been told by a lot of people that the quality of their TVs has jumped ahead of Samsung and LG in recent years - hence why I bought one of their 4K TVs which I love. No doubt they are very dependent on PS5s success now. Although I’d imagine they won’t be too concerned if the numbers transitioning to PS5 are initially low if everyone keeps playing on the PS4...

Colin how do you feel about the July PS Plus switch-a-roo? A hilarious kind of gaffe by Sony that they really accidently fall into a home run. Detroit Become Human is a great game that was not played by enough people. Getting that for free less then a year after release is fantastic. If Sony was smart they would have an internal discussion about releasing their exclusive content free on PS Plus maybe 10 months after it's original launch date. It would keep new players streaming in. Maybe they never played a David Cage game and now you can try out one of the best games on the market for free. Great move.

That's true, and a good point, but the general idea of tariffs is to create trade balance. So I think we're both right.

It would be such a fun job, actually. And really easy.
And Sony would make more money than they do now and have a far better reputation for quality than they already do.
But I digress!

Just a lil FYI for ya Col: Disney bought FOX and so now it owns about half of Hulu. While Disney+ is coming, there's talk of Disney moving all of its Miramax, Touchstone, and now FOX rated R movies and rated M tv shows to Hulu, and not being on Disney+.

Hey Colin, loved the episode. Some thoughts on your guys tariff discussion.
While some tariffs are protectionist, not all are. The tariffs on video game consoles and component I wouldn’t consider to be protectionist. These are part of a larger strategy to hurt Chinas economy and attempt to force concessions from them. The goal of these tariffs is not to bring console manufacturing to the US, but to encourage the manufacturing in any other country besides China.

Hey Colin, when you were talking about the gambling issue with loot boxes in this week’s ep, the correct word was actually ‘packing a top player’ when the question mentioned fifa, as that’s the term for getting a good player when purchasing packs in which you receive players and other consumables/items

Because they aren't played out yet.
If you invest in only these types of games, which take 4-5 years to make, you may find them to be played out when it's too late.
Sony should diversify. They don't need Remedy.

I completely agree, which is why I think they should start giving away a PSVR game a month, at the very least.
PS+ used to be far more valuable than it is now.

Remedy would be a great addition for Sony. You guys are high lol. Sony has no one who makes games like them. Just because a game is 3rd person does not mean anything. That is a trivial lense to look through. Uncharted and God of War are literally nothing like each other beside camera angle. Last of Us is stealth and survival horror. What does the camera perspective have to do with anything? How many 3rd person games exist in history? 10,000? No one has cared yet. Almost every critically acclaimed game in history is a 3rd person game. Remedy makes weird artsy third person games. Max Payne is nothing like Uncharted and neither is Alan Wake. You literally fight using a flashlight against black goo monsters in Alan Wake. Uncharted is pulp action. Remedy makes thrillers. Marvel literally made the same movies for 10 years straight and turned it into the most prolific film franchise in the history of mankind. If third person games are played out then why do they keep selling 10 million copies plus?

On the topic of free games for PS+.
In general, I agree with the notion that we are a little spoiled with the free games, because I think you easily get your money's worth over the span of a year.
With that being said, I do have an issue with the fact that Sony stopped giving out PS3/Vita titles as a part of PS+, and hasn't really found a suitable replacement during their monthly giveaways (as a side note, the fact that Sony stopped giving out PS3/Vita titles, I think is a strong indication that PS5 will not be able to play these games digitally, which is a real bummer).
I mean Sony could have doubled the PS4 games given out every month, to match Xbox's four games (2 Xbox One, and 2 XB360 titles that are always automatically backcompat if they weren't so already) or they could've have upped the quality of the two titles that they offer.
So from the Sony gamer perspective, I do agree that the value, while still good, has diminished quite a bit compared to what we used to get.
Either way, you're getting free games as part of a larger service, so just be sure to redeem your games every month (you are still paying for them technically) becuase you never know now if you one day, you'll want to go back and check out one of those games in the future. This happened to me with "Race to the Sun. I had never heard of it and knew nothing about it, but I redeemed it either way. I played it at a friend's place years later and loved it, so when I went to go buy it, I already owned it on PS4 becuase of PS+. You just never know!

You've said many times how NnK is s special game but I've not heard you go too deep on that because of spoilery issues.
I agree it was a special game, up until a certain point. It was a magical, poignant tale about love and loss, and then there's a natural end point... Then out of nowhere a Zombie apocalypse happens and it's about saving the world.
The final act of the game seriously soured me on NnK. I don't think it's bad, but that final act made the game go from 'this is truly special' to 'this is pretty good I guess.'
I feel like jrpg devs in general are scared of not having massive scope final acts. Even my fav FF (9) wasn't immune from almost the exact same thing.

Colin you probably dont remember but I called this months ago in the comments about Playstation doubling down on what it does best and that's hardcore games for the hardcore player base. This is a fantastic approach. Listen this doesnt mean they wont have services. They have already said openly that PS Now is getting a huge push for PS5. But Sony doesn't not need to fool around. They won this generation off the back of HIGH QUALITY GAMES. They had not services this whole generation as a focus. They focused of Hall of Fame level games. That's what Sacred Symbols fans want, that's what Playstation gamers want. You sit down to watch a Chris Nolan movie you know what you are getting. You are getting the highest quality imaginable. There is nothing wrong with Xbox being the service company with all the great services, Nintedo being the handheld company for niche and casual gamers and Sony being the hardcore platform. This actually opens the door for Xbox games to be on Playstation. Playstation has the greatest library of critical acclaimed games of all time. Look from PS1 until PS4 no one has consistently created the cream of the crop in games like Playstation. Why waver from that. At the end of the day people buy console TO PLAY GAMES, and if you have the best games and the most powerful (if not equal) machine then players are going to flock like pigeons to bread.

Old farm boy here. If you sell or trade horses the first thing you do is check the teeth to determine the horse's age.
So the old adage is cautioning about being picky with something that is free.
I would guess this practice of aging horses is also the origin of "long in the tooth".

Disagree with your take on Ni No Kuni 2 guys. Yes - total mechanical change but its a bigger, more JRPG like experience which is what they were going for I think. Plus, I thought there were definitely some emotional elements in the game, although not as heavy as the first.

I would love a GI Joe game and would suggest Platinum Games as a possible developer. Their Transformers Devastation game was a lot of camp, great fan service with past voice actors reprising roles, and the gameplay was fun. Was a solid 8/8.5 I thought and I believe costed $40 at launch. Loved that series as a kid and the game was well done for what it was. I think if they took a shot at GI Joe, they would do it right.

I could not disagree with you more on possible Remedy acquisition. If you ask me why I love my PlayStation so much, it is because of the great single player story driven games. Why would I want PlayStation to invest in more driving/multiplayer games when you have do many options from the third parties.
