Fireside Chats, Episode 96: Dog World

People either get dogs or they don't. Heck, sometimes a person doesn't get dogs, and then suddenly, they do (like yours truly). But one way or another, they're an essential part of human life, and have been for thousands and thousands of years. Today's episode of Fireside Chats focuses on our most trusted animal companions, but through a random lens: The world of grooming. Nakita Jenks is an Arizona-based dog groomer, and she comes packing tons of industry stories and a lot of expertise into how to best take care of our furry friends. So let's pick her brain for an hour or so, learn about the ups and downs of the canine world, and perhaps get closer to answering an age-old question: Why can't we resist these lovable, loyal, and silly creatures?

Since becoming a patreon iv went back and downloaded all exclusive shows. Iv literally just finished the one with Erin in Feb 2018 and loved the chat on Lola 😄 here we are with an episode on dogs, tomorrow’s commute to work has just been made that bit better 🙂

Interesting...

I never really thought about what inbreeding can do to a pooch. 😐 And, Lola is really a great pup. She’s adorable.

BettyAnn Moriarty

I agree, she did great! Thanks for listening.

Colin Moriarty

Hahaha, I think they do, too.

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, Lola doesn't have a bad bone in her body. She really just wants love and attention. It could be worse. =)

This was an awesome listen. Nikita was a great guest and she’s super informative. Nikita, if you’re reading these comments, you did an excellent job! Colin, keep pumping out the excellent content.

This was fun to listen to. I remember grandma getting Jimbeau clipped and how funny it was to watch him then strut around. They know!!! 😉

I agree that training plays a big part. But the other major factor is temperament, and breeding. Most people get their pets through pet stores, and these stores are absolutely heinous in how they breed. Breeding farms, inbreeding, horrible conditions. And this can play a huge factor in your dogs temperament, that all the training in the world will not rid of (although you can really curve the behavior). So to some extent, some breeds genetically have certain temperaments. I have a Chihuahua mix, so it doesnt look like a chihuahua fully. But she will bark sometimes in a really annoying way. We had her trained, so she’s a well behaved sweet dog most of the time. But then there are times, where her breeds traits just come out. Tiny dogs like that, sometimes just bark at the wind.

Mewgia

Yes, you put it better than I did. There is debate about which animals, if any, truly achieve this.

As a former Boston owner, I assume you know it'll be a cold day in hell when Lola lets me cut her nails. We'll try from Day Zero with the second one. =)

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, that's what I was looking for, I think. The fundamental idea, as I understand it, though, is not that a creature is self-aware, but that it's aware other entities don't know what it knows or understands, and vice-versa.

This was a fun listen. I don't know if I'm a dog person, but I have two chihuahuas that I love more than life itself. Mine are not evil. Everywhere we go it's nothing but compliments about how sweet they are. Training is everything. In my experience bad dog behavior is the fault of the owner, not the dog. Colin, trimming your dog's nails isn't too big of a deal. You just have to stay calm and make it as pleasant as you can for you both. It also helps to start messing with their feet when they're little. Get them used to you touching their feet and build up trust. :) I wish I had a way to show you the video I have of me filing my dog's nails with an emery board after a nail trim. He's falling asleep he's so relaxed. (Side note: I had a Boston named Judy as a kid and she was my buddy. She routinely saved me from my grandpa's burnt eggs. :D)

Hey Col, the concept you were thinking of from the Sam Harris podcast is theory of the mind. It's a simplification, but this describes a mind's ability to realize that other minds have different thoughts. The Wikipedia page is a solid read.

Kevin Sullivan

That's right, the McCaffrey episode! That was a good one.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you! Good luck in school. <3

Like you, I was never a dog person until I moved in with my now wife about 3 1/2 years ago. She had one and then we got a puppy a few months later. We don't have children, so these guys are basically our entire world and I love them more than I ever thought I could. I loved the episode you did with Ryan from IGN about your dogs, and I'm looking forward to listening to this one later!
