Sacred Symbols, Episode 56: The Sinking Ship
Added 2019-07-23 16:01:01 +0000 UTC
Resistance is futile: The future of video game distribution is digital whether you like it or not. But we're an agile sect of consumers, and even the most stubborn among us can change our buying habits. Corporations entrenched in the ever-stagnant status quo, on the other hand, will inevitably be less fortunate. GameStop in particular seems destined to be consumed by creative destruction, but can the American mega-games-retailer stop the inexorable march of progress? We discuss. Also: PS4's Spider-Man sets sales history, current-gen consoles sales slow to a crawl, Sony's slow censorship march continues, and Plants vs. Zombies is mounting a quiet comeback. As always, listener questions round-out this week's episode, touching on subjects like the future of Konami, Rainbow Six Siege's changing Trophies, the next step for Capcom's Breath of Fire, and much more. Oh, and Sacred Symbols is coming to PAX West 2019! Details within.

Aye I'm back, I'm sure you all missed me, I haven't watched any of the podcasts since April because I've been absurdly busy, but I've kept a subscription the whole time, and I'm happy to be back and trying to catch with SS lol

New Patron here. About the questions about Trophies being changed. Overwatch has completely changed their Characters so the old trophies were impossible to complete so they changed how to get those certain trophies.

To each their own indeed, and at that time in 2008. Far as the Vita goes it was a handheld Jrpg godsend so that's a tougher call. I can't recall any JRPG in 2008 though I liked more than Persona 4. #LongLiveVita
2019-07-27 19:30:46 +0000 UTC
At the time in 2008? Or in 2012 on Vita?
I think there are plenty of JRPGs from before and during that era that are far superior.
To each his own!

Why am I not allowed to criticize a game? People spent seven years telling me how much I'm missing out on something and how I'm stupid for not playing it. Now I'm providing feedback.
I wanna see it through to the end.

Yeah, I think waiting for a climax is actually anticlimactic. End it how you deem fit, but don't put some obnoxious boss fight in my way. Not every game has to be Bloodborne or Wolfenstein.

About GameStop, I live in a small city with no game stores. There was once a store that opened in about 2013 when i was in high school. "Gamers" was what the owner, Phil, named it. They Got a LOT of business. They offered a 4$ an hour play service, were you could play any game in the store. As well as a once a month "all night" Party. and other random services like card game tournaments and such things. they sold retro games, new games, and had several gaming PCs. Sadly they closed down because the owners wife died, and the only people that worked there was the owner and his son. RIP GAMERS. it sounds similar to what Gamestop is talking about.

Tim Willits leaving id Software was personally some really sad news. As someone that does math for a living, the original id Software development team are some of my personal heroes. The original team essentially invented a computer science/mathematical concept to get Quake in full 3d. The original code for fast inverse square root is still a great story to tell, especially when the original comment on the code is still "evil floating point bit level hacking / what the fuck?". I don't think we will ever see a development studio have the type of impact on computer science and development to that level ever again.

I agree completely with the ending. I don’t think most games need to have a end boss or even one boss that turns into 3 bosses (many games to this is often bad executed as a excuse to drag out the ending and add a twist), sometimes that can annoy me and want it to be over.... but I think games definitely need a end moment, “a finally”..

I dare say I can be described as a witcher super-fan. I grew up reading Sapkowski and remember first articles about the game when it was still under Metropolis (at the time it was the polish prodigy studio on gamedev market). What I've seen so far clearly puts Witcher in this 'american/bland fantasy' realm that is just way too far from the roots for me. Don't want to go into politics (massive element of witcher world) but what they showed so far doesn't bode well

So when you guys say GTAV is still in the top sales - is that online or the regular game or both? I ask because the Diamond Casino and Resort pack just came out - not going to buy because I don't play online but just wondering if the figures you guys get differentiate between the two. Also - per the Uncharted discussions - I thought the first 2 final bosses were hard as hell, the third final sequence felt pretty fitting, and 4's was just lame. Just my opinion tho.

I’m really disappointed with this Witcher show that’s coming out on Netflix. The Showrunner is a leftist ideologue and there have been way to many red flags so far that make me think this is gonna be a woke propaganda piece. I guess it’s revenge for Witcher 3 not being diverse enough...

I have so much to say about the game, and so much to say about the people who, for seven years, promised me it was this amazing experience. =)
The shit I'm hearing about it now was never once said to me in the years leading up to me playing. A bit disappointed, if I'm being honest!

I think a major complication for them is that they also don't own a lot of real estate.
Companies that seemingly have no business remaining afloat, like Family Video, own most of their stores, and have tons of equity.
GameStop is done, I would think.

Great episode Lads,
I think regarding exclusives, they tend to be better in most cases because of the budget associated with them. Certainly with the First Party. Sony Exclusives can be developed and sold at a loss, since their primary focus is to sell consoles, not copies.

Re Persona.
If you're not loving the characters, the story and living vicariously as a Japanese teen in high school, you'll likely not think it's great.
The gameplay has never been Persona's strong suit. You could rip that entire aspect of the story out and change it with car racing Initial D style and it'd probably be a better game.
You should have just played Persona 5 with remote play. It's not necessarily much better in the things that make 4 great for me, but the rest of the game is more polished, and the rehashing of character archetypes from 4 wouldn't be an issue.

Destiny 2 changed its "The Prestige" trophy from:
Complete the Leviathan raid or a Nightfall strike on Prestige difficulty to Complete the Leviathan raid on Prestige difficulty!
So I now have the trophy for beating the prestige raid, but not normal mode raid, despite having to beat normal to be able to access Prestige mode!

Another example of trophies changing was back in Destiny 1. There had been two Silver trophies, one each for earning "the maximum amount of marks" with the Vanguard and the Crucible before a weekly reset, but they got rid of that currency and changed the trophies to "achieving rank 1" with each faction. This was a stupid change as there was already a Bronze trophy for reaching rank 3 with the Vanguard.

The RB6 trophy change finally got me the Platinum on it. The only one I was missing was “Win 100 Terro Hunt defense mode” i was only on 60 wins and it was a pain in the ass. Was so happy when i heard about the Trophy change. 👍🏽

I spent several years rowing the Sinking Ship while I was in college. I think if they were to let me run it for a few years, I could course correct the fuck out of it.
GameStop currently operates using a Retail Distribution model. They're just getting a cut of someone else's profits. They're location / volume based and aren't making anything.
If they could switch to a service based model. Where their employees are also skilled techs that could fix, service, and/or upgrade any gaming system or accessory that was offered, the Gaming community would have a reason to keep them in their lives.
Some companies are master distributors for parts on behalf of other bigger corporations. (Like the one I work for). If you knew you could either buy/order whatever part you needed easily, but not only that, have a person help with installation...you'd really harness the community and support it. As opposed to trying to make money off of it.
And as far as building local esports communities. I'd tread it like a local boxing gym or cross-fit training camp. Let people build their own teams and practice locally in my stores. Have sponsored teams go into regional and national competitions.

The thing that makes me wary of superhero games with a large team is that it feels like theres much less focus put into the different characters. Batman and spiderman games were so tight because they focused on one hero.
