KnockBack, Episode 75: Meet Mr. Moriarty

Our beloved KnockBack is a lot of things. It's a celebration of nostalgia and memory, of reminiscing and remembering, and, as it turns out, the many characters that make up The Moriarty Cinematic Universe. As our listenership (that's you!) knows, our dad -- Gerard Moriarty -- comes up all the time, sometimes in jest, other times in seriousness, and always with reverence. So this week, we thought we'd invite him on the show so that you can all meet the man himself. What does Mr. Moriarty think about his sons' popular podcast? How does he feel about being brought up almost every week? And, perhaps most vitally, does he want to correct the record in any way, shape, or form? Without further ado, allow us to introduce our father, the Air Force veteran, the retired FDNY lieutenant, the man who used to make meatloaf with cereal. The person, as it turns out, who makes Colin cry for the very first time in KnockBack history. In a good way, of course. It's Onion Man's time to shine!

Comments

I think that's right: Three greats. =)

Colin Moriarty

Thank you. <3

Colin Moriarty

Your dad didn’t disappoint! Looking forward to a future episode with your other siblings.

Sean Waters

Great episode - knockback is such a unique podcast, I even got abit emotional around the part where Colin got emotional. As an aside, I’m also from county Kerry like Colin’s great great great (?) grandfather.

Jeremiah Lyne

This was a great episode! I really enjoyed it. Like some others have stated, these stories help me to reflect on things as well. I appreciate the authenticity.

TB Lightning

Please enjoy. =)

Colin Moriarty

Thank you for your support, and for your kind words!

Colin Moriarty

I am so excited to listen to this episode Colin!

Sean Waters

Such a great episode man. I love everything about this series and this episode. And getting to know your family this way has been nothing short of capital A Awesome. Thank you for letting us in and I can’t wait to keep learning and listening

Stefano Fontana

I'm really glad you enjoyed our chat. Thank you. =)

Colin Moriarty

Man, it's funny when I think about it. All throughout this episode I was thinking "oh my god, this is so cool, oh my good I can't believe they're actually all three together", and so on. I've been following you Colin back from the IGN era and even though I never saw you in person or at least have a conversation with you, I feel like you're part of my family, dude. I don't wanna sound corny or anything, but listening to this episode genuinely made me feel happiness and joy. And obviously I laughed like a maniac as well. I don't know man...just.. thanks.

Petre Cismigiu

Thank you so much! <3

Colin Moriarty

Thank you. Your syntax is perfect. =)

Colin Moriarty

The Real MCU.

Colin Moriarty

=)

Colin Moriarty

Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

Sorry. =\

Colin Moriarty

I'm incredibly grateful for my family. I'm glad our bond comes through.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

It would be fun to have them on more regularly. I'd love to do an episode with my mom with the both of us sometime soon.

Colin Moriarty

It takes a lot of strength to come out of something terrible like that a better person. Props to our dads.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you so much!

Colin Moriarty

I'm glad to hear that. <3

Colin Moriarty

Thank you for your kind words. Pondering one's past is a good thing, I think!

Colin Moriarty

Thank you so much!

Colin Moriarty

Do you really think that's an appropriate question to ask about my sisters?

Colin Moriarty

It's working... =)

Colin Moriarty

Who’s the favorite child though? 👀

Brandon Soto

This was so good, your Dad is great and can't wait to see him return again.

Marcus Brown

Dude - the argument about future generations using this as their gateway to 'family history' blew my mind. Didn't even consider this. That is why Colin your business model works. My syntax may be off but it is Friday here in Poland 😂

tejotl

Hahahahaha, this is the only MCU I care about. I'm excited to hear this one

Michael Candelaria

What a fantastic episode, can't wait for the family reunion episode!!!

Stuart Whitehouse

My favorite episode of knock back

Michael Choueiri

I’ve had a distant relationship with my parents for years. Doesn’t matter how old we get, I’ll always remember the rough, negative times over the happy, positive ones

Brandon Soto

Awesome episode. Glad you guys still have a close relationship with your dad after all these years. Most people tolerate their families and aren’t as close, if not at all. My dad would never drive 4 hours for anybody.

Brandon Soto

I loved this episode of growing the Moriarty lore. I would love to hear more from the others in the family. Great job as always!

Trent Miller

Another great episode. You guys did a great job. Touching and heartfelt from all of you. I love that you wrote names in the attic. When the house was being built We also wrote our names In the concrete In The garbage , near the fireplace wall. Al Cuto wasn’t happy with me... 😉

BettyAnn Moriarty

Ohhhh... me too! 😂

BettyAnn Moriarty

😳🤔

BettyAnn Moriarty

Colin, I love hearing from your dad. His 9/11 CLS episode is still something I return to every now and again. I hope that you and Dagan can make it a thing where you guys check up on your dad and your mom at least once a year on Knockback. It would be fun to incorporate an episode based on each of them as well, such as an episode about growing up around the FDNY with your dad present or what it was like having a mom who who was a teacher with your mom present. I've been following you since about 2010-2011 and hearing from Dagan every week is a real treat, but getting to hear from your parents is also something special. I especially can't wait to hear from your sisters! Long live the Moriarty's!

James Kinslow III

This is incredibly touching. Especially all the stuff about breaking the cycle. My father was a mistake and was born when his parents were approaching 50 and his dad was not a kind man, old and frustrated and hit my father a lot and was absent. My mother might have been spanked a few times but her parents were so incredibly loving and kind. When I was born when my parents were 29, my father made one rule which is under no circumstances should I ever be beaten or even spanked and to be as involved as possible as he could in my upbringing. I Had my fair share of scolding but it was always warrented. My dad broke the cycle and its the thing I hold in the highest regard for. He was an incredible father to me growing up, taught me about music, taught me a load of outdoor skills, taught me how to skate (dagan my man), and even played a lot of video games with me. He was there at the beginning of all my passions. The man deserves all the respect in the world and hearing how your dad broke the abusive cycle too warms my heart.

Jewelbox

What an awesome episode!! You guys (all three of you) are the best!!!

Jeff Pollard

This episode really resonated with me. After I finished watching it I called my parents to see how they were doing. A very touching episode to say the least.

Jeremy Miller

This episode was fucking awesome. It's so wierd, I don't know your family at all (obviously lol) besides what we hear in the podcast. But listening to you guys talk about old memories gives me the same feelings I get when I talk to my brothers about our childhood. I suppose it makes me ponder my own past. I'm also the oldest sibling in my fam (5 boys) so listening to Dagan is cool because I don't have an older brother haha. I'm glad you guys get fulfillment from doing this in the different ways you've expressed. Like many families, we had good times, but many many painful times as well. Sometimes my brothers and I talk about the past, but it would be really cool to have some kind of official format like this to get the different perspectives and get everything recorded. Keep on keepin' on guys.

Nicholas Cowley

I can assure you that you are right that if you moved home your ranking would drop. I spent my 20s living 1000 miles away and was CLEARLY my mothers favorite. Moved home in my 30s and she realized how much more she liked my sister lol.

Brad Gray

Yes!! I've been looking forward to this episode since the meatloaf and corn flakes story and it did not disappoint. It was neat to get to hear your Dad in a different light (I watched the interview you did with him about 9/11, which was fantastic btw!) Seems like a really special guy. Not hard at all to see how you and Dag turned out to be such great people.

Nate McKinney

It’s not because it’s your dad but this was by far my favorite interview you have ever done!(sorry Betty Ann but don’t worry you still have my heart ♥️) And as a side note, even though we have never met, I just want to say how proud of you I am to be yourself on the internet. Not being afraid to show your emotional side, it shows a strength that not many people have! Side question......How hot are the Moriarty sisters?

Steve

Oddly enough, I know more details about the Moriarty family than most families I know other than my own. A few long time family friends being the exception.

Andy Reno

Loved this episode. Your dad, who shares a name with my own father, sounds like a genuinely pleasant and cool guy. I look forward to the epic ball busting that your sisters will, presumably, bring to the table.

That happens to be our favorite part of the show, too. =D

Colin Moriarty

The dinner was superb. =)

Colin Moriarty

I'm sorry for your loss, Cody, but I'm glad that you can find a lil' catharsis through us. Be well.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you. <3

Colin Moriarty

As one does.

Colin Moriarty

Are you new to this show, Joseph?!

Colin Moriarty

Every episode of KnockBack is a good one.

Colin Moriarty

Dagan is the King of Timing.

Colin Moriarty

We hope you enjoy.

Colin Moriarty

The time is now!

Colin Moriarty

I'm glad my father found his way through his dad's exterior. I didn't want to put him on the spot, but there are some insane stories he's told about his interactions with his father, particularly in his teen years. But we'll leave that for another show, perhaps.

Colin Moriarty

That's not a terrible idea. I'm gonna write the letter when I get back home.

Colin Moriarty

Trust me, my friend, we try not to take it for granted.

Colin Moriarty

The Onion Man.

Colin Moriarty

*nods*

Colin Moriarty

I'm glad we got another chance to do it.

Colin Moriarty

!!!

Colin Moriarty

Thank you. =)

Colin Moriarty

I don't eat until nighttime, so you're asking the wrong man!

Colin Moriarty

=D

Colin Moriarty

=)

Colin Moriarty

Great episode. The tremendous rapport between Dagan and Colin is my favorite thing about the show.

Keith W

Colin I've been listening to you since the Ps3 days even though I never even owned one. I've got plenty of favourite moments over the years but this is by far your best work to date. Listening to the three of you make jokes and share memories was incredible. I think you were right in what you said about why we all love Knockback. It's because listening to you and your family talk about great games, movies, moments etc. reminds us of those great times and the memories around them that we have. Brilliant episode and I hope you 3 enjoyed that Italian dinner

James O'Donnell

Really loved this one. Mr. Moriarty is smooth like butter, and it was great to hear all three of you together. Colin, my life has (seemingly) been very different from yours, but I lost my younger brother a little over two years ago, and the memories of growing up with him are quite nostalgic in the painful way. Thank you both for always being open, honest, and positive. I think I can speak for a lot of your listeners and say that this podcast is cathartic for us, too. - Cody

Cody Howell

Great Episode! As always.

Kosmo Butler

I hit the like button before listening

tejotl

Cereal Meatloaf? Lol

Joseph Flores

I am guessing this is gonna be a good one!.

Ryan Murdoch

My favorite part of this incredible episode was when Colin cries, says “that was a painful time,” (referring to moving out of the old house) and then Dagan cracks a daisy dukes joke right after LOL. This was awesome. Bring Gerard back on sometime!

GameSimp

Can’t wait to listen to this one

Jon Devine

Love. Can’t wait

Blair Sutton

The section where your father discussed his father's past and how it colored their interactions with one another really struck me. My father was an abusive alcoholic when my bother and I were growing up. I always knew he loved us and our mother, but the abuse was often savage. I always thought he was just an asshole until I was about 13 when, in a rare non-violent drunken state, he told me some of the things he had seen occur in South America. He was just a kid in the Army back in the '50s and saw horrific things happen to orphans in an area that had just seen a civil conflict, and at that moment I felt I understood why my father acted the way he did. He's 82 years old now, sober, and living with myself, my wife, and my son, and we have a wonderful relationship. Understanding didn't stop his drinking and violence, but it certainly helped me to cope with it because underneath it, there was a wonderful man.

Forrest Hunter

U guys should bring him with you to dig up the video tape 😆

Tony Colton

This episode is special to me. The love you two have for your father is endearing. I long for the days I could Still have long conversations with my Father.

kevin berger

Never mind, helps if you actually listen to the episode before asking questions haha

Blair Toms

Colin, is this the original audio that you guys were able to salvage or did you do another interview with your dad?!

Blair Toms

Yesssss. Should be one of the best yet. Was bummed when it didn't work out last time. Will savor this one and hopefully not cry listening to Colin do so.
