Fireside Chats, Episode 99: Metalhead

Things tend to lean in a serious direction here on Fireside Chats, and that's all well and good. We often delve deep, get real, and challenge ourselves. But today's episode veers in a decidedly more lighthearted direction. Collin Sparling is a young 20-something music fan who asked to come on the show to talk about his experience singing in a metal band. But our conversation quickly veered into general music talk, our shared love of rock, playing in a band growing up, and how important our parents were (and still are) to our musical development. If you're a music fan and wonder why the subject doesn't come up more on Fireside Chats, you have a point. This episode should smooth things over.

I’m late to the party but what a great episode! I started a metalcore band back in 2012 with some members of my University’s music club and we became fast friends and are still at it today. We started off bonding over our mutual love of Killswitch Engage and doing covers of them, but over time we started to write and demo our own material. We were trash at first, but gradually improved as we went on and were lucky enough to get advice from professionals on how to get studio quality sound on a budget, and meet a great producer. I started off on drums but eventually migrated to vocals due to necessity, since after a bunch of tryouts it became clear that we couldn’t find someone who could scream decently where we were at in Canada.

I gotta look into it. =)

Colin Moriarty

Oh jeez, Terrace House. My wife got me sucked in because I'm a weeb. If nothing else, the commentary segments are excellent.

Jason Bolla

Stray From The Path wears the RATM influence on their sleeve and its pretty good

William Harding

The track Without Water is like, pre-hacktivist sounding and you’d dig it

William Harding

Thanks for the recommendation! I'll peep it.

Colin Moriarty

He was great! Thank you for listening.

Colin Moriarty

I'll check it out. I'm about to roll up. =)

Colin Moriarty

=)

Colin Moriarty

To me, it seemed physically impossible, which is why it was so impressive.

Colin Moriarty

Hey Colin, probably too late for you to see this but if you’d like, check out a band called Stray from the Path. They are a Rap/Metalcore band from Long Island. They are real heavy yet melodic, very awesome and talented musicians. They remind me of a heavier Rage against the machine.

Ryan

Man, this was an awesome episode. Reminded me soo much of sitting around having a beer with my friends from back home talking about STP and AIC. Collins a natural.

Big Swingin' Rick

Seconded! I recently discovered them and can't believe I hadn't heard of them before. They rule.

Collin Sparling

Also COLIN listen to Candiria already if you’re interested in prog-rap metal

William Harding

Loved this discussion. Wild hearing a dude come on your show and talk about This is Hardcore and DEP.

William Harding

Thanks for the clarification! I was thinking to myself that it HAS to be impossible to downpick those two songs, but Master is still impressive as hell. Kirk always kills it!

Collin Sparling

Loved this episode, and it was good to have a positive and uplifting episode! A little clarification about James Hetfield and downpicking. He does not downpick everything. Like disposable heroes and dyers eve like Collin mentioned, those are alternate picked. But everything within reason is downpicked. It really depends on whether it's eight notes or sixteenth notes. Usually any sixteenth note stuff is alternate picked. Master of puppets is probably the most famous downpicked example. At 220 bpm, it's a pretty good right hand work out. But that's all eight note riffs. Also, shout out to Kirk who plays all the same rhythm stuff live that James does, but he gets no cred for that.

Marius Skarsem Pedersen

Seconded for Chon! Polyphia too!

Collin Sparling

I love Ghost!

Colin Moriarty

<3

Colin Moriarty

Thank you for listening. <3

Colin Moriarty

I'm glad you liked our chat! Flaw!

Colin Moriarty

I love early Deftones, too.

Colin Moriarty

I love me some Hacktivist.

Colin Moriarty

I'll look into it! Thanks.

Colin Moriarty

Dredg is life! You're very welcome. Can't wait for the new record.

Colin Moriarty

Jimmie's Chicken Shack was a great Baltimore-based band I used to love. =)

Colin Moriarty

He was great! We had a wonderful rapport.

Colin Moriarty

Early bird gets the worm, JASON.

Colin Moriarty

I've been pretty vocal about this in my career. If Creed was enjoyable then, why wouldn't it be enjoyable now? I dunno. I don't get it.

Colin Moriarty

Hope you enjoy. =)

Colin Moriarty

Maybe yes, maybe no.

Colin Moriarty

Great episode! There’s a lot of really great music mentioned in this episode. So, I’m just dropping by the comments to give a shoutout to my favorite modern band Ghost. And another shoutout to the keyboardist in Rammstein

Richard Duflo

This one was so much fun! A really cool instrumental bandworth checking out is Chon! :)

Ryan Harvey

I’m a small-time musician (3-4 bars/breweries/restaurants per week) and can relate to so much of this conversation. The bromance was palpable in this one, and I loved it. Great episode, guys! -Cody

Cody Howell

You did great on this episode! THOROUGHLY enjoyed it. As a bassist that can't find anyone to play with, definitely have the opposite problem you experienced. Quick Q: what do you think of Periphery IV?

Fat Houdini

This is easily one of my favourite episodes of Fireside Chats. As much as I love the more serious episodes, it was amazing to hear the two of you talk about music, especially a genre I love as much as nu-metal and similar ones discussed. I literally listen to every band mentioned in this podcast from the 90's grunge bands to the smaller 2000's nu-metal like Flaw.

Greg Horsman

I liked Collin as soon as he mentioned Deftones. I really struggle to pick a favourite band, mainly because my taste is pretty broad and it depends on what mood I’m in. Instead, when I get asked that question, I break it down by genre. When it comes to Metal, I think Deftones. No question about it.

Russell Garrett

Fantastic episode gentlemen. I think you guys had excellent chemistry and I have a lot more music to listen to. Being from the UK, the Hacktivists shout was awesome!

HeavyBuddha

Colin, check out a fella on youtube and twitter called Eric D. July, then check out his band called Backwordz. I think you'd dig both.

Jason Stafford

Thanks dude! I need to make my way up to Vancouver soon!

Collin Sparling

We played at Frankie's a ton when I was in the band! Glad you liked it!

Collin Sparling

Man this dude seems hella cool! Really enjoyed the episode. Also love WA being represented!🤘🏽 Seattle's not far from me in Vancouver.

Marcus Brown

I grew up in Toledo,OH (Live in Cleveland now) and Collin sounds so much like my brother it's not even funny. Not to mention my brother is a super talented musician into literally everything. If you didn't know better you could imagine it was my brother talking about instrumental prog bands

Marc Elfering

Hey guys. Long time listener, recent patron, first post haha. This was a really cool episode. I was in a few metal bands for 10 years or so collectively and ultimately gave it up so I could relate to this a lot. I do still write and record in my home studio but haven’t played live in years. Lots of cool stories and memories there and this was a nice reminder. Plus who doesn’t love just talking some music for a while. By the way Colin, you deserve a belated thank you from me for the introduction to Dredg. I think I heard you mention them on Beyond way back in the day. Gave it a shot and they’ve been one of my favorite bands since. El Cielo is just perfection. Great stuff as always though!

Neil Davis

I was in a band that actually disbanded when I started college last year. We played all of the major Baltimore venues: ottobar, Rams Head live, the hardrock, etc. We were called Stuck in Reverse. I’ve been trying to form a new band ever since, but playing the same venues as early RHCP (some of my musical heroes) are memories that I cherish. I’ve played guitar since I was 8 and I will never stop. Really connected with this one

GameSimp

As a metalhead this is might be my favorite podcast CLS has done so far. Collin was very good on mic and you guys seemed to form an instant friendship haha.

CLsquared

I still have my "Beware of the Were-pizza" shirt!

Collin Sparling

That's so funny because my freshman year of college, my friends and I threw together a band just to play a talent show, and we played "Killing in the Name" by RATM. The whole place was screaming "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me!" by the end. We ended up being disqualified, but it was so worth it lol

Collin Sparling

I've had this idea similar to this for a long time but it was from perspective of the drummer in a unknown local/regional band, but i knew it was a matter of time before someone beat me to this! Looking forward to listening later.

Javier Ramirez

I loved the episode Colin and Collin! It took me back to my musician days. I played in a couple of different bands, from Mexican music, covers, and original stuff right before I hung my stick bag. Most memorable moment: 1998 junior year in high school battle of the bands at my high school. We played “Bulls on Parade” By RATM and “Nookie” by Limp Bizkit. We got disqualified because we weren’t supposed to use profanity. It was well worth it. The crowd was singing along to Nookie and a “pit”was started. It was epic!

Javier Ramirez

I like the fact that you guys call out the hate some bands get, which I've never understood. I've always liked Creed and Nickelback (although I do admit Nickelback's lyrics are very questionable).

Juan Paolini

This was excellent, thank you Colin and Collin - was not expecting Horse the Band to ever make its way into a fireside chat conversation. Seconding your shoutout to the song Murder by them.

Being a singer (and guitarist) in a metal band myself, I'm super excited to listen to this! Always appreciate metal music getting some exposure!

Marius Skarsem Pedersen

Hey there, guys! It was a ton of fun to sit down with Colin and talk music. There were a couple things that I'd forgot to mention while recording that I wanted to put out there to give more back-story: First, my dad played guitar and sang in a band himself which was probably the biggest influence on me. His band(s) mainly played 90s-00s hard rock covers, eventually starting to write originals before my dad left to become more of a family man. While I was with Life Before Us, we recorded one EP called Beginnings. You may still be able to find it somewhere, but it's been removed from most of the main platforms because, quite frankly, it doesn't sound great. It was made on a very small budget, and it shows. You can, however, find the music from after my time in the band most anywhere. Life Before Us has since gone instrumental as I mentioned on the show, and they have plans to record with producer Jaime King (The Contortionist, Between the Buried and Me) in December. I couldn't be more excited for them, especially after hearing demos of their new material! I'd be happy to answer any questions you have, and want to thank Colin again for having me on! Hope you guys enjoy the episode. Cheers!

Collin Sparling

Just curious what's your favorite UO album and what do you think of the style shift of the new one?

Connor Peterman

Hello All, Live music to me is what makes music great, it's one thing to listen to studio recordings, but it's a whole new experience listening to live music. The first live band that I ever saw was the Devil Wears Prada touring with Underoath. As a 13-year-old kid, I was blown away by the energy of the place. Mosh pits, Crowd Surfers, and overall everyone jamming out to bands that we all love. There's something euphoric about that. I wouldn't be who I am today if it wasn't for music.

Dennis Sobieski

Awesome change of pace - Colin I gotta ask if anything special is planned for 100th Fireside chat? I hope all CLS shows find consistent and dedicated audience. It is a great content and being a Patreon gives access to a nice variety of shows. Thank you for all your work! Hope you won't retire TOO SOON! 😂
