Side Quest, Episode 62: Gaming's 10 Most Emotional Moments

Comments

It was so good. I agree.

Colin Moriarty

RDR2 story grabbed me and it was like reading a novel. I was invested which doesn't happen too often.

Barzenak

I've yet to play that game, actually. Thank you. <3

Colin Moriarty

RiME an indie game by tequilla studio about a father going through 5 stages of loss of his son...as a dad i couldn't imagine my life without my son...keep up the great work colin...ive been a fan of yours since beyond days...if u need money to refund people for pax lemme know i appreciate all u have done and what u do for gaming

Mr. Figs

I was always quite fond of Garrus as a player.

Mass effect 3 when you have your last goodbye with Garrus. Him telling you if we die and make it to heaven he’ll be at bar on the beach drinks on him. One of the best bromances in gaming. If only the rest of the ending was as emotional and satisfying.

Dagan too of course ! Didn’t know he helped because of the shit storm going on. Thanks Dag !

Anthony Longo

=)

Colin Moriarty

Thank you so much!

Colin Moriarty

I didn't care for the game as much as Sophia did, but she wanted it on the list, and there's no reason not to have it there. =)

Colin Moriarty

I WILL NEVER FINISH NIER!!!

Colin Moriarty

It's an amazing game. I owe Greg something for forcing me to play it on PC.

Colin Moriarty

I don't think I know anything about MGS4's story.

Colin Moriarty

That's a sad one, for sure.

Colin Moriarty

Indeed. Tons of good choices.

Colin Moriarty

Thank Sophia for that one!

Colin Moriarty

I did! I really liked Inside a lot.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

I barely remember that game anymore (Vandal Hearts), but I think I actually had it. Konami, right?

Colin Moriarty

The list could be a thousand moments long, in reality. I'm not even sure I'd pick the same list twice.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you! We're stoked.

Colin Moriarty

Three words colin/sofia: The. Last. Guardian. I rest my case.

Azzan

Great work guys ! You and her did a fantastic job on this.

Anthony Longo

Great list! I know it's 100% because at the time I had a 1-year old of my own, but for me the most emotionally resonant story in Edith Finch was Gregory's. What a fantastic game.

Allan Sweeney

Mass Effect 2 is definitely a stand out for me. Also if you ever finish Nier there are some great moments in there.

Gone home was a special game for me personally[three guesses why]I don’t think a game has affected me on such an emotional level. I know it wasn’t everyone’s favorite game, mainly due to its gameplay and progressive narrative... But it’s probably the most emotional gaming experience I’ve ever had.

I know you are not a big MGS4 fan, but for me that ending scene was everything. The surprising appearance of an alive Big Boss just as Solid Snake was about to take his life really got me.

Kevin Sullivan

When Celes tries to commit suicide in FFVI... that brought tears to my eyes

Ivan

Dagger and Zindane reunited at the end of FFIX, Celes tossing herself off a cliff in FFVI, the entire ending of FFXV, Hero and Jowy good endings in Suikoden II, the prologue and Winter's end in "The Last of Us". So many to list.

That Gears scene with Dom and his wife is what always comes to mind when this question pops up. Glad it made it to your list.

Karl Brown

Great list Col, have you had a chance to play through Inside by chance? That game had the most memorable story for me in the past few years.

Travis Smith

Amazing content this week Colin, thank you.

Dan Parsons

For me MGS3 and final battle with the Boss is one of the most emotional moments. Have an odd one in one of my favourite games from PSX - Vandal Hearts. Ending cut scene with Ash sacrificing himself followed by ending credits marks the first time ever when the game made me cry.

Awesome. I got 4 games of the top of my head but only 2 that really jump out on PlayStation. In no real order, I'd need to include: -Last of Us (Opening scene but even more so, the surgery scene and then there's the lie at the end... Oh and Tess' last stand - This one is in order. This was powerful as fuck) - Gone Home (Played it on PC - I think it was so emotionally impactful because the horror themes set it up to blindside me) - Gears of War (2?) (Dom being reunited with Maria and then his last stand. Fucking awesome) - God of War (PS4) (When Atreus gets sick the tension of the walk with him and the boat ride is a tremendous mix of emotions, followed by the release when you get the blades - Just excellent Game Design IMO).

Very nice, have fun picking your own topics for a bit. They're always informative and fun to watch.
