KnockBack, Episode 77: Our Favorite Teachers
Added 2019-08-01 20:33:43 +0000 UTC
No matter where we're from, many of us spend something like 14 years in mandatory school systems that served only to distract us from our toys, video games, and watching cartoons. Yet there we were, imprisoned and desperate to escape. But school wasn't always an agonizing experience, especially when you had the right teacher helming your class. Today's episode of KnockBack is dedicated to them, to the teachers we've taken with us, the ones that inspired us, helped us, cared about us, and -- ultimately -- stuck with us. From an English teacher who instilled the value of literature, to the history teacher who ran a tight ship except for one specific day a year. From an art teacher who insisted on seriousness from the truly talented, to a math teacher who was perhaps a little to easy on us. Let's chat about our very favorite instructors from our youth. And some of yours, too.
I apologize for being late with this by several hours. As you can see on Twitter, I couldn't upload the file, and still couldn't until I bumped it way, way down to a much smaller file size. Never ran into that problem before. Anyway, sorry!
Finally finished this one up, and it was another great discussion, and a great companion piece to your Fireside Chat Ep. 91 with the public school teacher, David . I did want to expand upon some of your concerns regarding how many uninspiring/poor teachers keep their going in their jobs. I had a huge rant laid out, but thought it might be wiser to take a more concise route.
Like Dagan's wife, I also work in a huge PA school district with a powerful union (though our pay scale does not hit the 6-figure mark), and I’ve seen teachers that may be past their prime, phoning it in, not giving their all like those in your testimonies, etc. It’s tough to evaluate teachers fully on the “results” of the students when so many student variables come into play beyond the control of the teacher (home life, natural ability, outside commitments, etc.). It’s tough to say that better teachers will come into the field to replace poorer teachers when the pool of available teachers to hire is shrinking every year and the competition for jobs just isn’t there. I’ve often felt that increased observations and mentoring from administrators could help, but principals simply have too much on their plates to find the time.
The vast majority of my colleagues are exceptional, but I know that’s not a universal truth of the public school system. It’s going to take some real innovating thinking to correct this.

Yeah, our situation was weird. Everyone was the Clippers EXCEPT our football team, who were the Junkyard Dogs. LOL.

Sorry I finally got around to listening to this episode! As someone who taught for 6 years, it brought back a lot of great memories of my old students. It was also very interesting that you stated that each sports team at bellport had a different name (I think you said the clippers and something else). I'm accustomed to all sports teams just being the school mascot or just the name of the school. Overall great episode!

I am a teacher in Canada and I loved this episode.
I completely agree that standards should be higher for teachers. And there should also be an age limit for teachers. I am a young, passionate (and in my opinion, talented) educator who cannot get a job because these dinosaurs won't leave theirs.
Anyways, great show once again!!!

As for the gun club question, I was in JROTC in high school and we did have a marksmanship team that would shoot air rifles inside the school building and that was only in 2013. This was of course in Alabama.

This teacher conversation is interesting, My experience was at an average high school with average teachers. However I was not the best student, I did not know what I wanted to do, and basically just went to school to hang out. I dont know how much the teachers should get involved with average student such as myself, when there are 30+ other students to tend to. I ended up going back to school in my late 20s to pursue engineering (welding/fabrication) and that experience was far better for me. The class was only 7 people, so we all got very good one on one time with the teachers and extra help with getting jobs etc once we had finished our courses. I guess my point is that the school system is a bad system for the average person, and the teachers probably get jaded doing it year after year, and just focus on the people that fit well in that system. How do you fix that though? I am not sure that you can.

Yay KnockBack, 20sec in and you guys are already being silly geese. FYI The Wall is indeed overrated. Animals is the best Pink Floyd record.

Very proud my Phantom Menace submission won lol. We know you would have gotten to it, but that could have been 1-2 years from now for all we know. Now you’re doing it this wave. Anywho, glad I could contribute to your suffering i suppose. At least Dagan was excited. ;)
