Sacred Symbols, Episode 58: The Unpersoning

The popular gaming convention PAX West chose to host the first-ever live show in Sacred Symbols' history. We were excited, and so were many of you. Oh, but wait, never mind! Weeks after confirming our panel, the powers-that-be at PAX uninvited us from the show without explanation and with no recourse for fans. It's completely unacceptable, and we dedicate the beginning portion of our show to what went down. And yeah, fine, things happened in the video game world that had nothing to do with this, too. PS4 passed a staggering sales milestone, August's free PlayStation Plus games are a step in the right direction, Borderlands 3 is just about ready for primetime, and GameStop inches one step closer to death. Listener inquiries round out our show as always, touching on topics like Ninja's lucrative jump to Mixer, the future of game-sharing, the limits of retro appreciation, and the erosion of the console generation. And, of course, there are topics aplenty unmentioned in this meager write-up. So come aboard, friends. We still love you, even if PAX doesn't.

Sacred Symbols, Episode 58: The Unpersoning

Comments

I wanted to address the last topic at 143:45. I'm 17 and can speak to this for myself and my peers. Personally I very much enjoy early 3d games even if they're extremely clunky or outdated graphically or mechanically. I grew up with some of these but other games of that era i have gone back to visit simply because I love gaming history and expanding my knowledge of it first hand. To be honest this isn't something my peers share with me, which isn't to say they would scoff at ps1 graphics or gameplay, they understand fully that older 3d games aren't necessarily as polished, it's more of just them not being as intensely interested in video games or video game history as I am. I think everyone with decent knowledge about games innately understands that games of that era have clunk and they don't judge it by modern standards as much as by what it was at the time. Sorry for the essay Colin P.S. I know I'm a bit late on this episode, as I've slowly but surely been catching up with Sacred Symbols (which I haven't even started catching up on Knockback or what's left with fireside chats) because I've been very busy with work (and my girlfriend heh).

Tyson Williams

We discuss this in the upcoming episode! <3

Colin Moriarty

In re: to playing on mobile devices, support for the DualShock and Xbox controller are baked into the forthcoming iOS 13 :)

Don Eglinski

Hey Michael, thank you for the kind words! What's important to remember is that, no matter how much various people and entities put me (and us) down, CLS' success as a company and all of your happiness with the product isn't contingent on anyone else winning or losing. I really do believe that keeping the content consistent and quality-oriented is what allows us to succeed!

Colin Moriarty

I wanted to like 5. Always intended to go back to it one day.

Colin Moriarty

Colin, I just wanted you to hear my two cents after getting 7 minutes into this episode...I hit pause, went to the patreon app and pulled my support from KF and put it into CLS. It’s something I’ve been meaning to do for months since I found out you were back to podcasting about games and a bevy of other interesting things besides politics. I have to admit I don’t see eye to eye with you on that front so when you left KF to focus on politics, I never pursued you. But randomly a few months ago I accidentally found sacred symbols and immediately subscribed. Shortly after binging through a metric shit ton of episodes I subscribed to knock back and fireside chats as well. And although I haven’t fully caught up on any of them yet, I’m doing my damndest. Your content is king. You’re fucking killing it. Your intellect is superior to most of you peers putting out similar content and not only has knock back been one of the most entertaining pieces of content in my life, but it has brought my brother and I even closer together after I shared it with him. You and Dagen might as well be me and my brother. It’s great. So FUCK PAX, and fuck anyone trying to bring you down. Your audience will be here for you man, and consider me a life long supporter from here on out. If you hear of anyone that you know had something to do with this, I’m sure I’m not the only fan who would like to hear about it so we can stop supporting their dumb asses. And if there’s any kind of protest being organized to show support for you guys at PAX, just pass on the good word cuz, I’M ALL IN!!!!

SneakerHead24

I enjoyed 4 and 5. The rest are just so old and unless you are very patient you will be annoyed big time. I loved them when they came out but hard to go back to.

Barzenak

I can't really speak to 4.

Colin Moriarty

They aren't exactly the sharpest bunch.

Colin Moriarty

I think we're gonna rest on talking about Dreams for now. LOL.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you. <3

Colin Moriarty

You're being fed the public version then. There are definitely no ads on the Patreon version. It's not even technically possible; they're two different MP3s.

Colin Moriarty

I'm not sure PS4 Pro contributed as much as it could have, considering how supply constrained it was.

Colin Moriarty

The tariff would be at the point of sale domestically, I would assume.

Colin Moriarty

I’m glad you said that about Metal Gear Solid. It was just one of those series I somehow never played, and was a bit underwhelmed by the first game when playing it for the first time last year. I tried playing the 2nd game multiple times and just cannot get into it. Should I just watch the cut scenes of 2 & 3 and play 4?

Josh Lucas

The same game media trying to separate us from the rest doesn't realize that plenty of us are also their audience as well. I listen to a diverse set of podcasts and enjoy different views. CLS is a main source of content I eagerly eat up and I have some friends who have a gaming/music podcast I also am a member of. I listen to some of KF stuff , some WGG stuff and Kotatu's Splitscreen as well. I always thought everyone was in the same boat and the harsh reality is I was wrong. Being an older gamer I tend to side politically more towards Colin but my hobby is about gaming, not politics so I kind of keep all that separate. Sad, the media can not do the same and just be gaming journalists without the bias.

Barzenak

As for the Dreams thing, I know you guys are tired of talking about it but on the campaign thing Chris mentioned, the Media Molecule levels on Early Access are NOT what the single player campaign will be. The campaign will be similar to LBP where there’s a narrative thread to follow in levels. Just wanted to clear that up!

TheSlayerGiant

Great episode! Glad you guys are seeing success (unwanted as it may seem) after the PAX fiasco! It sure made me resub 😁

TheSlayerGiant

Adds came up during the show, so I thought I’d just let you know how many there were. 2 during the show, both Me undies, then 2 at the very end for some podcasts. I’m not complaining, as I know I can up my sub if I really cared about them. And thanks for the great (as always) 2 hour show!

Justin Trammell

Hi Colin and Chris The 100 million PS4 consoles sold is no doubt a massive milestone. Without the mid generation launch of the PS4 Pro, i wonder how far short of this achievement the PS4 suite of consoles would be? Chris from Australia

I'm probably getting a PS5, but primarily because I never bought a PS4 Pro. If PS5 enhances PS4 games as much, or more than the PS4 Pro, it could be worth getting, at least if one of the games I'm interested in comes out for it. I think that if there's tariffs on things produced in China, those would also apply to things imported from other countries but made in China, and if you imported one of those, you might personally be on the hook for the tariff of that product when you receive it. Depending on how they enforce them.

Kaz Redclaw

What's so funny is that PS3 itself sold 83 million units. Not too shabby!

Colin Moriarty

Thank you. I just need time to reassess and recalibrate.

Colin Moriarty

It's obnoxious. LOL.

Colin Moriarty

Made a post on your other PAX video. Please don’t live in fear, Colin. That’s exactly what the haters want you to do. Keep on doing what you’re doing. I hope you reconsider meet & greets down the road. Well equipped with security for sure.

Brandon Soto

Happy for PS4 finally selling 100 Million, coming off of negativity from the PS3 era and people saying consoles were dead/dying. It’s awesome to see, however, being silent & not announcing anything still has me worried for PS5. I just pray they keep the ball rolling.

Brandon Soto

For any interested, I did a video review of Youngblood, played on hard with a (fully) human co-op partner and had similar trouble with the last boss... he’s a pain in the ass for sure. https://youtu.be/mpuRSTVM1jI

Marc Boggio

As I said earlier on Twitter, the gaming industry is exceptionally adept at self-regulating. It's smart.

Colin Moriarty

I know this isn't in the episode, as the news just broke today, but can I just say how proud I am of the gaming industry for implementing stricter policies in regards to loot-boxes? It's not necessarily the loot-boxes I'm happy about. I'm happy that the industry was able to come together and self-regulate before any type of government intervention (in America) took place. This is capitalism at its finest. The consumers spoke, the market listened, and we were able to resolve the issue without having the government make laws about an industry they clearly don't know anything about (prime example, those who say gun violence stems from video games).

Mike

I bought it for my nephews, but I've yet to play it.

Colin Moriarty

They didn't do anything illegal. But it doesn't mean what they did isn't wrong, 'cause it is.

Colin Moriarty

I'm at 100 hours or more playing Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 - 2nd place in GoY running.

Erk-Prime

Ya know I was just thinking for people who bought tickets for PAX to see you after PAX told you to advertise it, isn't that a "bait and switch" to the fans by PAX by canceling you? I think ticket buyers have legs to stand on here

Dav9834

Why not just submit this on the Friday thread?

Colin Moriarty

It's only helped us.

Colin Moriarty

I'm really looking forward to playing it.

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, I've heard that as well. She blocked me on Twitter, so it's at least possible she had something to do with it. Which is ironic, because I made a whole video defending her when the industry was coming in on her.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you. We'll Keep Tuesdays Great.

Colin Moriarty

We had like 200 submissions this episode. =)

Colin Moriarty

Exposure is good, but we'd have preferred positive exposure that is better reflective of the content we make. C'est la vie.

Colin Moriarty

It's totally ridiculous. I have no idea how so many people got that Platinum, but I gave up.

Colin Moriarty

<3 <3 <3

Colin Moriarty

Thank you. <3

Colin Moriarty

Well, fair enough. It's going away anyway, I think.

Colin Moriarty

It's all made up bullshit. But no need to meet their behavior with similar behavior. As difficult as it is, we just gotta rise above.

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, we just gotta keep our heads up and keep on keeping on.

Colin Moriarty

The media isn't dispassionate at all. They fucking suck.

Colin Moriarty

The laughter was because I thought "King of Autism" was a ridiculous insult. We of course don't endorse anything of the sort, and I don't know how anyone could listen to our show and think otherwise. That said, I'm not in charge of or responsible for others' actions and words. Only my own.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you for your kindness and support.

Colin Moriarty

I know, it's in the recent video I did!

Colin Moriarty

Very interesting. No Plat, as I recall!

Colin Moriarty

I suppose, but it makes it more difficult for us to do our jobs, and for us to interact with all of you!

Colin Moriarty

Dude's a hack.

Colin Moriarty

There it is. I was having a brainfart hardcore.

Colin Moriarty

I really prefer to do podcasts in person. So that's gonna be a problem for me. We simply gotta play it by ear.

Colin Moriarty

We appreciate it!

Colin Moriarty

Thank you. I will do my best!

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, I gotta figure out some corny technique to use.

Colin Moriarty

I can't even believe the game won't let you leave the level!

Colin Moriarty

I dunno. I'll have to play it by ear. We have plenty of episodes in the can and still scheduled, so we've time to sort it out.

Colin Moriarty

I see...

Colin Moriarty

=)

Colin Moriarty

Interesting. That'd obviously be more affordable for them than building them here, but then again, just about anything would.

Colin Moriarty

He's a tiny little man.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you. <3

Colin Moriarty

I dunno what I'm gonna do with it yet. Gotta think on it. I have another show idea I want to do, and it might be time to break it out.

Colin Moriarty

MTGA.

Colin Moriarty

Fuck 'em. We're clearly winning.

Colin Moriarty

LOL.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

It is fixed. =)

Colin Moriarty

That's an interesting point. Well, they got what they wanted: More of their audience shitting on us.

Colin Moriarty

Fair enough. =)

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, it was only a matter of time before they tried to deplatform us.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you for your support. Welcome!

Colin Moriarty

Thank you for your kind words. I appreciate it.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you! LGI.

Colin Moriarty

I agree. Thank you.

Colin Moriarty

It's been great for my business, but I'm not trying to make waves, and we'd rather have just quietly and peacefully done our panel. =\

Colin Moriarty

Thank you. <3

Colin Moriarty

So I know this wont make it to next weeks Episode, But here it is. In the Will PS5 have any Switch-like functionality? section When you gentlemen were talking about controllers with PS5. Chris was mentioning how the Xbox elite controller used bluetooth and how it would be awesome If the PS controllers also used bluetooth. Both the Dualshock 4 and the Dualshock 3 both use bluetooth. I have used them on my laptop and my tablet for emulation. Thank you for your hard work guys

Kain

Here's a deep cut ya'll might enjoy. I remember Metal Wolf Chaos solely from the in-case booklet that came with my copy of Xbox Original "Murakumo" This game was largely hated at the time, and had some of the strangest v/o ever, but I remember LOVING it and being so excited for MWC. Glad it's finally coming stateside.

Toren R. (KESA)

Great episode guys! I think the way you handled the PAX situation was excellent. Showed real professionalism in the face of a real dick move by them. Keep making Tuesdays great.

Marc Cairney

Look, I’m not gonna lie. I was a little salty that my whole comment wasn’t read out, but, I get it. My shot at people from Sydney was heard and that’s the most important thing

Adam Barnes

Between the PAX situation and the backlash to Sophia’s ESA news, you guys have exposed a lot of people in the industry and I thank you for it. Colin, why do you think PS5 won’t be as popular as PS4? “Keep those testies zesty.” Classy For that frugal gamer question, I think that if games did go fully digital, it’d be a fight between PS+’s sales vs Xbox Game Pass. I’d lean towards Game Pass on that one.

NeO JD

Really enjoyed the discussion this week. Colin, glad I am not the only one that thinks this Bloodstained grind after completing the main story is a ridiculous grind! I can’t understand why this Platinum percentage can be so high

Tyler R.

When Chris says “Fuck me dry like a cyclops’s eye” I laughed so fucking hard. Never have I ever heard anyone in my life say that until on this podcast. Colin, you damn well know I’m getting my money’s worth. Love you guys, keep up the awesome and engaging content!

Will Hahn

Love you guys, sorry that you are treated this way. <3

Tanner Brant

Colin, the Sony Rewards program is THE BIGGEST PEICE OF SHIT in the entire universe of rewards programs. As you know I'm a huge gamer, but I also own over 650 Blu Ray movies. I have gotten maybe enough points in the lifetime of the program to purchase 90 dollars worth of stuff. This program has been around for 5 years. 650 movies. 100s of games. And still barely got rewarded anything. Should be called The Sony Never Get Any Rewards Program.

Brett Carlson

I would love to know who's talking about your audience being toxic Colin? Also ide love to know who's threatening violence, because I will gladly give out my home address and if anyone wants to meet a Sacred Symbols community member face to face I promise I'm your guy. What a joke. How many times have I said this on these threads about this putrid echo chamber of journalism just spoiling the entire apple cart. God forbid Louie Anderson AKA Jason Schreirer was banned from an event. It would be am uproar. Obviously these people have never listened to one second of Sacred Symbols. This is what really fires me up. To paint such a broad brush and not even know the person or be familiar with their actual product. What a lowlife thing to do. How do these people live with themselves? Oh that's right because they never leave their apartments that they split with 6 roommates because they can manage life on their own. Oh yeah the same people that move into gentrified BLACK NEIGHBORHOODS and take them over. I forget these people were the pinnacle of human morality. Violence is never the answer. But I know plenty of boxing gyms that would let us put some headgear on and hash out the issue. Smart enough to tweet and write articles, but would never confront you in public like a man/woman. I can never respect that. So seriously, please Colin, anyone threatening you send them my way. My name is Brett Nicholas Carlson and I live in the heart of New York City. Ide love to chat. Bitches.

Brett Carlson

Just wanted to throw this out after the PAX controversy: you’ve got the best podcast for PlayStation out there. I can’t believe how far the industry has come after reading the comments on the kotaku article. These people are taking life way to seriously. Let’s have fun, and be a strong community.

David Roecker

In regards to outlets not covering your removal from PAX, I think that does a huge disservice to the gaming community as a whole. A lot of groups (including outlets like IGN) host panels or event at PAX, and the video game media should inform their audience that panels can get canceled at the last minute for no reason. At least that way PAX goers can have a more accurate understanding of the risks involved with spending potentially thousands of dollars to attend these cons. I think Colin has proven to have way more respect for fans than everyone involved in this fiasco.

Logan Cleary

Hi Colin and Chris, Curiosity question; when talking about some of your fans calling a person dumb, retarded, and a “king of autism” you were both laughing. Was the laughter because you enjoyed the comments and are happy to see more of this, or was it laughter at the ridiculousness of the situation? I’m wondering because you didn’t really say much to either encourage or discourage this type of fan response. I am only half an hour into the podcast at the mo though... Thanks!

NJ

Increased my Patreon pledge and this is my first Tuesday that has been made great again. Fantastic episode all around!

Dustin Goncharoff

White phosphorous was the catalyst for the story in Spec Ops:The Line.

There’s No I in LLC

Hey! The weird gap of nothingness in the beginning of the podcast has been fixed. I also threw the newest credits in, since I edited them together today. So, you'll notice that the file has been replaced, but that's the only reason why. <3

Colin Moriarty

I actually had a similar experience to Chris with Resident Evil 4. I picked it up on a sale on PS4 a while ago and it didn't click with me at first. It was only after a few months when I tried it again, and this time it clicked with me for some reason. I finished it and really enjoyed it. Also keep up the great work!

Real Radec

Dude don't stress. I take the 'othering' by games media as a badge of honour. I cut ties with every other scrap of traditional games media a long time ago. I assume most of your fans think the same.

hugplx

Yesterday was a great example of the dispassionate media. Two stories on Kotaku really exemplified this. 1. Ethan Gach’s description of Chris was about his “conservative views” and alluded to 1 sarcastic music video on his YouTube channel, which he claims is “antiSJW media”. It’s kind of ridiculous, since Chris is liberal. But if you knew nothing about him, the article makes him look like an uber conservative troll. Of course for Colin, all Ethan wrote was about that women’s day sarcastic tweet, anti labor views, etc. Hardly anything about the bulk of his content which is all about PlayStation. 2. The other article was a propaganda piece defending the obblets devs Fter their snarky comments. I don’t condone any harassment in any form. The devs signed a exclusivity deal with Epic games and write this condescending as arrogant blog post about it. Many people and backers of the game called them out for it. They tried to engage with them on social media and the devs doubled down on their dismissive rhetoric. Any val9d criticism was dismissed as harassment. The Kotaku article doesnt really mention any of this, but paints them as “victims”.. I’m sure they got vile harassment, unfortunately that’s part of life nowadays. But you can’t term everything harassment for any critiques of your work or conduct. It’s just funny to see who games media supports or dismisses. It’s hard to take games journalism seriously.

Dennis Sparta

FYI, my question came from the quote by our good friend Patrick Henry. Also just wanted to say that I think it’s awesome how you handled the whole PAX thing. It sucks that they completely screwed not only you and Chris but also all the fans hoping to see you there. Thank you for keeping Tuesday’s great!

Trent Miller

Hey guys great show this week as always. I had a few comments on some topics from the show: 1. Regarding fireside chats, I completely understand your concern for the safety of you and your family. I know a lot of podcasts will use Skype or Discord I think to interview people remotely, could this be an option? I know the audio quality is not as good as in person but it might be a better option than canceling the show. 2. Regarding pax giving a reason for the cancellation, such as because of something controversial that your said; wouldn’t that be discrimination? I’m not sure but that could be the reason they won’t answer, in order not to leave themselves open leagally. 3. As far as the adding of micro-transactions to games after their release, I hope that these review sites will go back and update their reviews. I think it’s a really crummy anti-consumer practice and I would hope they would update the reviews to reflect and important change like that for future buyers. Of course I know the majority of copies are sold at launch but it would still help to serve their audience.

Jared

The Quartering has made 2 really good videos supporting you guys in this, he knows Chris better than Colin, but he gave some really fair shutouts to C&C. this is some total bullshit though.

Alex Lawrence

Great show. Keep doing this great work Colin

Robbie Agnew

I enjoyed Wolfenstein: Youngblood very much, thankfully it was only half price and clearly a time grab in waiting for the third installment. That said I agree, the final boss is beyond ridiculous. More then New Collusus. I almost gave up as well but I new it was the end. I beat it with quite the cheese way by constantly running around him shooting causing him to turn and fire wildly making him miss. It worked and I felt it was fair lol.

Marcus Brown

How bout that last boss in Wolfenstein Youngblood?! Lol, literally took me like 3 hours before I could finally beat the last stages of that boss fight. Twas a bitch.

Hello Colin and Chris, I just wanted to comment here about fireside chats, since it is one of my favorite shows. My suggestion is bringing guests that you actually know so you're safe from random people that may hurt you, including retuning guests from other episodes. About the community, my thoughts are with those affected for the simple fact they are CLS fans. I personally never felt any scrutiny for it, but I'm here for you all!

Lucas Gremista

I was hoping that the Red Candle horror game Devotion would be coming to PS4, but apparently it's a Taiwan game.

Carlos Quintanilla

Colin, you and Chris should give each other the Soph and Jess pep signals randomly throughout the show from now on

Richard Duflo

I seem to remember that during the PS3 gen some amount of consoles were being produced in Mexican factories, I even remember Sony put out a short documentary about it for some reason. Might be time for them to consider that option again, even if only for US-bound consoles. If by some chance those tariffs go through, I can't imagine they'd affect electronics prices here in Canada... right?

Travis Johnson

I love how Chris said he's a small god. I believe I'm a king of all the lands. My wife and kids think I'm crazy. Lol

Anthony J Sanchez

Sucks you guys got cancelled. Was the only reason I was going to PAX. Keep on going though!

Dre Rams

I’m glad you guys are standing up for yourselves against all these idiots. Colin I hope you don’t cancel fire side chats. Maybe the show will change so that you only interview people who aren’t every day people. Or maybe interview people at a wework space. They have rooms you can book for a few minutes. A few of us would not mind upping our pledge to help you cover the cost.

Kenneth Oms

Love you guys. Keep making tuesdays great again ^^ You're awesome!!

Saulius Vekteris

Hello Guys! I follow Politics and Gaming very closely, and after seeing how games media didn’t cover your panel getting cancelled, and now seeing how they’re treating Sophia, its clear as fucking broad daylight that games media is just as horrible as mainstream media. If anyone had any doubts about this in the past, Now there’s no reason to say they are not bad lol. Keep up the amazing work guys!

Jeff Caseres

Damn y’all getting creative with the pregnant pauses.

Koray Savas

Love what you two are doing keep up the great work, both entertaining and journalistic!

Eli Boisvert

I can't believe that Kotaku never used the word "PlayStation" even once in their hit piece. They didnt want to. They wanted it to be about politics. But NOT ONCE was the word PlayStation used. Which is what the panel was. I. Hate. Corruption. And I miss the days when it wasn't like this. I miss the Colin and Ryan fireside chats on Beyond. Colin you do great work and your a good person. Don't let anyone say otherwise. Because those of us from when it was just you Ryan and Greg on Beyond know you are a good person, and there's just so much misinformation and hate out there. And I wish those from Beyond like Ryan that do know your a good person would say something publicly. Keep doing what your doing and I'll keep being a patreon, and giving support <3

Dav9834

There is no sound when trying to play this. Is the audio broken for anyone else?

beeperbeeper5

I couldnt care less about how these cunts view me and the rest of the audience. Fuck em.

Josh Moore

The tolerant and open minded strike against silencing any who they disagree with again. Your quality and entertaining content speaks for itself and I’m sure you will see another bump in support from all of us here. Keep up the great work gentleman.

James Galos

Been following since the Beyond days, up through KFG, and now CLS. Finally financially committed on Patreon after this recent controversy. Love you guys.

Alec

Colin, refunding your fans is a legendary move. You've also set a benchmark for how to deal with infuriating situations. These are just two reasons why you're beloved by your fans and why you're absolutely deserving of all your success. A lot of us have been following your career over the years and I know we're all so proud of you.

Forrest Hunter

Just came back to Patreon to support you guys! Thank you for the amazing content. LET'S GO ISLANDERS!

Nyczombie

The CLS community shined bright through this ridiculous fiasco. Love you guys.

FrogLantern

Colin just stand your ground the fucking walls are falling. I hope this whole shit storm will just create business for you, your co-workers and the CLS. Don't let this nonsense create doubt

tejotl

Much love keep doing your thing guys ignore the media ❤️
