Sacred Symbols, Episode 59: Tantalizing Possibilities

While they share some commonalities, Microsoft and Sony are chasing next-gen victory in fundamentally different ways. Sony's doubling-down on everything that made it a resounding winner this go-around -- including a full embrace of its proprietary ecosystem -- while Microsoft seems more eager to lower barriers and spread the love. In a recent interview, the head of Xbox's first party studios candidly admitted that Microsoft sees some of its games migrating to other consoles. Such an admission draws a line in the sand and makes a bet on reach as next-gen's most valuable currency. So let's talk about it. Plus: Quantic Dream jumps head-first into independent waters, Death Stranding's PS4 exclusivity causes confusion anew, another game gets whisked away by the digital storefront grim reaper, and Shenmue III and Destroy All Humans Remake up the ante on collector editions. Inquiries from the audience round things out this week, as always. Thanks to you, we chat about our expectations for Remedy's Control, Infamous and Infamous 2's conspicuous absence from PS4, the persistent high cost of Vita memory cards, and much more. Like Microsoft and Sony of the future, let's be friends and have fun together (or die trying).

I'm 34 in real years, and 85+ in actuality.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you. <3

Colin Moriarty

I'm excited to play it!

Colin Moriarty

Thank you. LOL.

Colin Moriarty

Eh. Just a misunderstanding of some sort.

Colin Moriarty

At 43 years old, I'm proud to represent your geriatric audience. Get those young whipper-snappers out of my gaming lobby!!! Keep up the great work.

Zach Brown

That was the best dollar shave club advertisement yet, actually made me lol. Can’t believe nobody has praised you for it yet. “ I put my finger to his lips and decided I would be the one doing the talking” 😂

Billy boob

Personally I’m super excited for Control and already “preordered it” I often preorder games from amazon im super excited for since they don’t charge you until the game ships. Otherwise I’m not about preordering for any game. Well not true I actually pre downloaded Fell Seal on switch thanks to Colin constantly gushing over it and glad I did. Thanks For that Colin and lets all hope Control is amazing.

Phishoto

I love that IGN lied, covered up the lie with another lie, AND THEN BLAMED WALMART FOR THE LIE!!

GeeIdontknowRick

Patreon disabled the feature, but then rolled it back. Should show up for you any time: https://twitter.com/PatreonSupport/status/1161755738433150976

Colin Moriarty

Shut up, DAVID.

Colin Moriarty

Unrelated to the podcast: is there a reason I can no longer download mp3s of each podcast? The patreon audio player is finiky on mobile and it's always a better experience if I can download the MP3 ahead of time.

Alessandro Bassi

Persona 5 is amazing!

David Kramme

Thank you! <3

Colin Moriarty

I was waiting for a "GOOD DAY SIR!, I SAID GOOD DAY!" during your Persona recommendations rant. Great episode. Keep up the good work!

Daniel Boyer

Yo, I hate you.

Colin Moriarty

You would.

Colin Moriarty

I can't be everywhere and everyone, Neo JD!

Colin Moriarty

I would love to be wrong. I'd love for every game to be great and do great. But I don't think Control is gonna be a big commercial hit. We'll see.

Colin Moriarty

When I found this out a couple of years ago, I nearly had a meltdown. But I got over it.

Colin Moriarty

Colin, there's this little game called Persona 5 you should look into playing. You might not have heard of it but it's a must play.

strawhatninja

I second Arkane having a great pedigree and PREY being a masterpiece.

Gurnico

Thanks for taking my question. I was also surprised that anybody would try to boycott Borderlands 3 at this point. Never played P4, but P5 is the truth. Still my favorite game of the generation. The 1st game I’ve ever bought merch from. ❤️ I’ve seen some Bully 2 rumors so Chris might get his wish. Surprised you didn’t mention Resistance like you usually would. 🤔

NeO JD

olives are GOAT in small amounts in the right combinations

Michal Dudic

I really hope you're wrong about Control sales, Remedy deserves a hit. I think the release date will work in their favor, people are starved for a big new game, this summer has been pretty damn dry.

Michal Dudic

Do you think that the mustard in chik fil a mayo takes that specific condiment to another level? Or is it the quality of the chicken that indeed saves the mustard tainted spread?

Dr. Peter Venkman

Olives are trash, but god dammit, olive oil is great.

Will Hahn

Hmmm...

Colin Moriarty

Yes.

Colin Moriarty

Treadmills are roadbots

Brandon Hardman

I figured out the RSS link finally for my PC but the shows only go back so far so I can't get some of the older MP3's I was wanting. hmmm..Hopefully Patreon figures something out

SwittersYoni

Does it bother you that Pumpkin is a fruit? I mean, I know you hate Pumpkins in general but does this fact make you hate them more?

Big Swingin' Rick

sorry for the ignorance but where is the RSS link?

SwittersYoni

Thank you! Welcome!

Colin Moriarty

*nods*

Colin Moriarty

Hey! A word on "where the download link went." My person at Patreon tells me that, moving forward, the direct MP3 download option has been removed from all Patreons (not just CLS), meaning you can't download the shows onto, say, your computer. This is apparently due to security issues having to do with folks stealing other people's content in this way (and, for what it's worth, people have stolen my content like this... people on ResetEra were once bragging about it). This isn't a choice I agree with, but it's also out of my control, unfortunately. For those that liked direct downloading, you need to use your browser, app, or podcast service with the handy-dandy RSS link you got when you signed up (and which appears in the upper right corner of CLS' Patreon's front page when you use a browser). Sorry again. Thank you for understanding. <3

Colin Moriarty

You're not alone Colin, olives are trash. Till next week.

Marcus Brown

So glad I finally became a Patron, been following Colins work since 2011. Keep up the great work!

Mike Lodato

Yeah, the Patreon app is garbage. I don't really know why they don't prioritize making it better. There are so many really, really, really great apps I use (I'm blown away by the eBay app, for instance), and Patreon is just so far behind on that front.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you. =)

Colin Moriarty

That's right!

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, that's probably where the photos came from.

Colin Moriarty

I don't know what's happening, but I will inquire!

Colin Moriarty

Yeah man, it's an awesome glimpse back.

Colin Moriarty

Olives should be wrung out for oil, and nothing more.

Colin Moriarty

Well that's just unfortunate.

Colin Moriarty

I don't know! I'm going to inquire.

Colin Moriarty

=)

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, I didn't really know one way or another.

Colin Moriarty

I used to play hockey in Bangor sometimes!

Colin Moriarty

Most excellent. Enjoy!

Colin Moriarty

Hmmm... I'm seeing a lot of you hearted this comment! I did nothing different in my uploading of the show. So I think it might be a Patreon problem. Let me look into it. I'm sorry!

Colin Moriarty

Finland? Cool! Have fun.

Colin Moriarty

I hope this helps improve your day. =)

Colin Moriarty

Colin Moriarty

I'm a proud Patreon Supporter, but sweet fucking Christ, can they make it more stable on mobile? God help you if you're streaming and take a phone call. If not for the time code list (Thanks to whatever member of your squad knocks that out) I'd never be able to find my place. But saying that, even the user interface to find the correct spot is trash. You're just clicking and wishing for the best.

Devon McCarty

Colin had some sharp replies today. I really dug it! I appreciate trying to push positivity, but sometimes you just need to let a little venom out ;-)

Forrest Hunter

I agree 100% with Colin. Olives can fuck off

Adam Barnes

Re: Walmart, Alot of the Walmarts are going through a massive remodel right now where they literally rearrange the store. My local Walmart did this a couple weeks ago and all games were taken down for the move. I wonder if it's possible this is what that dude saw and misinterpreted it due to the timing.

Jason Stafford

The download link is missing from all of my pages now - even past ones I downloaded. I use Google Chrome.

Donald Koehne

"Well, that's like, your opinion, man."

David Graham

Olives are DISGUSTING!!!

Andres

I use games as a reference to times of my life as well, if I ever need to know a certain year of something that happened in my personal life, trophies narrow it down really well

Dav9834

I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to side with Chris on this olive discrepancy. You totally need to try the ones without the pits; truly delectable. I also promise to curb the Persona nagging.

David Graham

I went to grade school with a girl named Nicole Pennis.

Keith W

Where's the download link??

Tyson Wilken

Google searching "callipygian" has been the highlight of the month so far. Got a genuine burst of laughter from my desk at work.

Drew Sleezer

Skateboarding is bigger than ever. It has seen a huge renaissance due to Instagram and YouTube making it easier for people to promote their videos. I skateboard different parks around nyc especially now that it’s summer and it’s jam packed with young kids and even people older than dagan. Nike’s skateboarding brand of shoes does a lot for the skate community in terms of saving skate spots from being gutted, and adidas has contests all the time. Tony Hawk is still famous to even newer skaters due to him teaching tricks to people through YouTube and having a twitter show where he goes around asking people if they can kickflip and then he gives them free stuff. New skaters to check out: yuto horigome riding for Nike. Side bar, new Skate game spiritual successor called Sessions launching on steam in September!

Kenneth Oms

Speaking from a small town in maine outside of maybe gamestop's or the KB games that used to be in the Bangor Mall, Walmart is always the go to for video games if I'm not buying digital

Alex Lawrence

The perfect length for my train ride to watch the Battle of the Bay today

James Galos

Am I blind, or is there no download link?

Mason Sewell

On Vacation in Finland, and now I know how I am going to fill the time in between landmarks! Thanks chaps

Robbie Agnew

Literally highlight of my day today, had a 💩 one so far haha 😂
