KnockBack, Episode 92: Our Favorite Songs

In what will undoubtedly be an ongoing, years-and-episodes-long saga, we've decided to talk about some of our very favorite songs, a nice complement to Episodes 39 and 56 of KnockBack, which were all about our most beloved albums and concert experiences. Narrowing songs down is a lot harder, of course, but we did our absolute best, coming up with two lists of 10 tracks each that best represent our tastes, our stories, and our respective life journeys. And, to make it as awkward as possible, we introduce all 20 songs by trying to sing parts of them in order to see if the other person can guess what it is. So listen, laugh, and cringe as we regale you with the songs that we just can't shake (and wouldn't want to if we could).

Great topic. My list in no particular order. 1 Money for Nothing- Dire Straits 2 Darkness on the Edge of Town- Bruce Springsteen 3 Little Wing - Stevie Ray Vaughn 4 Snow (Hey Oh) - Red Hot Chili Peppers 5 Under the Bridge - Red Hot Chili Peppers 6 Stop this Train- John Mayer 7 Money - Pink Floyd 8 Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin 9 Adam Raised A Cain - Bruce Springsteen 10 All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix All predictable classics but I happen to think they are classics for a reason.

Chase Blauvelt

Hell of a track.

Colin Moriarty

Favorite song right now is Sunsoft Batman stage 1 =P

Bobby Bell

I'll throw it on the list. Thanks!

Colin Moriarty

I saw this, and Dagan did too. Pretty awesome. =)

Colin Moriarty

Hey Colin! Please let Dagan know that he willed the driving dog story into existence :D https://edition.cnn.com/2019/11/22/us/florida-dog-drives-circles-trnd/index.html

Vladislav

The singing was fun! Glad you enjoyed it.

Colin Moriarty

Like I said, it's thanks to Pandora!

Colin Moriarty

I reviewed that show for IGN TV when I was in college.

Colin Moriarty

That's what the Internet is for. =)

Colin Moriarty

I loved their record that came out when I was in college. The one with Chaos on it.

Colin Moriarty

That's a distinct possibility.

Colin Moriarty

I like Keep Fishing a lot. Purple Rain is also epic.

Colin Moriarty

Hey Colin, I know this is a few weeks old but I’ll give this a shot. Try out listening to the album Kids See Ghosts it’s an album about depression and mental health with a heavy rock inspiration by Kanye and Kid Cudi. It’s one of my favorite albums of all time give it a listen I hope you enjoy

Elias Salcedo

My jaw dropped when you sang 'I still believe' πŸ˜€ I was happy to recognize something. That song does tend to come up at the right time and uplift me. This was a fun and unique episode, cringey but heartfelt singing especially! Edit: I realised that the version I love is the Tim Capello one, but the original is okay too

JusticeSoulTuna

Colin I thought I never hear of another human being hearing of the field mice I just can't believe you know them I'm from Ireland and never thought someone would know this really obscure British band, I love that band so much, I highly recommend "Emmas House" and "When you sleep" amazing field mice songs. MY MIND IS BLOWING NEVER THOUGHT I SEE THE DAY!!

Jimmy O'Sullivan

I'm proud of myself I knew Space Age Love Song! I noticed it way late on an episode of Psych (the "couples skate" song at the end of the roller derby ep). That reminds me, we need a Psych KnockBack.

Luke Tucker

I truly am an uncultured swine, i have never heard 80% of the artists let alone there songs, RIP.

Chetsnooze

Can everyone here agree that MUTEMATH is an amazing band?

Kenneth Smith

Listening to the podcast as I write this, so apologies if either of you two mentioned it during, but when Dagan mentioned movie theme music I thought it would be a cool idea to do just movie theme or your favourite music from games.

Gavin Newland

After listening to this me and a few friends made our list this was mine in no real order. Weezer-Keep Fishing Tool-The Patient Duran Duran-Red Carpet Massacre Carly Rae Jepsen-Run Away with Me The Sounds-No One Sleeps while I’m Awake Wu-Tang Clan-Triumph Prince-Purple Rain Kanye West- Runaway John Mayer- Slow Dancing in a Burning Room Led Zeppelin When the Levee Breaks

Jason Pettet

This is pretty good! Not as good as The Politics of Dancing, though. =D

Colin Moriarty

New Wave fanatic here. I'm the guy who suggested "The Politics of Dancing" a few months back. Loved all the Duran Duran praise on this episode. Colin, you'd probably enjoy this totally forgotten minor hit by the band The Adventures. It's called "Two Rivers". A Duran-esque tune from '85 that oozes eighties pop whimsy. https://youtu.be/nP5txeBuOBA

FrogLantern

I can't wait to watch it for the first time since 8th grade.

Colin Moriarty

Interesting. I can't find much about them these last 10 years, or more.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

Nice idea. Thank you for listening!

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, those dudes -- and a few others -- make it hard to make that separation, because they're always so in your face. That Waters is basically an anti-Semite is rough.

Colin Moriarty

I'm a big fan of Saturate. Love that record.

Colin Moriarty

Great episode as usual guys. Also, Brink is the first thing I watched on Disney+ it still holds up

Michael Candelaria

Wow that's awesome!

FitzIsCoy

Here is a playlist with their combined top 20. No De La Soul though because they're not on Spotify. So top 19 really. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1tgmPLMGu5kY9LQSaOv4CQ?si=L9AuKij_RyKI5k4Y8R00fA

Jake Watson

We need a song list! I too wrote nothing down. πŸ™„

BettyAnn Moriarty

So true. I love the Beatles... Old and newer songs. Fabulous musicians, IMO. πŸ˜‰πŸ‘πŸ»

BettyAnn Moriarty

Are the songs from the podcast listed anywhere? I'm likely a simpleton and missed it if so. Great episode as always!

MrMilk

According to Spotify Deleware was featured on a song of another band just this year. Don't know if it's the same Deleware or not but it's on their band page.

Joseph Sorisho

I really enjoyed this episode, great work guys!

Matthew Strunk

Check out the Beatles’ album β€œRevolver.” It was made at the inflection point of their career, when they were just starting to stop touring. You can literally feel the shift from old Beatles to new Beatles in that album. It’s my absolute favorite.

GameSimp

I always enjoy the music-centric episodes. I think a Sacred Symbols + (or Knockback) episode about your favorite game, or PlayStation specifically, soundtracks would go off really well, too. Just wanted to share that thought before I got distracted. Thank you both for the great content! -Cody

Cody Howell

Generally I'm into separating the man from the art, but in Roger Waters' case I just can't do it because it hits too close to home for me. Between him and Serj Tankian supporting the Venezuelan government I've lost so much respect for them that I can't help but be reminded of it whenever I hear their music. I love these music-centric episodes. I'm curious whether you or Dagan are into Long Island's own Dream Theater. Up until their drummer Mike Portnoy left they were my favorite band and those albums are still some of my favorite music.

Juan Paolini

So proud I recognized Take a picture by Filter. Blew my mind, dude. Fuck I love that song. Haven't heard it in forever. I remember the video, the dude is like just floating in a boat or something. I'd have to sit down and really think about my list. Would definitely have some Breaking Benjamin. Home, Shallow Bay, or Away, one of those three.

Nate McKinney

Yeah, there's frankly a lot of good/great Duran Duran stuff. Much more than they're given credit for, generally.

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, I think I have this confused. Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

I'm listening to it now. I actually like it (I'm glad the drummer kept that double hi-hat flourish in there, which is so essential to the song's beat), but it's in no way, shape, or form better than the Duran Duran version. =D <3

Colin Moriarty

I really liked that Family Force 5 record Business Up Front.

Colin Moriarty

=)

Colin Moriarty

Dagan deserves all the credit for getting you into The Supremes!

Colin Moriarty

I totally forgot about that song.

Colin Moriarty

It's awesome. Dagan's clever!

Colin Moriarty

It was as if I was writing a saga.

Colin Moriarty

Who loves you?

Colin Moriarty

See above. (Feedback welcome.)

Colin Moriarty

My fear about doing this is ruining the content of the podcast. =\

Colin Moriarty

Nice Duran Duran call out. Considering that you used Come Undone as your song, I'm a bit surprised you didn't mention Big Thing when you were rattling off their albums. Like many Duran Duran albums, it had a couple of radio friendly singles, but there are some songs on there that presage the sound of Come Undone and Ordinary World. Too Late Marlene and basically all of side two are very atmospheric and you can see the through line between those and the singles mentioned above. Great, great stuff. Side note, I used to sit in with a local band on the sax part to Rio. Super fun song to play (and great googly moogly, that bass line).

Sam Dunham

Hey guys loved the episode! Just a quick correction; while yes Penny Lane was released as a single first it eventually would go on to be released as a part of the album Magical Mystery Tour in 1967 (track 3 on side two). Anyways loved your list and excited to make my own!

Leo Maniscalchi

A band called My Darkest Days did a cover of Come Undone. Didn’t know it was a cover till I listened to this episode lol. Went back and listened to Duran Duran’s version....and the cover is better imo haha. Give it a listen! Harder rock version of the OG.

Caleb Greer

Literally had 5 views before I watched it lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9L9GEX9VEbQ they need more love

Jordan Avery

I’ve heard you talk about Dredg for years but I always assumed it was heavier stuff than I prefer but Sanzen is beautiful, also shoutout to Family Force 5.

Jakeytar

Wow that song by Delaware is really good

Jordan Avery

Sanzen. Nuff said.

Thane Goldberg

So glad you guys turned me onto The Supremes. I love anything with James Jameson on bass. And Colin I remember seeing your Dredg hoodie on an old ass IGN video and that’s how I found out about them

Alan

How is the Experience Regina song not on there??

Caleb Greer

I love the β€œfake news” story segment. It is fantastic.

Nathaniel Taylor

I thought I was the only weirdo who wrote down all the songs I found from Pandora just to buy them on iTunes later. I forgot all about that until now

josh

Knockback spotify playlist. Please deliver.

Brian Berghuis

We need a Knockback playlist!
