KnockBack, Episode 99: Dead Space

In 2017, EA shuttered its fully-owned studio Visceral, which bummed a lot of people out, since they were developing a Star Wars game. But back in 2008, before they were called Visceral -- when the team was known by the more quaint moniker EA Redwood Shores -- the talented NorCal developer launched Dead Space, one of the most beloved survival horror adventures ever created. Taking place in the 26th century and loaded with a mixture of sci-fi and religion, Dead Space tells the tale of Isaac Clarke, a mechanic who finds himself in a harrowing situation light years from home and without any sort of practical arsenal. So let's chat about the USG Ishimura, the planet known as Aegis VII, and a mysterious artifact known as the Red Marker. For it's that artifact that transforms humans into Necromorphs, and turns everything on its head, zero gravity be damned.

Colin I have to say I would really recommend going and refreshing your memory and finishing Dead Space 2. You guys overshot a little bit about how much more action oriented it is then the first installment. It is similar to the Mass Effect trilogy. The 2nd game is a much more even balance of action and survival horror/RPG. Story wise it is superior to the first game. Let's not even discuss 3 please. Now that game is a complete departure from anything Dead Space. Complete action fest quick time event nonsense. But Dead Space 1 and 2 are a great combo dual part story. 2 doesnt get remembered because 3 totally ruined it, but Dead Space 2 is well worth both you and your brothers time and would be a great comparative knockback on the dualities of the games.

Brett Carlson

It's really weird that it never has happened.

Colin Moriarty

It would be nice to get back to both, but I'm so bogged-down.

Colin Moriarty

It looks better than I thought it would.

Colin Moriarty

Wonderful episode. Miss this game so much. I really hold out hope that maybe we could get a remastered trilogy collection one day.

Quintin Propes

I'm one of the few people that liked dead space 2 better, but I still loved 1. Never played 3.

Rob Bedford

The visuals of this game are great to this day. For me, it is a great example of the diminishing returns we are experiencing in graphical fidelity. Compare the quantum leap in graphics between Resident Evil 2 (1998) and Dead Space (2008) versus the relatively modest improvements between Dead Space (2008) and Resi 2 Remake.(2019).

Ed White

You would.

Jose Garcia

It's totally nonsensical, especially because 3 is on there.

Colin Moriarty

Roll his ass back onto the set!

Colin Moriarty

idk man lol something about that setting. i did have the same issue with alien isolation so it seems to be being stuck on a ship in space lol

Brandon H

Fair énough.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

How can you have nightmares with a name like DEVASTATOR?

Colin Moriarty

I'd love to get back to 2 and play 3 for the first time... but who the fuck knows if that'll ever happen.

Colin Moriarty

Glad you enjoyed!

Colin Moriarty

One of the very best positives of Xbox. The whole trilogy is backwards compatible on that system.

Benito

Forreal man. Same with Infamous & Mass Effect.

Brandon Soto

Jesus Christ, I just found out that Hugh Downs is still alive at 98 years old. I assumed he died at least 15 years ago.

Greg Ohlenforst

It is a fucking crime I can’t play this on my PS4

John Lynch

After all my bitching and pestering and I didn't even realize this was posted! Thanks for delivering on the goods gentleman. Made my day. As for my username, I've thought of adding the acute over the e but, I just always thought it was a tad pretentious to be so grammatically correct in a username. You have made me reevaluate all my life decisions...

Silentandcliche

I played this game for the first time about 6 months ago. I loved it and it was wonderful hearing what you guys had to say about it! Great episode!

Alex Gates

This is one of the only games that’s given me legit nightmares. Every attempt I’ve had in playing this (got somewhat far) has resulted in a nightmare lol. Idk must be the ambient noise and the claustrophobia that hits something deep in me. Even watching the anime movie of the game gave me nightmares.I doubt I’ll ever be able to finish the game ever so I had no issue hearing spoilers 😅

Brandon H

Although the games lost their way in 2 and 3, the lore stayed really awesome and to this day is probably my favorite horror lore. Great episode!

Robert Graham

Really been looking forward to this episode! Didn't disappoint!

Tanner Brant

Thank you! (And yeah, it's super weird.)

Colin Moriarty

No doubt!

Colin Moriarty

RIP. =\

Colin Moriarty

What did you just say to me?

Colin Moriarty

Great episode! Really do find it bizarre EA has Dead Space 3 on PS Now, but doesn't have the first two on there.

Joseph Sorisho

Easily one of the best horror games of all time, if not the best!

Anthony J Sanchez

Yeeeesss!! (Said that in my Cobra Commander voice) I've been looking forward to this one! What an amazing game. RIP Visceral :(

Nate McKinney

Protip: Kroger Private Selection Sweet Southern Heat Barbecue potato chips are the best potato chips on the planet

Brandon Hardman

We talk extensively about this in the show!

Colin Moriarty

How about that incredible health bar indicator that was the light up the spine of the suit? Unobtrusive but told you all you needed to know about your character's status.

James Ketchum

But there was a Year 1. There just wasn't a Julian or Gregorian calendar yet. Things happened in 1 AD. Nothing happened in Year Zero because it didn't exist then, or later, or now!

Colin Moriarty

There was no year one either. Our current year dating system was not invented until the year 525, and was not widely used u til the 800’s. Nobody in 11 AD celebrated the first full decade, they were using a Roman dating system with a totally different year number. As such, decades are purely a fabrication of the last 10 digits 0-9 in the year count, not a count from the first year.

Keith W

I kinda think he's doing it entirely on purpose...

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, definitely don't listen if you don't want spoilers.

Colin Moriarty

Good to know. The groceries were actually in good shape, but I'd prefer Whole Foods, honestly.

Colin Moriarty

We hope it was worth the wait!

Colin Moriarty

We hope you enjoy!

Colin Moriarty

YAH SISTA'S ASS.

Colin Moriarty

<3

Colin Moriarty

!!!

Colin Moriarty

Aye.

Colin Moriarty

The wait is over!

Colin Moriarty

Enjoy!

Colin Moriarty

This intro game is still so disappointing lol. I was hoping Dagan would get better at making the fake ones more real but it's just been the opposite. Even without that, his reactions to the real story give it away before even getting to the fake one. "Optometry Today - I guess that's a magazine?" c'mon dude! Obviously you're not gonna stick something you're unfamiliar with in the story you made up so that's obviously the real one. Like a few episodes ago the real story took place in some Chinese province he struggled to read! Obviously real per the same reason!

Andres

Playing through Dead Space now for the first time, so I will save this one for until I’ve beaten the game 🙂

Antoni

Colin, just so you know- I work part-time for Amazon Prime while I'm in school, and if you have a Whole Foods near you in Richmond, you can order groceries delivered to you same day via Amazon Prime in most regions. So if you have Amazon Prime and want to put it to good use you may want to give it a shot. The groceries aren't kept in warehouses, they have shoppers that are employed at the Whole Foods market location near you, and they pick your groceries from the shelf and then deliver. I think the delivery charge may even be less than what Kroger charges.

Jack Sibert

What a treat. I've been anticipating this episode

Jack Sibert

Love this. Dead Space and Dead Space 2 are an outstanding combo of games. The third installment had its moments and its pitfalls. I’m excited to hear you two share this topic.

Blair Sutton

Not sure it would scare me now but I am going to replay thru Origin Acces. When I was in college baked out of my mind and playing in a dark room, yea it was.

Erik Peterson

YAH! Oh wait I mean "yah sistahs ass". The contact fake news was a good choice finally Dagans big mistake was it was widely reported when it happened.( I want to say a few years ago)

Erik Peterson

I did not listen yet, but did anyone feel this game was scarry? I admit the opening was a little jumpy but 20 minutes in I felt like I was the killer actively hunting anything that moves. I felt the weapons were a bit overpowered. Non the less, great videogame. Can't wait to kick back and listen. Happy New Year.

OrochiNewsTeam

Kicking off 2020 with a great one, can’t wait to listen to it!

Tyler Brown

YESSSSS!!!!!!!!

Andres

On behalf of the CLS community, I would like to put forth a motion to inaugurate one Dagan Moriarty as an official modern gamer. All in favor, say "aye."

David Graham

I've been waiting for this

Brian Berghuis

Yes, please.
