KnockBack, Episode 113: True Detective (Season One)

We live in a golden age of television, but even some of the best series stick around too long. Unlike many of its contemporaries, though, HBO has a good habit of identifying ideas that don't need to linger, and while True Detective has three seasons, they're all detached from one another. The first season -- running eight episodes back in early 2014 -- is widely considered one of the best miniseries ever created, with exceptional performances, amazing writing, and a setting so thoroughly realized, it's as if it's the main character. So let's delve into the story of detectives Rust Cohle and Marty Hart, the brutal and sadistic murders they uncover in the Louisiana Bayou, and their 17-year long saga to find the truth of these crimes... and the reality of their relationship with one another.

KnockBack, Episode 113: True Detective (Season One)

Comments

I recently watched season 1 of True Detective. It's so damn good!

Miles Williams

I moved for work from South Carolina to Worcester, MA to now, Baton Rouge, LA. Living here has made me love the show anymore. I agree with you 100% about the setting. I won't be here for much longer, but Louisiana has grown on me. It's a very unique, interesting and beautiful place to live. Season 3 if True Detective is also really good.

Jimmy Valentine

I'm really keen on getting to Season 3... but there's so much TV to watch. -_-

Colin Moriarty

Great discussion. True about the setting, it creates such a haunting atmosphere. Season 3 manages to recapture that and is almost as good as the first one. Shame most people haven't seen it but can't blame them after the shit heap that was season 2.

Your Boi Nicky V

Please enjoy. =)

Colin Moriarty

Omg yes. Single best season of a TV show ever. Very excited to listen to this!!

Curse These Metal Hands

Nice. Enjoy!

Colin Moriarty

Seen this season all the way through at least 3 times. So glad to binge a 4th over the next couple nights before I listen to this

Kyle Potter

I'm gonna get back to it. Maybe if and when we do a KnockBack episode on it!

Colin Moriarty

I think he was just hallucinating?

Colin Moriarty

You should! It's a good way to spend eight or nine hours.

Second season is not as good as first one, but man, saying that it is bad - i do not agree, i same as Colin started watching it and stoped after two episodes. But year later i re-watched season 1 with my now wife. She wanted to check season 2 as well, so i gave it a second chance - still one of the best decision i made, just great story. And it will be controversial, but i did not enjoy 3rd season, it was weaker than previous two seasons.

Anastas Lyakh

Started this series Thursday and finished it tonight and wow. So fire ! Just have a few questions about the ending. Wtf was that black hole that Cohl saw at the end before he got stabbed ??????

Anthony Longo

This show was so good, going to have to watch it again now...

Matthew Cooper

I'll check it out at some point.

Colin Moriarty

Season 3 is great btw. Would highly recommend

Andrew

LOL.

Colin Moriarty

Well this is exactly why I like Marty's defense of the area and the people. Rust brings an outsider's perspective, and Marty checks him. It's neat.

Colin Moriarty

If it's nominated, sure. I think we're gonna break up Breaking Bad into multiple episodes.

Colin Moriarty

Gotta love the bayou.

Colin Moriarty

The whole last episode is excellent.

Colin Moriarty

It's all about to come to a head.

Colin Moriarty

Yeah man!

Colin Moriarty

I’d be willing to bet you almost changed “confused” from Kramer to Joe Biden 🤣

Awesome episode! I grew up in Houma, LA (about an hour south of New Orleans), and this show was oddly nostalgic for me. Traveling across Acadiana to see my grandparents in Lake Charles, seeing the oil refineries like I do everyday. Colin and Dagan mentioned the dirtiness and the hopelessness of the setting, and they’re right. But for me, it’s what I knew growing up, and kinda miss in a weird nostalgic way. People don’t like living in poverty, but hell they sure knew how to look for the good in their lives whether they lived in a huge house or in a shack along Bayou Black. True Detective nailed it. Thanks for doing this episode :)

Joey Owens

Does this mean we can vote in, a single season of a show?

Levi Williams

100% agree. I never did finish season 2. I actually think season 3 is just as good as season 1.

Chance Autwell

Great episode! I live right next to Shreveport (Northwest Louisiana), and I must say that Mid to Southern Louisiana is much different than the North. North Louisiana is more like East Texas, whereas the Mid/South is where it begins to get swampy and like you see in the show. Still hot and humid as fuck though, and still rural, just not the same. Thank you for reading my question!

Caleb Greer

Colin if you haven’t seen season 3 it’s much better then the second. It never hits the highs of season one but I still think it’s amazing. It’s back in the Deep South, it has cult and corruption vibes and still has a bit of mystic mystery to it. Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorf are both pretty great in it. Give it a shot.

bix hutch

I love the song that plays during the series finale credits, perfect way to end one of my favourite series.

JP Morris

Completely agree with Colin in the beginning. People can’t just be isolated & not do anything / see anyone forever.

Brandon Soto

Yasssss.

Colin Moriarty

I loved Chernobyl. We'll definitely get to that.

Colin Moriarty

Enjoy!

Colin Moriarty

Yes! One the greatest tension building shows. That episode when Rust goes undercover was the absolute tits!

Winter

Oh boy. Just when I thought I had nothing to do tomorrow this gets posted. My favorite season of television ever — can’t wait.

Sean P.

I strongly recommend it. Only eight episodes long. The final two episodes kept me up for hours the night I saw them reflecting on what I had just seen. Incredible drama.

Tim J Weckwerth

I’ve never seen this show but I’ll give it a shot!

Kenneth Oms

Yass queen

Thane Goldberg

Over here in Hammond man. They totally nailed the mid 90s Louisiana esthetic. One of the best drama series ever produced for Television in my opinion.

Tim J Weckwerth

This first season was always the pinnacle of tv for me prior to Chernobyl but even then, it’s pretty close. The dynamic between McConaughey and Harrelson is unbelievable. Excited to hear what you two have to say about it.

Greg Hadden

I live in Lafayette, LA.. Right in the heart of the setting.. This season is beyond phenomenal imo

Kevin Matte

So happy to see today's episode got posted! And for it to be on True Detective season 1! Today can't get any better!

Tim J Weckwerth

Sorry for publishing a bit late! Thank you for your patience. <3
