Sacred Symbols+, Episode XXXVII: Twin Breaker Spoilercast

If you didn't know, I (Colin) wrote a video game. It's called Twin Breaker: A Sacred Symbols Adventure, it's currently on PS4 and Vita, and thousands of you were kind enough to buy it. Barry (the developer) and I are incredibly grateful. Thing is, writing a video game was a really unique experience. It's the first time I ever truly put a piece of fiction into the world, and while some people didn't care for the plot and setting, many folks did, which was incredibly gratifying. So for this week's Sacred Symbols+, I wanted to take your inquiries about Twin Breaker from a creative standpoint. Where did the idea for the story come from? What were my inspirations? What was it like writing the intro, ending, dialogue, and collectibles? How will the sequel continue what the original set out to do? Twin Breaker was my first game, but it won't be my last. Here's to the maiden voyage.

Good luck on your game! We're wishing you the best.

Really like the game! Trying to get the Platinum now. Playing Twin Breaker and listening to you and Barry talk about the game is really motivating me to start working on my own game even harder. With the quarantine I have no excuse now. Plus I'm unemployed lol.

Matt P

Thank you. <3

Colin Moriarty

Level 29 was a NIGHTMARE.

Daniel Nicholls

I finally got the platinums on both versions. I love you man, but eff you for level 29!!! :)

Alec Shaner

Thanks! But I think if we did it, we'd utilize pros. Otherwise, no point.

Colin Moriarty

Colin. I’m being completely series when I say I would do free voice work for you. I would love to help. Im not a professional but I do have a vast vocal range. I’m here if you need it.

FoxHopSmash

Couldn't have done this without that game.

Colin Moriarty

Had to get it in there somewhere.

Colin Moriarty

Glad God of War: Ascension was one of your influences, Col’.

Brandon Soto

2311. Just hit me that 311 is one of your favorite bands lol. Thats a cool little self Easter egg.

Brett Carlson

Thanks for the explanation. =)

Colin Moriarty

There you go. =)

Colin Moriarty

Cool, I'll look into it.

Colin Moriarty

Was that made explicitly clear? No, I don't think so. I don't think we knew that was going to happen initially, but maybe Barry did.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you for playing!

Really enjoyed this as always Colin! I would love to see those drawings of how you imagined the story art. Regarding the Generation ships found in levels: These were drawn with a bit of damage done to them, also if you hit them multiple times you will see they break down and resemble the bricks that they become in the story lore. This is easier to see in the credits scene when you shoot the ships and see them break down each hit. In the story ending there is also a scene with Colin and Chris in front of a chalkboard that shows a 3 step transformation of the ships from normal, to the state you find them in within levels and finally a brick. So the lore is that they are generation ships that have begun the process of breaking down already.

"I Get Around" by THE BEACH BOYS. That makes more sense. When I earned that trophy en route to the platinum, I thought, "Huh, I never pegged Colin as a 2Pac fan." Great game and great trophy list; thanks so much for this experience.

Zach Brown

The film “Pandorum” was also about a ‘Generation Ship,’ but more horror, science-fiction.

Colin, not sure if this was ignorance on my part but was it ever made explicitly clear that the physical editions have seperate trophy lists? I've got a PS4 physical copy on order but if I'd known about the seperate trophy lists I would have picked up a vita copy too. Hopefully I can find one on ebay or something without someone scalping. Having 3 of the 4 lists at 100% will really trigger my trophy OCD. Also did you ever consider multiple region releases for trophy stacks which invariably leads to higher sales? Loved the game (played better on Vita). Keep on keeping on.

Lee Bull

I was able to get up to and complete level 20 (on PS4). However, my brain is just not wired to handle the 4 paddle system. I was able to S rank all of those levels as well as pick up a majority of the trophies available to that point. I'm okay with that. I enjoyed what I played. Thanks!!

Jeff Pollard

I appreciated your feedback. It was fun to talk about it.

Colin Moriarty

Territory! =)

Colin Moriarty

Thank you so much for playing! We appreciate it. (I've been playing a lot of Vita, myself.)

Colin Moriarty

Ascension was so good. I wish there was more.

Colin Moriarty

Thanks for playing!

Colin Moriarty

Keep going. =)

Thanks for answering my question Colin! I think you’re right that jingoism does somewhat imply a specific foreign policy - but from my interpretation of the story I didn’t take it to be an attack on other countries, rather placing the US on a pedestal. I’d personally liken that closer to patriotism than I would to xenophobia or hyper nationalism but I appreciate the nuance in terms. You’ve given me much to think about - looking forward to your future development endeavours!

I’m from Puerto Rico, PR is basically a colony ☹️

Edwin Garcia

I platted both over the last few days, the vita version has given me the motivation to finish some games on my vita for awhile. Congratulations!

Kelly Perkins

I really enjoyed Ascension, and not just because it starred my favourite Cylon.

Stewart Ogg

I got to the four paddle section and gave up :) It's a wonderful game though, looking forward to many more.

John King

I got up to level 20
