Sacred Symbols, Episode 114: Don't Go Back

We're something like two months and change removed from PlayStation 5's presumed release window, but if you were expecting Sony itself to say anything about it, keep on hoping and dreaming. One of the upcoming console's deepest mysteries remains just how far in PlayStation history its backwards compatibility will allow us to delve; yet if a seemingly-innocuous FAQ from Ubisoft is any indication, you shouldn't expect to put your PSone, PS2, and PS3 discs into the machine. Does it really matter? Let's chat about it. Plus: New Sony financials paint a rosy picture for the PlayStation brand, first party games will continue to be ported to PC, Media Molecule loses a co-founder, Ubisoft renames Gods & Monsters, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Will The Getaway ever make a return? How come no one's talking about 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim? Could Insomniac be playing with our hearts when it comes to its incessant Resistance teases? Did you know Michael Jordan had a Hitler mustache for a little while? It's true!

Comments

Sorry! We can't list timestamps on the audio podcast, because the ad servers would always make them wrong. Ya dig?

Colin Moriarty

Thanks! Glad to make you laugh.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you. <3

Colin Moriarty

Jesus.

Colin Moriarty

Looking forward to being on one day!

Colin Moriarty

See, I just take issue with the whole bacon angle. I love bacon, but sometimes it ruins things.

Colin Moriarty

The numbers are definitely really low.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

Can't do it.

Colin Moriarty

That would be sweet.

Colin Moriarty

No.

Colin Moriarty

LOL.

Colin Moriarty

Good point.

Colin Moriarty

I keep saying I gotta do it, so... I will one day. =)

Colin Moriarty

It's very confusing.

Colin Moriarty

So frustrating that the timestamps are only listed here and not on Google Podcast info

Evan Erickson

Sometimes I think "Eh, there's nothing coming out on PlayStation this week. There might not be anything for me this episode" But when you tune in, you get C&C and THAT'S what you come for. Comedic gold and hanging out with the boys. Always a pleasure. Always a great time. Keep being awesome you guys!

Aaron Treble

Dude colin was in great for this episode. Love the wit and sarcasm. Laughed the whole way through. Hope this doesn’t come off as an insult...

FoxHopSmash

Go for the GTA V & Red Dead Redemption 2 platinum you coward.

Aman Sidhu

You guys are right about the messaging, it's total trash. Same applies for MS, got no sympathy for them re the Series S leak, they shouldn't be keeping a console under wraps 2 months before launch. Anyway, very excited for that Snark Tank episode. Think you'll fit right in Colin, got the same edgy humour.

Your Boi Nicky V

Ranch is like bacon. Adding bacon to something, always makes it better.

Cory Towler

I just can't imagine the numbers to be high at all for players loading up PS1 and PS2 games on a PlayStation 5. If you look at XB1 play original XB game it looks terrible.

The Lizard King

I’ve realized I only comment when I really disagree on a point or to offer corrections, so I wanted to switch it up today. Thanks for the laughs and insight over the past two years. You guys are great, and much appreciated.

Josh Lucas

Do yourselves a favor, play wasteland 3

O

Have a feeling it’s resistance vr that they are teasing

Dom posa

Dipping hot wings in ranch is pretty tasty tho. They even made a Ranch Dipped Hot Wings Doritos flavour.

Sumojoe118

Colin, we all know you run that Cobra Commander twitter account. “I don’t need to be fucking assblasted with sound.” 😄

NeO JD

I think it is importsnt to remember PS Now isn't available in as many regions as Gamepass.

Haydyn

Would be really interested to hear Colin's opinion on PS Now some day! As a recent subscriber I have to say I really like it, despite being sceptical before trying it. I've played some Dead Cells, Mega Man 9 and Resistance 3 over streaming and have noticed no glaring issues like the ones Chris has reported.

DMC

In this case it was likely because Deep Silver published the game and not Microsoft. The game was in development before InXile's acquisition, similar to the situation with The Outer Worlds and Obsidian/Private Division. You do see what you mention with Xbox games on Steam though, so it's definitely a possible avenue for MS in future!

miniAJ

All words are made up, Colin. Also, I only just now realized Microsoft’s strategy after releasing Wastland 3 on PS4. They are probably going to keep releasing their games on PlayStation because the don’t make any sales on their console because of Game Pass. I’m not sure if I’m gonna get a Series X anytime soon but I think it’s pretty enticing to know I get all these games for free** on that platform when I’m staring at the $60 price tag on PlayStation.

Oliver Johnson

I loved it, too, but it has been a while. I wonder if it stands up?

Colin Moriarty

Agreed!

Colin Moriarty

We'll fill the gap where and when we can.

Colin Moriarty

I'm happy to hear that.

Colin Moriarty

I'd imagine this is the sort of thing captured in focus and play testing as opposed to literal QA, but either way... the way you did things at THQ is not the way it's done where I've seen it! I've been in many Sony QA rooms, and they are well-equipped.

Colin Moriarty

=)

Colin Moriarty

A lot, LOL.

Colin Moriarty

Nerd alert.

Colin Moriarty

<3

Colin Moriarty

I love Mega Man X, yes. My dog's middle name is Velguarder. =)

Colin Moriarty

=)

Colin Moriarty

It was insane. That's the kind of thing that shouldn't even get out of the front door.

Colin Moriarty

Correct.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

Hmmm.

Colin Moriarty

If Sony only has X amount of resources, they should go into the things that matter most to the most amount of people. PlayStation Now will be a conduit toward old games. I personally don't care that I can't play PS3, PS2, or PSone games on PS5, and I guarantee you 99%+ of consumers don't, either. And that really does matter.

Colin Moriarty

Ah, MGS4. Those were the days. I still love that they patched the game for Trophies like 10 years after it came out. Baller move.

Colin Moriarty

They don't need to make big purchases like that, I totally disagree. Surgical acquisitions -- and creating new teams from scratch, like they're doing with the new Uncharted team in San Diego -- is the way to go.

Colin Moriarty

Awesome. =)

Colin Moriarty

Steel yourself, Bryan, because they're definitely bringing God of War to PC.

Colin Moriarty

I remember how amazed I was by The Getaway when it came out because enemies reacted to where they were shot and didn't just fall over. That game was sooo good.

Jordan Knepp

Props to Chris for recognizing the problems with the fake drop. Sony doesnt do shit for all the games that come to their store evey week and if you guys can help one of these devs even a little bit that's pretty cool. Shit was still funny anyways so we didnt lose a laugh. Good call Ray Gun, good call.

Reese Redmond

While I will miss the made up game descriptions from the last month or so, I agree with Chris and I do like to see the return of the old format for the drop. Sony needs to step it up. A company that size failing on something so simple is unacceptable.

JT

Avengers is much better than the beta and the monetization is fair. Enjoying it so far

Dom posa

As per the small UI in games I can’t speak for the dev side but I was a tester for years at THQ (old thq) and 2k and the tv screens we used were like small 11” non HD and about 2’ in front of us not to mention sitting elbow to elbow to one another with a real sweat shop kind of feel. We only hooked the games up to the big HD monitor in the conference rooms when we got closer to submission.

Kevin Tuber

YES finally some coverage about Vanillaware!

Katyusha Mauro

I wonder how many people corrected you on the Clyde Drexel comment. Lol. I was also one of them. As a huge NBA fan I got quite the laugh during that segment.

Anthony J Sanchez

Jesus hearing the word "grimgrimoire" gave me goosebumps

The Vegan Necromancer (I Got Consent)

Awesome work Chris and Colin, love that you guys have gone back to a true Drop. You're filling an important information gap, and if Sony isn't taking the time, it just makes your podcast all the more valuable for doing this service. I am sure it's more work, but I appreciate the time you took in putting it together.

James McGivern

Colin, do you like the Mega Man X games? Obviously I know you're a big fan of Mega Man, but I haven't heard you say much about the X series. I've been playing it on the SNES mini, and it's damn good!

Miles Williams

Colin "Not The Scary Kind of Domestic Terrorism" Moriarty

Watch Ergo Proxy

Seems like a fair description to me

Robert

The Outer World text was fucking ridiculous! I had to stop playing that game because I couldn't see anything. They patched it thankfully, but I still haven't got back to it.

Miles Williams

If you have to put ranch on pizza, you’re eating shitty pizza

Maxx Lazos

Podcast is excellent keep it up boys

Robert

The Avengers game looks like it was developed by some of our most hated developers. Corporate business men...

Luke Silletta

“The elegance of mayonnaise” - now mayonnaise is alot of things, including delicious. But elegant?

Owen

Hey Colin, I hope I am not misinterpreting your comments in the episode but you appear to claim that the backwards compatibility thing shouldn't be a big deal for Sony because few people care about this feature, and that you appreciate Jim Ryan's candour. I have not seen any data from Sony on this so I cannot refute your claims specifically to Playstation but I'd like to offer my perspective. After BC was added to Xbox, Phil Spencer tweeted in 2016 that "almost 50%" of Xbox One owners have played a backwards compatible game! (https://www.ign.com/articles/2016/12/14/nearly-50-of-xbox-one-users-play-backwards-compatible-360-games) Furthermore, I distinctly remember when Call of Duty Black Ops 2 became backwards compatible in 2017, 5 years after initial release, the game rapidly ascended the top 10 most played games on Xbox Live! The game even re-entered NPD's top ten best selling games of the month. (https://mspoweruser.com/call-duty-black-ops-ii-enters-npds-top-10-chart-due-backward-compatibility/) I know for gamers on Xbox it is a huge feature, and Microsoft have worked some serious magic here given backwards compatible games are arguably partly remastered, often running at 4K 60 fps with vastly improved loading times on Xbox One X. I realise none of this would necessarily translate to Playstation gamers but an IGN reader poll back in October 2019 revealed the most anticipated PS5 feature was Backwards Compatibility, winning 41.8% of the vote. (https://www.ign.com/articles/2019/10/09/ign-readers-most-anticipated-ps5-feature-is-one-sonys-been-missing-for-a-while) I agree that Sony probably want to sell the same games multiple times, remasters of old games have become incredibly popular in recent years. Surely the success of Crash and Spyro is further evidence that there is interest in these old classics becoming playable in some form regardless? Apologies for the huge post, loving the show so far!

miniAJ

On the topic of having to sign in to another account in a game, nothing was worse than MGS4. In order to play MGO you needed a PSN (obviously), had to sign in to a Konami account and then you needed a Konami ID which was different than the initial Konami account name. The game displayed your Konami ID instead of your PSN online in matches. That shit was such a complicated mess.

Richard Duflo

PC is now PlayStations biggest competitor, so I really hope they reconsider the stupidity of putting games on PC or anywhere but PlayStation consoles. They also need to buy something big, like Kadokawa (From) , Zenimax or see if they can buy NetherRealm on its own. They need to start taking big properties off the table for other platforms...... small buys are pointless and a waste of resources, they need a strategic move.

Bryan King

Hello! So I took advantage of the annual state of play sale playstation does and I picked up the Sony platinum headset. This happened right before the last of us part II came out. I decided I wanted to play the game using the virtual surround sound/3d audio that the game and headset combination offers. It was excellent! It added so much depth. Take care!

Dr. Peter Venkman

Chris doesn't care about PlayStation so asking him about exclusives going to PC...it's a bit predictable what he is going to say. I think it is a huge misstep, absolutely foolish and will damage PlayStation as a brand. I just bought an OLED for next gen and will drop 1500 euro plus on PS5 launch.... I could easily migrate to pc and they would lose one of their more lucrative customers. If they are ok with just having low spending casual customers and losing all their hardcore... this is certainly the way to go, Im already quite angry about this. If they bring GOW to PC, I'm done.

Bryan King

No, you do.

Colin Moriarty

It really is.

Colin Moriarty

No, it's a gaiter.

Colin Moriarty

I didn't say they were.

Colin Moriarty

Kuby.

Colin Moriarty

Shut up, David.

Colin Moriarty

It's a real shame.

Colin Moriarty

=)

Colin Moriarty

Yes, but it could be any project.

Colin Moriarty

We'll never really know until we do it.

Colin Moriarty

Joey, just stop.

Colin Moriarty

I have Sennheiser headphones for music/editing. I like 'em.

Colin Moriarty

No, my vision has actually improved, which is apparently not uncommon for near-sighted people. I haven't worn glasses daily in several years, and I don't wear them at all anymore.

Colin Moriarty

Do it!!!

Colin Moriarty

That'd be nice.

Colin Moriarty

No, thank YOU!

Colin Moriarty

<3

Colin Moriarty

You god damn sons of bitch.

Colin Moriarty

No, it was a really unique game. I'd love to play the original again.

Colin Moriarty

I agree, but I don't think it's gonna happen.

Colin Moriarty

The danker, the better.

Colin Moriarty

Forreal dude

BigArty

First the wearing glasses in the shower like a maniac now the ranch hate... yall need to go to therapy or something

BigArty

Now wait a minute. This is the best episode!!

There’s No I in LLC

The thing that goes over your face but can also be worn around your neck when you don’t need it is called a balaclava. Just so you know! Haha

Blair Toms

Hey colin I wanted to point this out here instead of next week. Microsoft isn’t publishing wasteland 3. Its being published by deep silver and inexil also has 1 more vr game they are releasing as well without micrsofts publishing it either. Mincraft and ori are still the only Xgs that are published by Microsoft on other consoles. While game studios like inexil and obsidian still have some contracts to finish up for other publishers. However after that these studios have only been keeping to their Xbox ecosystem.

Buffalo chicken wings with a side of ranch is amazing.

David Kramme

This is now twice that I've unwittingly used British vernacular in a submission and annoyed you with it. Guess I've just absorbed the lexicon of my ancestors.

David Graham

Jake Z

So you don't think Sony London hiring for AAA project has any weight to it? I agree that it might be too late for the Getaway but idk I feel like something big is brewing in Sony London.

Real Radec

I think Colin's next Twitch stream needs to be a vivisection of Chris to make sure he's a real person with organs that generate natural human byproduct.

Jake Z

I'm 36 and haven't ever successfully blown my nose. After asking a doctor about this, it turns out I have a deviated septum and blowing my nose normally triggers a gag reflex that makes for an unfun time. My doctor suggested bending forward at a 90-degree angle (further than an Asian bow, for example) and blowing that way, forcing the air to flow more naturally, but I decided that after knowing how to live with this condition and use over-the-counter medication rather than look slightly crazy and creating the perception of welcoming a spontaneous spanking in order to blow my nose.

Joey Rawlings

My dudes, open backed headphones are great for gaming. I highly recommend Sennheiser, since they sell great pairs under $250 at the high end. The open sound stage makes it feel way less claustrophobic to wear them. I just know that I can't really appreciate the sound or voice work in a given game the same without actively using a good pair, although I don't have a nice sound system. Cheers.

Max Stahl

Colin has 20/20 vision but wears glasses? Colin, are you being a hipster with fake glasses?

Ben Williams

You sons of bitches better buy the Switch version of Twin Breaker. I don't want to get randomly banned.

Saúl Nolasco

I've never been triggered more by a podcast episode than I have today. Ranch is the one true condiment and it is a MUST have for pizza. The end.

Cole Helgerson

Been praying for PS3 backwards compatibility for so long, it’s honestly whatever at this point. I just hope we get some HD collections of games that are stranded on there like inFamous, Sly, MGS4, etc.

Brandon Soto

Our bouncing baby boys have graced us with their presence and presents yet again. Thank you.

Dennis Johnson

Thanks guys!

Derek Waechter

Colin and Chris, you sons of bitch. Hope you’re staying as stressed free as possible these days.

Timothy Bryant

I know the rose tinted glasses might be on but I love The Getaway. The thought of the series returning on next gen hardware would really get my juices flowing.

The Lizard King

Sony should just delay the console. Everyone will be fake mad for about a day, then will get over it with their huge backlog of unplayed / unfinished games.
