But many of you out there know that we like to use + to sometimes explore what else is going on out there in the gaming world, particularly when it's germane to we Sony fans. And... well... Xbox Series X (and S!) are very much relevant to PlayStation. Today's episode is co-hosted by two people you know well, two folks who have both consoles and can talk about them both with candor and authority, sprinkling in plenty of your thoughts, too. The only question is, which console is currently coming out on top? Time to find out...

2020-12-01 13:53:14 +0000 UTCRE the 4k/1080 UI conversation: I remember back in 2012 when Apple released Retina MacBooks. Since then, a small resolution UI on a screen just looks dated and messy. It's a simple OS, there's gotta be a way to run it in 4K that doesn't take up a ton of resources. Simply put, the UI should run in 4K on your new 4K 'most powerful console ever'. UI elements should be created to match the highest resolution supported. This is the industry standard.

Yeah ps3 have more TF, so what? developers can't use all of it's power because it's hard to do. Xbox x isn't as hard as ps3 to develops, but ps5 is way more easier to develops, xbox tools will be updated, but ps5 will be too. In the end this will amount to nothing since power isn't the reason console "won" the generations, games do.

2020-11-30 00:11:01 +0000 UTCThe performance varies, but so far as a rule of thumb the ps5 runs games better in performance mode and Xbox's vice versa. This is a generalization of course so the ps5 might just be more efficient while the Xbox has more raw capabilities.

I have to say I've been loving it as someone who has gamed on everything except Xbox, and I'm enjoying a library I never got to play with 360 BC. I'm very optimistic about what MS will do in the future after a whole generation of feeling like MS sat on their hands. I will definitely get myself a PS5 but as someone who isn't the biggest fan of God of War or The Last of Us (haven't played Tsushima yet!) I'm curious to see what new IPs will draw me to the system. Sony doesn't typically rely on the same franchises but I guess we'll see.

I'm in a party just about every day with a group of friends and can tell you that isn't true. When you select a party to join it prompts you to either join the voice chat or see who's in it first. Otherwise great show with interesting perspectives!

I do think he was bit off on the games portion, just because he expanded way past the launch window. He is 100% right about the potential of Xbox game pass however, and that's why i'll be picking a series x up in about 6-8 months. But he's dead wrong, imo, about Xbox having more of a draw right now because of the potential of game pass. Also I've got the digital ps5 and I have to say this thing is basically silent. Disk drives are for your grandpa!!!! Final gripe the ps4 vs ps5 thing is incredibly frustrating, my apps keep defaulting to the ps4 version, its really annoying. Sony has to fix this. Yes its basically a single button press to switch, but im on ps5, I shouldn't have to switch anything unless I want to play a ps4 version imo.

Glad Dustin called it out. All in all though this episode didn't work so well for me. I'd rather have waited until Colin/Chris has tried a Series X for them to do this. I'm anti-social and don't like new people though so it could just be me.

2020-11-27 13:03:06 +0000 UTCOne other thought related to the UI being in 1080 vs. games being in 4k - if you are using a projector there can be a significant time to transition between resolutions, a shifting between 4k and 1080p is more jarring than just the visual appearance. As was stated, it's just inelegant and to claim it would take an extra GB of RAM to support 4k - as a developer myself I just don't see how that could be the case. (Edit) On further thought, the better question here is that if they are saying the system UI is taking up RAM while games are active - how much RAM is the 1080i interface taking up then? It sure seems like the whole system UI would be swapped out while a game was active, but in claiming it would take 1GB to have a 4K UI, Microsoft is saying that is not the case.

2020-11-26 19:38:23 +0000 UTCI don't think we'll see many games that end up looking more powerful on the Xbox X than the PS5, because most game devs will primarily focus on tuning performance for the cheaper Xbox console which is not nearly as powerful... on the PS5 a developer can put all efforts into getting the most out of the architecture as is since both digital and disc versions of the console have exactly the same GPU/Memory, so you don't have to make any development tradeoffs to get something to run well on a weaker system.

Tetris is also the game I noticed with, when I played it on launch day and I had to stop after 1 round because I was like “that sound is so annoying to play with” and I had to bring out my Elite controller. The Dualsense has been so cool to use but overall, they’re both great controllers and comfort-wise, xbox is better but the dualsense is def more innovative

Loved the episode guys, did not come off as biased in favor of the Series X to me and I’m a strictly PlayStation gamer, so I definitely have a strong bias towards the console on my own.

It seems a lot of people take personal offence to other people opinions. I enjoyed the podcast. I don't think either of you guys were trying to make objectively true statements but rather offering your personal opinions and experience. You shouldn't feel the need to overly 'prepare'. Conversational and off the cuff comments are more authentic, which is what I prefer. Console wars exist because when people buy an expensive console, a huge investment of their money (and therefore time) has gone into it. Anything that's a big investment becomes entangled with your identity. Any critique of that investment, (even if it's true from someone else's personal perspective) become an attack on your identity. People just have to relax and realise if you enjoy your PS5, that's great. If Matty had a different view, that takes nothing away from you. Anyway, looking forward to that Demon's Souls pod!

I think they were both trying to have a balanced conversation and compare strengths/weaknesses and not have it be 2 hrs of praise for the ps5 which it easily could've been given that this is a playstation podcast. And in truth I think it's way to early to make a comprehensive comparison of these consoles, we have to wait at least a few months for that. All we can do right now is give our impressions. I'll be playing cyberpunk on my base ps4 since my ps4 won't arrive until after Christmas 😅 (wish me luck)

The UI was a little bit finicky at first, but I've grown to enjoy it more as we go. Anyways I'm excited to play cyberpunk on my ps5 and look forward to another episode where I can appreciate Mattys input more, this episode just wasn't it for me.

His room gets warm after he's played on the ps5 so he opens a window. How is this "lying and spewing shit"? Like I said above, he is reporting on his impressions of the console. He is not saying that everyone's ps5 gets hot or that everyone who plays games on the ps5 has to open their windows and that's his experience with the console. If you don't have that experience then great. ACG's ps5 died on him after just a couple days, is he biased for reporting on that? Is it possible that other people have experiences that differ from yours? Could it be that a mass produced product like the ps5 behaves differently from unit to unit?

I work in retail, don’t make a lot of money, and I can afford both consoles. If you can’t afford both, and have to play console fanboy, that’s just sad to me. On Matty’s point about review copies, it seems this time it was just a purely time decision with the Xbox copies as Microsoft made the review kits available first. My PS5 disc drive is the same as Matty’s. It’s loud when you insert a disc or when it’s starting up rest mode, but it’s quiet while games are actually being played. I will say this however, I wish the drive was further up on the console. It’s clear it’s where it is for the vertical position but I think that it’s dumb horizontally when I have to look for the damn opening every time I wanna put a disc in. Great episode. I was on the fence about you guys for a while but I am now a fan. Please point me in the direction of your duo podcast, I’d like to listen. Thanks.

2020-11-25 06:08:15 +0000 UTCI think the reason turning off the console is done this way is because Sony wanted to be able to have the bar at the bottom with just a single tap on the PlayStation button. That way you can join parties, and see who is online, and tinker with music, settings, and so on without having to leave the game. With that change they needed a way to go to the home screen. So that changed to a long press which means the long hold to turn the console changed. I do believe they should add the game base to the main media bar to the left of explore so that way you can see who's online without having to navigate through the bottom bar. I also agree that the horizontal trophies aren't as good. I think they had the activity cards as horizontal and decided to keep that theme. Overall, I think turning off the console is just something we'll have to get used to. It actually takes less time for me to turn off than the ps4 once I got used to it.

Responding to the 4K UI question, having the PS5's UI in 4K HDR has fixed a major gripe/bug that I constantly had with my PS4 Pro. Whenever I would launch a game with HDR the PS4 would have to "re-handshake" with my TV when it switched from RGB to YUV mode, but sometimes it stayed in RGB mode and would cause a constant black flicker. To fix this I would have to go into the video settings and force the output to YUV. But whenever the PS4 had a firmware update or just lost power, it would always default back to Automatic mode, and the issue would happen again. Having the PS5 always be in 4K and HDR means that it detects the correct mode from boot up every time. I know that was a lot of technical jargon and a first world problem, but I definitely sleep better at night now knowing my video output settings are safe.

That’ll just leave PlayStation as the only “hardcore” console with no competition, and that’s not a place we’d want to be.

2020-11-24 22:04:28 +0000 UTCAside from PSVR compatible games, a use case for me for downloading a PS4 version was Borderlands 3 because I needed to upload my save from the PS4 version and didn't want to reconnect my PS4 to do it. Does anyone know how Borderlands 3 saves work on Xbox? Does Smart Delivery automatically carry over your Xbox One save to the Series X version of the game or do you need to download the Xbox One version on Series X and upload the save so you can continue on the Series X version like Playstation?

Just get the big 5-8 3rd party titles and get them exclusive, so they cannot go to Gamepass..... have them headline the service every month. Then it is the end of Xbox's final pillar. They don't have game performance, controller, UI, new games, exclusives or anything else.... there is just one crutch left for xbox to hold on to and it's time to pull it from under them.

It makes finding sales or anything in the store super easy and downloading games straight from the app works really well too. I downloaded multiple games while at work and it just notifies you when they're ready to play.

They started production late and the dev kits weren't as mature as sony's. I've heard from many devs and even digital foundry thinks this as much
