Sacred Symbols+, Episode LXXI: Demon's Souls Remake Spoilercast and Review Discussion

When Demon's Souls silently snuck onto PlayStation 3 in 2009, it garnered critical acclaim both within and outside of Japan, but when it comes to the wider gaming consciousness, it was a slow burn. In fact, Sony thought so relatively little of Demon's Souls that it opted to pass on publishing it in the west at all, a task that was left to Atlus and Bandai Namco in other parts of the world. This has since been widely seen as an infamous business decision that likely cost the PlayStation brand what would ultimately become Dark Souls -- and perhaps an even closer relationship with its developer -- an error the company was unable to rectify until 2015's Bloodborne. These days, though, what's old is new again: From Software's legendary action-RPG has been remade from the ground-up for PlayStation 5 by none other than Texas' own Bluepoint Games, and we've dispatched our two resident Souls-lovin' correspondents to Boletaria to check-in on the situation...

Great podcast boys. Always love to hear Dustin and Matty. Keep the SoulsBourne topics coming.

Kyle

I share Matty’s opinion on Sekiro. More annoying than fun IMO

I can't wait to listen to this one. This is one of my favorite games of all time. Definitely on the post PS3 Mount Rushmore to me. I am glad to see it finally get some love with some next gen gloss. I think the worlds are more diverse and interesting than Dark Souls. Upper Latria is pure nightmare fuel!

TB Lightning

I haven't listen to the podcast yet. Because I'm still a couple of hours from the end. 4 worlds are complete. Now I'm in the swamp of world 5(5-2). It's really an awesome game! One of the best launch games ever. Next week I will listen to this podcast, looking forward to it. Grtz

Really great episode guys. I followed the fighting cowboy guide, went strength and still trucking through it. Really enjoying the game, made me go back and buy the dark souls trilogy in a black friday deal and sekiro, gonna try a plat run on all of them over the holdiays....

Hey Demon Dustin & Maneater Matty, I was a bit bummed with this as it was almost entirely a gameplay and design podcast. I was quite moist for some actual spoiler discussion in regards to the story. After hearing Matty explicitly say he was not interested in the story, I must say I felt lied to. No talk of NPC story arcs, the main quest in Boletaria (with Ostrava and the Knights of Boletaria) certainly left me wanting more. That being said, I really enjoyed you two discussing the gameplay, some of the level design, and your thoughts on the Remake vs. Original. Keep up the great work, gents. Umbasa

FarmerJimmy

Nice work on this episode guys!

Rob Wyburn

hahah dude, it was hilarious. I'm gonna tweet at matty every now and again and just say "titty gobbler"

Kenneth Oms

Haha, I put a lot of effort into coming up with Dickilicious Dustin as they said, Titty Gobbler just came out of my ass

Your Boi Nicky V

Love this episode. Marty becoming The titty globbler has me rolling

More than anything, I'm consistently impressed by the Souls games' level of quality - especially in this remake. I have to admire them from afar though, because the games just aren't for me. I've played a decent amount of Dark Souls 1 and 2, Nioh, and Sekiro (enjoyed Nioh the most, though it made me want to play Ninja Gaiden, haha), but I just can't love them like other people. So for those who enjoy these types of games, I think they got an amazing package in PS5's Demon's Souls.

JusticeSoulTuna

I teleported out of the flamelurker fight because i had no heals and had too many souls too lose but i went right back and beat him with no trouble.

Kaleb

Old Hero is a joke if you use the thief ring. Maybe I should try again without it to get more enjoyment?

Michael

Great conversation guys! I really enjoyed this game, it’s for sure a must play for any ps5 owner *cough* Colin *cough* my only previous experience of souls games was bloodborne and found demons souls much easier!! Umbasa!!!

Rory

Yea I loved it, thanks for answering my question on accessibility so thoroughly. Hope to see more of you on CLS, you damn titty gobbler.

Your Boi Nicky V

Great job guys! Glad to hear from the both of you. I don't play souls like games, but I still enjoyed the show! I played the original at it's debut and thought it was excellent but couldn't get pass the spider boss. Now, with a wife and 2 kids, I don't have the time to die repeatedly to get earn the win. So soul games is not my cup of tea. Keep up the good work, love to hear you guys on the podcast!

Peter Pham

Dustin and I agreed this was one of our best shows we've recorded together. Enjoy!

MrMattyPlays

Still half way thru this beast lol

There hasn't been three spoilercasts in a row, so I'm not sure where you're getting that. I'm pretty sure this is the second spoilercast since July. Dustin and/or Matty will continue to appear as I feel they are needed, and as I feel they can add something to the conversation. Like with Demon's Souls, PS5's biggest launch exclusive which neither Chris or I have much intention of playing. Sorry!

Colin Moriarty

Dustin just a bit of info for you when you were talking about bloodborne and demon's souls possibly being connected, its true...kinda. In the Alpha/Beta for Bloodborne you could bust through some walls and fight Father Gascoigne. When he would kill you he would say "May you rest in peace, Umbasa", you can find the dialog online if you want to listen. It was removed right before the game came out so the alot of the souls community believe these games are connected or at least were in original concept.

Dick McFarmhouse

I haven’t played the remake yet but when it comes to world tendency I don’t imagine it’s something I’ll notice this time around for the simple fact that I will be 1000% better at this game. When it first came out I never saw anything online and the whole concept was difficult. There were times I died so many times that I literally had to start a whole new game because the world tendency was full black and wayyyy too difficult. It was infuriating actually and put me off the game for a while when I was a young kid. I eventually went back and beat the game after like a month break lol but now I’ve beaten all souls games with relative ease and so I feel like it’s more or less a useless mechanic now, but cool none the less.

Adam

Glad to see I'm not the only one struggling with 4-2

Vinny Pepperoni

Hey guys! Glad you're back! As someone who didn't play all the way through the original demon's souls, I do respect that Bluepoint did not touch the code for the game at all; however, there are a ton of enemies that get stuck in animations and are just plain clunky. Take The Maneater for example: the only reason I feel like I keep dying to it/them is because he gets stuck in his flying animation too many times, gets stuck on pillars, clips through things, etc. I feel like It couldn't have hurt to tweak the AI just a little bit to bring it up to modern standards. I was wondering what you guys thought about this? Would that be too sacreligious? Do the wonky enemies add to the charm or to the frustration more for you guys? (Also, maybe updating the healing system to refillable flasks would've been a great quality of life update as well.) farming for grass ain't fun! Adore the game overall though. It's just the little things that definitely show it was the first of the series.

Tyler Cumerford

If you are having trouble fighting bosses use multiplayer, if you make it through a tough area, save and exit the game, upload your save to the cloud, if you die exit the game and download that save from the cloud and boom you’re right where you left off just before the boss. Great way to preserve world tendencies as well. Eff the haters.

Yeah not to be too negative, but two and maybe three spoiler cast in a row doesn't seem ideal to me. I am waiting to play Miles Morales until I am done with the Remastered. Did not play Demon's Souls on the PS5 (beat it on PS3) and I don't see the need for a spoiler cast for that game. I am also ashamed to admit that if Colin or Chris are not involved my interest just drop, passed on the XBox vs PS5 SS+ as well for now and I also did not listen to more than 50% of the SS+ edition they did of the state of RPG.

RD_21

Have skip over this one until I get my hands on a PS5
