Sacred Symbols, Episode 128: An Old Friend

Geoff Keighley's Game Awards went off without a hitch, and -- as usual -- the show came along with a boatload of announcements, release date reveals, and other such newsworthy items. But buried within the event is an interesting truth: Sony only showed up with one game, from the second party, which we already knew about. In doing so, it lined-up PlayStation 5's next exclusive of consequence, giving it a date. Housemarque's Returnal will be expected to carry the load until the likes of Ratchet & Clank, Horizon, Gran Turismo, and God of War are ready. Can Sony rely on its old partner to come through yet again? We discuss. Plus: Neil Druckmann gets promoted, Telltale touches base, the Metal Gear Solid movie stirs to life, and more. Then: Is it time for Bluepoint to make their own AAA game? Why use a console for streaming when smart TVs do the same thing? Are hidden Trophies more frustrating than they should be? What will Colin order from Wawa?

Doesn't seem like a coincidence to me, either.

Colin Moriarty

I doubt the Death Stranding cameo with that director is a coincidence at all. John Voight Robers is a huge MGS fan. He was campaigning for the directing job hard. He even put MGS easter eggs in Kong Skull Island, icluding naming one of the boats in a scene "Grey Fox." It's all definitely intentional. Oscar Issac is a big fan as well. Back in 2017 in an interview with IGN, when asked what game character he'd want to play he said Snake without hesitation.

Nate McKinney

Oh?

Colin Moriarty

That would be cool!

Colin Moriarty

Amen.

Colin Moriarty

It's great, but I've already moved on. I need a map. =)

Colin Moriarty

Yeah man, Geoff did great. Honestly, I don't care who won. We want you to care about our GotY. =D

Colin Moriarty

Cool, good advice.

Colin Moriarty

We'll do an Xbox episode in January (of +).

Colin Moriarty

Congratulations. =)

Colin Moriarty

Thank you so much. =)

Colin Moriarty

Yes indeed.

Colin Moriarty

Fair enough, but I also wonder how much of a symbolic role that is?

Colin Moriarty

"That's because you have no taste."

Colin Moriarty

It seemed obvious... at first.

Colin Moriarty

Right, that's it.

Colin Moriarty

Maybe that's what it was. =)

Colin Moriarty

Please don't.

Colin Moriarty

Yes, but wasn't that through what would become the reformed Telltale?

Colin Moriarty

I just like the controller. =)

Colin Moriarty

Some of you are very easy to please.

Colin Moriarty

I agree.

Colin Moriarty

Yes.

Colin Moriarty

You're almost to the 10,000 master mark.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you for being here! <3

Colin Moriarty

I think you should all give-up on the PSAS revival, LOL.

Colin Moriarty

Why would we mention that?

Colin Moriarty

Interesting.

Colin Moriarty

<3

Colin Moriarty

Calisto looks great. =)

Colin Moriarty

Efficient.

Colin Moriarty

<3

Colin Moriarty

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT.

Colin Moriarty

Yes.

Colin Moriarty

How to cast the game to tv? Is the game full screen or there's blackbar?

Anis

For what it’s worth when PlayStation uploaded the Returnal trailer to YouTube they removed that Hallway door 👀

Tony Mack

Naughty Dog making a Final Fantasy-style game, maybe with the whimsy of FF9, would be insane.

Dylan Neves

In my old age I’ve come to not fret about rushing into a game right away. I don’t have enough time in the day to deal with a BS in video games. I’m excited to play cyberpunk in a year.

Andrew

Pathless is one of the game I can't wait to play, but I wanted to finish some of my backlog first. I also have Spider-Man Remastered and Miles Morales before, but I am definitely playing this. So to answer your interrogation Colin, maybe a lot of people are on the same boat.

RD_21

Very impressed how Geoff pulled this off despite the pandemic we're suffering. Also would've loved to have gone through the awards given out and hear your guy's thoughts but I guess for times sake was best to skip over. Maybe when you guys do your own.

Marcus Brown

If anyone wants to try The Pathless before buying, its on Apple Arcade. I’ve been using my PS4 controller and casting my phone to my tv screen. I recommend

Napoleon in Rags

I know this is a playstation podcast but I would've loved to hear your guys' thoughts on Perfect Dark, and is a Sicilian just a deep dish?

The Chicken Chaser

Well boys I've spent 1,767 hrs and 47 minutes on Destiny 2. Its been since the Warmind expansion and I've been loving, hating frustrated, took breaks with it since (kinda like being married) I can't wait to finally obtain a ps5 and experience the upgrade.

Frank G.

You two have a phenomenal flow to the show. It’s great seeing you guys improve each and every week. Blessings gentlemen.

Joe West

Dude, I called it saying Cyberpunk would get review-bombed, and low & behold, the game runs like shit. Hope CDPR learns from this or goes away for a long time.

Brandon Soto

I agree that Neil Druckmann won't direct Naughty Dogs next game, but I wanted to point out that's it's not unheard of for a company president to direct a game. Hidetaka Miyazaki is the company president of Fromsoft and he directs most of their games.

Miles Williams

The CDPR defenders are almost as bad as the last of us haters

Dom posa

It has a vision mode that highlights places of interest in red even if they're very far away so it's pretty easy to figure out where to go. Great game!

Jake Z

Originally, I liked the look of The Pathless but when I saw the gameplay I checked out. I thought in the preshow Syd mentioned that the applause came from the crew there off stage. Didn’t pay attention to it really. The biggest takeaways from the Mass Effect trailer are that it seems to be in the old trilogy area and that Liara is in it. Crimson Desert looked awesome, frame rate jitters and all.

NeO JD

Also, I thought the mass effect teaser was finally a starfield announcement at first

Jordan Knepp

You guys talked about disco one time before that I remember and it was talking about the devs and their love for Stalin I believe. Colin was saying they had a shrine to him or a picture of him in their office and he didn’t want to support them. That’s what I remember you guys talking about. I think it was about supporting devs with horrible views/practices

Jordan Knepp

Agreed. Naughty Dog is one of the few studios that entirely hand-paint all their textures. They are realistic (and scale up so well) because everything is approached like an oil painting. And like oil paintings, there are many different movements in style and approach. Even then something like Dutch Hyperrealism isn't defined on looking real so much as it is the subject matter, lighting, and color choice. As we move forward I think everyone will need to start collectively taking a more nuanced approach when figuring on what makes games distinct from one another.

Henry Maxwell

Disco Elysium for PS4 was supposed to come out this year but they never gave us a date. Now the final cut edition will come out for PS4 and PS5 in 2021 :)

Conor Wilson

Not to be rude, but in what way is it a step forward? I feel like it's just another open world game in the long list of open world games that littered this gen. Not to be rude, but I have failed to see anything new or exciting about it yet.

I disagree. As an adult I have lots of allergies.

There’s No I in LLC

Dude Colin talks about his asshole and farting every other episode its not that deep or mature.

There’s No I in LLC

I would argue that the look of The Last of Us games can’t be boiled down to just “photo realistic”. There’s an art and design style there that stands out a bit more than Chris gives them credit for in my opinion.

Cole Minder

Can we start a poll to have colin and Chris do a playthrough of it takes two?

Xavier

I would like to say unless I misunderstood, Colin said TellTale was able to finish out The Walking Dead The Final Season when it was actually Skybound Entertainment! Great episode guys, keep it up. :)

coolguyniko

You use the console to play streaming services because sometimes smart tvs the older they get will no longer be compatible with certain apps. example one of my smart tvs it's 4 years old doesn't have hulu on it anymore

Wayde

Let’s make “order Colin’s dinner” a recurring segment please

GameSimp

Did I miss it? Did you mention Perfect Dark? I didn't hear you guys talk about it. Because you've been mentioning The Initiative a lot. So I thought this would be the focus of some conversation.

Nathan Densley

Cyberpunk is a little gta meets mass effect/deus ex

Wayde

I understand Chris’ concern with Sicilian pies needing to be specified, but at least he didn’t have to deal with deep dish Chicago pizza. Easily the least desirable pizza

Stephen Forgione

Sacred Symbols will continue

Richard Duflo

Confirmed, Chris has irrational hatred for Naughty Dog with this week's stupid, angry YouTuber rant. Please, Chris, don't play the next great, realistic Naughty Dog game. We don't need to hear your fatuous takes on it. Naughty Dog does realism better than anyone in the business, except Rockstar with RDR2, so no, they shouldn't stop making grounded, realistic games; everyone else should. And Colin, why don't you push back more vehemently on Chris's dumb rants? "I have to be more careful what I wish for"? What kind of lame, timid response is that? Chris is the one who wants them to return to Jack & Daxter. You obviously disagree strongly, as you've said in the past, so vocalize your disagreement more forcefully! Otherwise, it feels like Chris is running the show as another tedious, angry gamer YouTube channel. And I don't watch those for a reason. I come here for mature discussion.

Jake Z

Damn I've put 6210 hours into Rainbow Six Siege lol.

Dylan Sterben

Shocked to hear "The Pathless" doesn't provide a map nor give you an arrow pointing in the right direction. ☺

Douglas Morreale

Awesome episode! I may be new to the Patreon and the show but I’ve been loving every single episode so far. I got super excited to see the announcement for Perfect Dark, one of my favorite shooters from the N64 era when I played it. Looking forward to seeing more! Keep up the great work!

Tony Zook

Great episode boys. Cause i'll never shut up about it, if Bluepoint were to take their skills from working on various different PS IP into a proper fighting game thatd be sweet. After all the original PSAS ran on the Bluepoint engine

Real Radec

No mention of Xbox’s company the Initiative making Perfect Dark game ?

LE

PSA for my fellow gamers here: check you local Wally Worlds for consoles. Just walked into mine to pick up a surge protector and there was a Series X just chillin. Was told there were 30 or so but no PS5s. P.S. the game awards were boring AF. Orchestra Mario music and the persona performance were the only thing actually fun. Be well.

Thank God Bugsnax wasn't allegorical. Allegories are for children.

Jake Z

Hey guys, haven't been submitting as many questions lately due to work, family, and so many awesome games coming out, but don't worry. I love your content! Keep on trucking cool dudes!

Anthony J Sanchez

That Dead Space looking game, The Calisto Protocol is what I took from the Game Awards the most. That and the laughable Mass Effect will return trailer.

Piston Pants

Shout out to the pathless for also being 5 gb of storage

Adamthm

Thanks for spreading the message that we all need to be a little kinder in this world :)

Thomas Connolly

Real talk who the hell is Nicholas?

Kenneth Oms

I get it Colin. Sometimes it's just too late.

Carlos Fregoso

Sorry for being a hair late. Have a good weekend!

Colin Moriarty
