Sacred Symbols, Episode 130: Our Favorite PlayStation Moments of 2020

For every last one of us, 2020 was an absolutely insane year. And, yes: We're all very, very worn down by it all and happy to wave it goodbye. But this unusual 365 day period also gave us a lot to be pleased with, particularly when it comes to the PlayStation brand we all know and love, a brand that we may owe an extra tip-of-the-cap to in an era dominated by a need for distraction. PS5 was properly revealed and released this year, and lots of awesome games, too, including PlayStation 4's wonderful swan songs. There were some long-awaited reckonings in our industry, some new devs emerged while others closed shop, and rivals have revved their engines, too. Let's cut through it all, see what's what, and make sense of 2020, if not from a grander perspective, then perhaps through a narrower one: Through the lens of the hobby we love.

Sacred Symbols, Episode 130: Our Favorite PlayStation Moments of 2020

Comments

Blessed evening, CCD. I'm writing in while listening to Sacred Symbols 130, great job as always gents but I wanted to add onto something Chris brought up during your PS Vita discussion. The Metal Gear Solid Collection on PS Vita is one of the best ways to experience MGS2, 3 and I'll even add MGS1 in there too. The smaller screen size of the Vita coupled with the OLED display make the visuals pop and being able to play it anywhere seals the deal even if the games don't run quite as well as on 360/PS3. The correction is in that the PS Vita port of the MGS HD Collection was handled by a smaller company called Armature Studios. I'll always wonder why they weren't quite able to crack 60fps on MGS2, but with a nice Vita mod to overclock the processor you can get both games to run noticably better to sweeten the experience. Thanks for helping me get through my night shifts at Costco, here's hoping to bigger opportunity in 2021.

Matt Di Giacomo

It could be. I can't remember anything.

Colin Moriarty

I mean, a PS5 and a high-end laptop are on separate value spectrums, but you do you!

Colin Moriarty

Well, to each his own!

Colin Moriarty

I didn't have the opportunity to avoid spoilers, in order to protect others from them!

Colin Moriarty

I have a memory of this as well, so I think you're right.

Giovanni D'Amico

Colin expressing his appreciation for Chris's use of the word diegetic was a dejavu moment. Has this happened already in another episode or did my reality just glitch?

Nikitas Gagas

As Colin mentioned, it’s not worth my time and effort required to purchase a PS5 right now. Instead of spending more on a scalped console, I decided to buy a high-end gaming laptop. I needed a new computer anyways, and Cyberpunk plays greats and looks beautiful on it. I look forward to getting a PS5 when they are available in stores, even if that takes a year.

The reason I don't like tlou 2 is because I feels tricked by the game previews trailers, this game is like different series compared to the first game. The characters are too different compared to tlou 1, joel suddenly become trusting (despite there's still bandit and cannibal in the world), ellie is loyal and funny in tlou 1 but become means and kind of a-holes in tlou 2, this world zombie become not dangerous anymore, fireflies changed from terrorist to great faction that want to save the world, if I know this before the game come out I won't buy this game at full price, maybe I'll wait until it's $20. I'm from asia and the game just doesn't sell compared to the first game in here, it's discounted 50%, the special edition isn't selling and already discounted 2-3 weeks after the game launch (usually it's the first version to sell out). It feels like tlou 2 is made by the people/writer that hate tlou 1 and it fans, it's not enough to bludgeon one of the fan favorite character to death, they character assassinate the others one too.

Anis

Yeah, I only know about that early death but besides that I didn't know about anything else, I trust naughty dog to give me solid story and preorder the game on psn. But what I get is just misery porn, characters that acted way too weird compared to tlou 1, zombie that seems isn't that dangerous anymore, and confusing story about revenge, it seems according to the game it's okay to kill innocent people as long as it's not the one that kill your father figures.

Anis

I avoided all spoilers for TLOU2. If I saw any article or post relating to the game, I avoided it and the comments. The force awakens was spoiled for me and I refuse to let that happen again. That being said, I genuinely could not stand the game. It is beautiful and well acted, but I think a lot of people have confused good acting with good writing. The story was bad. The gameplay was ok. It’s a gorgeous game and I will always love the soundtrack, but the game itself is a solid 5/10 for me.

Hodge

They were, but they were freaking out. I don't exactly blame them.

Colin Moriarty

That's right.

Colin Moriarty

Shut up, Evan.

Colin Moriarty

We don't really know how many units have been sold. Sony hasn't said. Just vague statements, but no hard numbers. VERY unusual for a console apparently selling so well. I think they're obviously selling everything they can make, but I think numbers may have dropped off (in availability) from launch. We'll see.

Colin Moriarty

I don't think he said that.

Colin Moriarty

I agree on a lot with Chris about tlou 2. However, can I add one point to the hate? Sony was vastly overzealous with their DMCA strikes as well. I was affected by this as well my Twitter account was suspended for just sharing a meme and not even a spoiler. They hit a lot of YouTubers with strikes and kinda add more blind hate than what was needed. It made the annoying YouTubers even more annoying for a lot longer then needed tbh.

Adamthm

You make Dustin drive to VA? Savage.

Jonathon H

Among Us is not a flash game. It's made in Unity.

Evan Bederman

I disagree with you collin about the playstation 5 not needing to be released this year. The sheer fact that it has sold more units in an equivalent time span by quite a bit over the playstation 4 says it was time. Also the fact that it's a backwards compatible system makes it more like a PC. Its just an upgraded version of the playstation product. There's plenty of games to play on it because of this including upgraded versions of playstation 4 games. Consoles are leaning heavy into the PC space and people need to treat it more like upgrading your hardware over a brand new system

Wayde

It just felt the resemblance (especially the Cyberpunk stuff) was VERY similar. Still, really great show. I appreciate when the show is more focused on the opinions of you guys and less the news. Can’t wait for the 4th!

Frank

I might be going nuts, but I remember a while back, Chris saying the MGS3 sucked to play on the Vita and that he'd rather play it on consoles. I even remember writing in about it, saying he was being silly. Looka like he changed his tune.

Jose Horrach

too intimidating for me and my backlog right now... lol

CyberRob

People can stumble upon the same or similar opinions; it happens constantly.

Colin Moriarty

I know my nephews are digging it.

Colin Moriarty

Yes!

Colin Moriarty

Glad you enjoyed!

Colin Moriarty

LOL.

Colin Moriarty

Happy Holidays!

Colin Moriarty

That was cool, for sure!

Colin Moriarty

I see.

Colin Moriarty

Probably something I should have remembered, but also maybe self-serving.

Colin Moriarty

I don't think so...?

Colin Moriarty

Awesome. So glad you're enjoying it!

Colin Moriarty

I'm almost done with the game now, and it's one of my favorites this year.

Colin Moriarty

That was a big one! Long-rumored.

Colin Moriarty

<3

Colin Moriarty

Shut it, David.

Colin Moriarty

Likewise.

Colin Moriarty

I'm way too OCD for that.

Colin Moriarty

It's so obvious when Chris is just repeating stuff he saw on twitter. I am still early into the show, but his point about TGA being The Last of Us show was taken from a tweet. Then, his point about Cyberpunk being three different games is ripped straight from Skill Up's twitter. I generally agree with both ideas, but it's so obvious he's reading these tweets and relaying them almost word for word on the podcast.

Frank

Chris is absolutely right about Crash 4! You guys gotta play it!

Jake Z

I'm pumped about Final Fantasy 16 also, Colin. It looks great! It's definitely giving me old Final Fantasy vibes...which is a great thing!

Miles Williams

Chris really nailed why I would put Ghosts above open world games like HZD, Ubisoft games etc Great episode

Craig Mcguire

“Those guys know tech like I know fucking.” “Damn.” Dustin’s response sold it. 😂

NeO JD

Wow, Interactive Buddy, I haven't thought about that game in more than a decade. Thanks for the blast from the past! Hope everyone with the CLS Family has a safe and happy holiday season

The Late Nate

My favourite moment of the year was literally walking through my gaming history, collecting all of the artifacts and seeing all of the easter eggs in Astro's playroom. Merry Christmas bois!

Sumojoe118

lmao at Naughty Dog continuing to be discussed like they are Jesus, beaten down by Gamers(tm), in Mel Gibson's Passion of the Christ.

Douglas Morreale

Surprised that there’s was technically no mention of twin breaker releasing this year as a favorite moment. Definitely one of mine for sure

Timothy Bryant

Are there any spoilers for TLOU2 in this episode?

Shawn Ryu

Thanks for all the good times CLS. :D Been trophy hunting Twin Breaker and having a blast.

ur ppnballs

My favorite by far had to be the first 3 chapters of FFVII R. Although I loved the game overall those opening hours tugged at my heartstrings and spoke to my nostalgia. From the title screen, the pan out to reveal Midgar, walking out of the train and looking up at the plate during the beginning of Chapter 3, and walking into Seventh Heaven. It had me in happy tears bawling. Merry Christmas my dudes

Alex Cabrera

My favorite Playstation moment this year was the announcement of Demon's Souls remake. I don't have a PS5 to play it, but just the announcement alone was awesome! I'm a huge Souls fan and it's the only Souls game I haven't played. I'm excited to get a PS5 eventually so I can play it.

Miles Williams

To whoever reads this: Merry Christmas to you and those you love. Wishing you all a wonderful holiday!

Hate to be "that" guy Colin, but as 2020 was a leap year it was actually a 366 day period. Had to get one last pretentious douchebag comment in before the end :) Merry Christmas!

David D

Merry Christmas Colin and CLS.

Andrew Morgan

Wow a Christmas day episode thanks. For the record, if you took a week break from publishing episodes over Christmas next year, thats all good.
