KnockBack, Episode 151: Clerks

Every one of us have had a "we're not even supposed to be here today" moment, whether at work, school, or just about anywhere else. For Dante Hicks, though -- a young, 20-something worker at a local convenience store -- being where he wasn't supposed to be ends up netting him one of the most memorable (and also unfortunate) days he could possibly remember. Clerks is Kevin Smith's very first film, and it's an absolute doozy, showing us Jay and Silent Bob for the first time, giving us a glimpse into early-'90s New Jersey slacker culture, and providing a plethora of (largely inappropriate) laughs along the way. So come celebrate a great American comedy with us, and yes, we assure you: We're open!

I only just listened to this but it reminded me to ask. Please, for us brits, watch ‘this is england’ by shane meadows. Beautiful film about growing up in 80’s Britain (which was quite a chaotic and loaded time in uk history). I would love to hear your US perspective on it (more Dagan as i think he would have been a similar age to the characters in it)

Alfie

It would be nice, is all. =)

Colin Moriarty

I've met Kevin Smith (and been to his house!), but have never met Mewes. I've heard he's actually really cool.

Colin Moriarty

Interesting insight. =)

Colin Moriarty

We pushed it back because we realized it's not streaming anywhere, apparently?

Colin Moriarty

I think we're doing it in February.

Colin Moriarty

Enjoy!

This would be a good one.

Col, I feel you on the wanting to see the products in color. Some of the candy for instance caught my eye as I’ve never heard of them before. I genuinely think Randal told Veronica because he knew Dante never would. I saw him as doing the hard task of breaking up for him. Unfortunately, he did it before Dante changed his mind. “I would never leave the house.” Geez Colin. 😂 If Dagan says “waxing philosophical” 1 more time... ☠️

At one time?

Funny enough before I moved to NYC from Florida and then moved to NJ, the town I lived in is where Kevin Smiths mom lives. There were times where you could run into him at Target or Massage Envy. Really nice guy. I ended up meeting Jason Mewes as well, he was super nice and generous as well.

Really enjoyable episode! What I loved about the movie back in the day (not sure it has aged that well) was that the fact that this dead end job was the centres of their universes and much of their lives revolved around it as well as the idiosyncrasies of the customers lent it self well to other similar roles- so I, working in pubs in England as a 17-23 year old, saw myself and how my life was lived through my place of work in Randall et al

One of my favorite films of all time! Excited to listen to this episode! Also became a huge fan of Comic Book Men as well which in turn sent down the rabbit hole of discovering Tell Em Steve Dave and discovering podcasts. Eventually I wanted more podcasts and stumbled upon Sacred Symbols. So now we’ve come full circle!

Tony Zook

Yo, I usually only listen to Sacred Symbols & SS+ but the thought of 37 dicks is bringing me in.
