KnockBack, Episode 152: Band of Brothers

World War II raged from 1939 to 1945, and as its name aptly suggests, there was fighting pretty much everywhere: the Pacific, North Africa, the Middle East, the Soviet Union, France and the UK, and on and on. However, HBO's 10-part miniseries Band of Brothers -- released in 2001 -- explores one piece of one of the theaters of war through the eyes of the United States' much-celebrated Easy Company Airborne Regiment, one of the fiercest group of fighting men America has ever assembled. Band of Brothers tells their story from training camp all the way through the Nazi surrender, with stops at Normandy, Carentan, and Eindhoven, to Bastogne, Landsberg, and Berchtesgaden. It's a wonderful, much-watch series, and we're thrilled to talk about it here on KnockBack. Band of Brothers is a history lesson, yes. But it's also a story about brotherhood, valor, fear, and doing what's necessary for God and Country. Naturally, there's much to discuss.

Please Note: Beginning on Monday, January 11th, KnockBack will be moving to a Monday publishing schedule in order to make room for Defining Duke.

The Marine connection certainly makes sense. =) They would probably turn me down even if I had a PhD. =D

Colin Moriarty

Thank you so much!

Colin Moriarty

Love the series a bigger fan of the Pacific because I’m a Marine. Also to be an officer you need more than a 4 year degree I am currently undergoing the path of going from enlisted to officer and I have known many people in all branches who have degrees and were turned down in being an officer

Elias Salcedo

Thanks for finally doing this one guys, great topic/discussion.

David Kramme

Late shot on the reply, but you should check out a book called "Frontsoldaten" (Literally "front line soldier" or "grunt" in American terminology). It is comprised of excerpts from diaries and letters from German enlisted soldiers serving in WW2. Really provides an interesting outlook on the soldier experience. Regardless of the cause, wars are always fought by children.

Timothy Martin

Yeah, it's nice they limited him to two episodes.

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, we talk about that in the show!

Colin Moriarty

Awesome. I wrote the guide for that game!

Colin Moriarty

Maybe one day!

Colin Moriarty

That would be nice. =\

Colin Moriarty

That sounds awesome.

Colin Moriarty

Interesting. =)

Colin Moriarty

Heh, that's good enough.

Watched this for the first time last April. As someone who's seen every episode of Friends a dozen times, I couldn't not see Ross. I was kind of glad that he didn't turn out to be the main character because it was kind of breaking my immersion. Great listen anyway, loved the historical context provided to certain topics.

Stand out scene is where the Nazi solider from Eugene Oregon gets shot. It shows that there is degrees of “badness” with these soldiers. This is not me being a nazi sympathizer and I can’t believe I have to say it but 18 year old German boys were thrown into the war and died

Andrew

Good job on this one guys. Great show. My wife and I got the dvd box set in our last year of high school (04) and watched it over a weekend at my mums house, then we played Conflict Desertstorm co op on ps2. Fuck, good times man.

Ryan Murdoch

Excellent episode gentlemen! While not as good as Band of Brothers, will we see an episode on The Pacific? I think it would be cool to compare the Japanese and German fronts of WWII.

DrewDial

Really enjoyed this episode, i've never seen this show, so i'm excited to go back and watch it in the future with my dad. For some reason WWII shows and movies make me wish Resistance would finally come back lol

I can’t wait for the 8th Air Force series Spielberg & Hanks are working on for Apple. It’s based on the book “Masters of the Air”. Did not realize the 8th Air Force suffered more casualties in Europe than the entire Marine Corp through all of WW2.

Beau

Blithe died in 67 and the Edelweiss flower wouldve never been found on that soldier, it wouldve been found on a Gebirgsjäger and it wouldn't have been a actual flower but stitched on

Zack Fair

Most perfect series ever made. My nieces uncle is in this as well, Stephen Graham. Unfortunately I can't claim to be blood related to him 😂 my sisters daughter is though, so I'll take it.

Liam Mcnulty

What would I do without George Luz? Thanks for including my question, great discussions and I learned a few things....may be time for my 101st viewing of this show.

Gregg Kelly

=)

Colin Moriarty

No video, no. Not for now, anyway.

Colin Moriarty

Oh, I bet the true believers were not fun. =)

Colin Moriarty

Ah, you're a rare Pacific Preferer!

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, it's fittingly nostalgic to look at it through that lens.

Colin Moriarty

Heh!

Colin Moriarty

How could you be so FOOLISH?!

Colin Moriarty

Fair enough.

Colin Moriarty

Lightning

Zack Fair

Silly question. Will knockback be on video too or just ss???

Eric Hawksley

Dagan’s point about empathy for the enemy is spot on. My grandfather was an infantryman in Italy during the war, and maintained that the German enlisted men weren’t that different from himself. However, he always referred to members of the S.S. as “mean sons of bitches”.

Danny Keough

What a pleasant surprise. Been watching it the last few day and about to start the finale as we speak. Look forward to listening tonight at work. Prefer the Pacific over BOB(just a bit). Especially after reading Helmet for my Pillow and Marine! Wishing you all the best in 2021.

Will Caldwell

Edited: Listening now but couldn't agree more about the air date and impact. Grew up in North Jersey, in the shadow of the City and in High School when this came out. Episodes 1&;2 aired September 9, 2001 and got so many of us pumped up, look what brave Americans did but always in a Historical lens and then not 48 hours later the 9/11 attacks happened - Quite the emotional shift that reframed the entire follow up episodes as we may again be entering the world depicted on HBO

Rob Aitken

To add on and centralize nitpicks E Company, 506 Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. Currahee Moriarity Men!!

Rob Aitken

My Brother was in the 101st and posted a photo of the actual Easy Company after D-Day on Facebook. My grandmothers comment “which one is you?”

DeucesBruh

Just a quick correction, Donnie Wahlberg is in the series, not Mark.

Benjamin the Warped Nuclear Test Subject

I feel so foolish that I missed the Call for Question on this one as I had a great callout - Operation Market Garden is oft forgotten here in the States but in Holland it is remembered every year and Celebrated My Brother - Major John Aitken formerly of the 101rst (Airborne) Air Assault and now S3- 3RD Brigade 82nd Airborne got to take part of the 75th Anniversary with a multitude of other Nations Airborne Units including Italian Paratroopers - Alas Patreon won't allow photos but we have shots of them at the Bridge 'Too Far'

Rob Aitken

Now that the Band of Brothers episode is live, I'll stop bugging all the dorks about Avatar.

FatsBeardo

!!!

Colin Moriarty

You're welcome. =)

Colin Moriarty

Hell yes. Finally!

FatsBeardo

Man I have been waiting this episode since inception of this show. Thanks gentlemen!

Mike Moran

=)

Colin Moriarty

No; delayed indefinitely due to streaming issues.

Colin Moriarty

Freaks and Geeks next week?

Vinny Pepperoni

Cannot wait to listen to this one.
