Sacred Symbols+, Episode 76: PlayStation TV and Movie Hypotheticals

The so-called 'One Sony' initiative is a long-discussed attempt to unify all of the Japanese conglomerate's many operations into one coherent commercial vision. From music to television -- and from movies to games and beyond -- Sony has sometimes-competing interests that don't always pull in the right direction, and history is littered with the corpses of lost opportunity. That is until more recently, when PlayStation Productions was founded to leverage Sony's considerable money and prestige in TV and film to get PlayStation IP in front of more people. HBO's upcoming The Last of Us series and the long-awaited Uncharted movie are two such results of the company's efforts, but today's + is dedicated to the hypothetical: How can Sony best utilize its expansive catalog PlayStation-centric franchises to popularize them to non-gaming audiences? As it turns out, it's a simple question with seemingly endless answers.

Shoutout to Vigilante 8 for sure.

Colin Moriarty

Probably a mistake. I doubt Dustin or Ben would do that.

Colin Moriarty

=\

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, that's it.

Colin Moriarty

Twisted metal! I think Colin would really enjoy going back and playing them. The "devil" character Dustin was referring to is Minion, a recurring character (a boss in some games) who drives a tank. The Hell, Michigan joke Dustin mentioned is the final cutscene for beating the game as Minion. The premise of the series is that these drivers compete in the "Twisted Metal Tournament," hosted by Calypso, who grants the winner one wish. He ends up twisting their words against them. This series is amazing. It's campy and brutal. Each character has clearly defined goals, great design, their own car and special attack. The maps have much to explore, and the combat is downright fun. Play them in release order for full appreciation (tho imo you can skip the first). The PS3 one had interesting gameplay enhancements, but did not land the characterization and narrative of the others. Shoutout to other gems in the genre: Rogue Trip 2012, Vigilante V8, Dead in the Water

What that a mute/censor at 10:11? Audio just goes completely off. Somebody get Dustin to watch The Wire asap. Col, how quickly your opinion on watching Cats changed. All it took was Dustin saying you’d watch it together. 😄

NeO JD

Title says "Playstation TV" and there is no talk of Vita games on a big screen. I'm triggered.

Julian LP

Colin the game you are thinking of is a life is strange prequel it’s called the adventures of captain spirit or something like that

Kenneth Oms

Maybe one day.

Colin Moriarty

Maybe so. It's third-person sensibilities could have been Gears-like in multiplayer.

Colin Moriarty

Thanks. =)

Colin Moriarty

I'm not going to, but thank you for the suggestion!

Colin Moriarty

Nah.

Colin Moriarty

I wanna know how many copies this sold.

Colin Moriarty

<3

Colin Moriarty

I dunno.

Colin Moriarty

I like Defining Duke Gold. =)

Colin Moriarty

Non-existent.

Colin Moriarty

No problem. =)

Colin Moriarty

I think the Buzz idea is a good one.

Colin Moriarty

Yes, somewhat. =)

Colin Moriarty

It would be cool to revisit it one day.

Colin Moriarty

Thanks!

Colin Moriarty

Sorry. =\

Colin Moriarty

Heh.

Colin Moriarty

What.

Colin Moriarty

Would love to see another Order entry.

Kenny C

Richter Belmont had an Amiibo released when he got put in Smash Bros

Brandon Hardman

I'm usually not one to say this, but The Order could have really used a multi-player mode. I actually like that game, and I would love to see a sequel, but that will probably never happen.

Jeremy Seal

Fun episode! Neat ideas.

Bad Brad

I'm so glad that Orkney people are out there with my love for Tomba. The game is one of the few ps1 games today that aged well in terms of playability. Colin, I implore you to give Tomba 2 a real chance. It's available on Vita so you don't have to break out the PS3!

Jose Horrach

Interesting...

Robbie Agnew

No more Roman numerals!?

TheBufferPiece

Tombi! (Tombi! In pal regions, Tomba! Everywhere else) was the best! I was a bit disappinted when I downloaded the USA version from PSN and it didn’t have the PopRock intro music, but I understand it probably wouldn’t be worth it to track down and repay the license for the track. https://youtu.be/tTLPFGSctqQ

Cat Charlie

It’s been a while since I left a comment on the thread. Glad to know I still got it and made the episode. I’ll trade the mass effect remaster for a Resistance remaster... Chris use your powers for good!

James Galos

What was that game collection app? Richter?

Shortsoptional

Defining Duke X for the extra episode anyone? Got to be as creative as the marketing geniuses at MS.

Your Boi Nicky V

Tomba Gang!

Brandon Hardman

Colin, thank you for the Alundra call-out! This has always been my one of my favorite games that no one knows about. A much darker and sophisticated game than A Link to the Past. If you have a Vita or PS3 kicking around, it's the best $5.99 you'll spend on the PSN store.

Channing Cornwall

PlayStation should invest into “events” for PS+. Basically, there should be live episode airings of various shows with community ps+ member input. The key here is the shows would be available to watch maybe for all PlayStation users but leave interaction to PS+ members? Maybe a live Buzz game show and you get to play on the show just by watching. They could even have audience questions like Who Wants to be a Millionaire. There could be and InFamous show that the audience collectively makes decisions on the story through voting. Not like a twitch chat but, more like multiple choice votes. A Twisted Metal show could be all about joining teams. The teams would be able to charge up or choose what weapons the character has on hand. Maybe the winning team gets a Psn discount. These are just a few things that I could think of off the top of my head. I feel like they could really make people want to be “part of the conversation”. (By the way I hate myself for saying that) I personally don’t care much for watching shows live but, I’d bet money they would have amazing success if done properly or with enough budget.

Nick Moss

Alundra = Quantum Leap

Michael Thew

I think Dustin has a good point about the Order. I think the game has great aesthetics, lore etc. it’s a shame we will never get a sequel that can do the IP some justice

Kenneth Oms

This episode was so good its making me want to work even more on my own content this year! Great job on this episode!

Real Radec

You should've read my Bloodborne/Demons Souls anthology series to Dustin. That probably would've convinced him of the Bloodborne anime :)

Real Radec

I'm barely like 2 minutes in and heard about crunch, I hope you guys don't come out in the next Bloomberg article.

Saúl Nolasco

You're joking. But an animated show would be rad.

Carlos Fregoso

Scared Symbols the movie where we get a live action shot of the episode where Colin had Chris tied up and guns pointed at him.

Derek Waechter

Fat Princess the movie
