Sacred Symbols, Episode 133: A New Hope

When Electronic Arts signed a 10-year exclusive development and publishing deal with Disney for the Star Wars license, it had the potential to be something huge for the lucrative (but oft-under siege) companies. Eight years later, though, it's clear both sides (and EA in particular) have largely squandered the deal, with a couple of Battlefronts, a Rogue Squadron revival, and an admittedly very promising single-player game to show for it. Yet, in the bleakness comes unexpected news, for the monopoly, as it turns out, is broken. Ubisoft's Massive Entertainment -- the group behind The Division -- is hard-at-work on a Star Wars game of its own, begging a rather obvious question: What could it be? We discuss. Plus: A new Killzone seems more unlikely than ever, the team behind Wolfenstein is making a new Indiana Jones game, newly-filed trademarks from Square Enix indicate a widening of the Final Fantasy VII universe, CD Projekt offers a mea culpa over Cyberpunk 2077, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Will Colin really play Final Fantasy XIV? Is Sony spying on our PSN messages? Where's MLB: The Show 21? Should potato chips be eaten ice cold?

Comments

Interesting, although -- as you said -- not very important to me.

Colin Moriarty

Like I said, Killzone fans definitely exist!

Colin Moriarty

Maybe he has a TV that doesn't, I dunno.

Colin Moriarty

Hi Colin, Depending on how important it is to you, the PS5 doesn’t support Dolby Atmos nor Dolby Vision. You will therefore get better sound and picture quality if you stream from your LG tv. I recently upgraded to one of the new LG’s and the menus are just as snappy as on the ps5.

Anthony Masters

I would gladly take Killzone over Resistance. I’d take a Socom 3rd person with a deep character customization (gear type cosmetics, not cyberpunk style crap) & robust gunsmith. Have both single player & coop gameplay against AI. I’d be ok with an additional mp mode. And for the love of all things sacred no loot box / games of service shit or tiered loot.

Samuel Zamora

Idk what kind of 4K tv chris has that doesn’t have a YouTube app that supports 4K lol. No need to chromecast. I connect my phone to the app on my tv and can search for and watch anything very easily.

Josh Lucas

Will do! I was just replying on a thought, but not a bad idea!

Tanner Lange

Fair enough.

Colin Moriarty

STOP WRITING MULTIPLE COMMENTS!!! EDIT YOUR OLD COMMENT!!!

Colin Moriarty

Interesting point.

Colin Moriarty

<3

Colin Moriarty

Indeed.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you.

Colin Moriarty

Write into the show in the normal weekly threads!

Colin Moriarty

...

Colin Moriarty

No, but they are the same either way.

Colin Moriarty

I'm glad you're enjoying the show, and that you think it's improving! =)

Colin Moriarty

That's not how Sony said they were gonna use it!

Colin Moriarty

I don't know what any of this means!

Colin Moriarty

Stop, Chris!!!

Colin Moriarty

RIP indeed.

Colin Moriarty

That's a decision you have to make. =)

Colin Moriarty

Interestingly said.

Colin Moriarty

No. It's more fun to speculate.

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, no. LOL.

Colin Moriarty

No, I hate puzzles.

Colin Moriarty

<3

Colin Moriarty

Don't cry. =\

Colin Moriarty

Great! Glad you think the show is improving. =)

Colin Moriarty

I totally disagree with your opinion on Cyberpunk, and think it's weird that people should know not to buy a version that was sold alongside every other version. CD Projekt was manipulative, and obfuscated the state of the game where most people will play it: Console.

Colin Moriarty

Thanks! I hope I like it too.

Colin Moriarty

Possibly. I don't even know. LOL.

Colin Moriarty

Good to know.

Colin Moriarty

Heh heh. That'd be strange.

Colin Moriarty

I think we've seen enough to gauge initial interest. Otherwise, why would have they shown anything at all?

Colin Moriarty

I don't acknowledge your declination.

Colin Moriarty

It's very pretty!

Colin Moriarty

=D

Colin Moriarty

Heh heh.

Colin Moriarty

I've still never seen it... and may never!

Colin Moriarty

Thanks. =)

Colin Moriarty

You are not, my Smart TV streaming apps are, for the most part, much better looking than they are on the Series X and PS5 (though I also have an Nvidia Shield TV Pro and that thing is like the gold standard for streaming apps so that is better than my TV's built in ones).

David Taylor

A note on Indiana Jones, given that it’s Machine developing and that the teaser was in first person I believe Indy will be first person. Also considering the devs addition to grappling in Doom, they could fairly easily make that a whip. Lastly first person avoids paying the facial rights to Harrison Ford. Just a few thoughts.

BlindRiot

In defense of not using the console for streaming: I bought a 4k firestick to keep my wife off of my console and to keep my kids from putting the grubby little hands on my controller.

Chris B

Sony didn’t retweet the Indiana Jones teaser, which they would usually do...I’m with you guys on it being an exclusive.

BlindRiot

Colin your anti hype machine talk inspired me...I went through and deleted podcasts from any outlet that I realized hosted let’s plays and such with devs days after “reviewing” their games. ie Easy Allies, What’s Good Games and Kinda Funny. Furthermore it hit me like a ton of bricks that I’ve also seen these folks onstage at EA and 2k events at E3 and other events. They are the bullhorn of the Hype-machine. Stay awesome.

BlindRiot

This truly was a Star Wars A New Hope

FluffyNeko

The whole "Modern Day Rasputin" look is really working for you, Colin.

Nick Geurtsen

Hey guys! Doubt you'll read this, but the ip that I would live to see rebooted would be Spyro! Spyro it's self changed video games. (Those that don't know Insomniac was the first studio to render farther things at a lower resolution so that you could see the gems from far away) Toys for Bob, who did the reignited trilogy and Crash 4 have teased Spyro inside of Crash 4. I hope that they announce the game soon!

Tanner Lange

Pekora and Korone are 2 very popular anime girl Vtubers... not that I know anything about that...

Luke Silletta

Does a cracker or an Oreo even have an “upside down?”

Michael Schofield (making Audio Dramas)

I just have to say, maybe it’s the video but the podcast is in fantastic form right now. In the past, I’d wished you guys would more frequently vocalize your disagreements with each other and could even feel the empty space in an interesting conversation where it felt like one of you would choose to not interject. (Ironically this is feedback I avoid giving in the comments because of how much hostility I see when others present the same criticism so I understand the reasoning behind not pushing back on everything). However, in this episode I noticed several times that disagreements were politely brought up and the conversations were better off because of it. I don’t know if it’s a response to that feedback or something natural that came with doing the podcast through video but I loved the feel of this episode. Thanks so much for doing these shows, huge highlight of every week! I’ve been saying for about 6 months now that this is the golden era of CLS and it looks like that era is continuing with Last Stand Media. Love you guys!

Cannonball_Jones

One comment on the Sony Studios montage.. I've noticed that the characters that pop up on those montages within the game boot up screens are scenes and characters from the game you are playing. When you boot up Sackboy or Demon's Souls, you see scenes from Sackboy and Demon's Souls respectively. So I doubt that MLB The Show is going to show any other Sony IP on it, just exciting clips of baseball instead.

Tony Rivera

I must be the only person who’s never had an issue using Smart TV’s for streaming. I feel almost left out when this is discussed

Stephen Forgione

The issue I have with this using streaming on your console instead of TV is HDR. I like Dolby Vision way better than HDR10. I don't know if anyone else feels the same way as me, but that's the only reason I use my LG OLED app.

Jimmy Valentine

Colin how dare you forget one fantastic AAA Indiana Jones game that indeed released after Staff of Kings, which released in June 2009. Lego Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues released in November of that same year! I am shocked you forgot about it. Real talk, it’s actually a decently fun Lego game before they just started making the same game over and over.

SnipaMasta

Ya GT7 wasnt mentioned in the dates either cause it wasnt in the montage, same reason why God Of War 2 info wasnt there either.

Real Radec

Colin heads up you got some dates wrong. Project Athia was dated January 2022 and Pragmata was dated 2023. Also these dates were just for exclusive 3rd party games.

Kaleb

RIP Killzone. As a Radec (and Sir Dan) main in PS All-Stars I'll try to keep his legacy alive! P.S. great episode this week!

Real Radec

Huh well I WAS excited to play Solar Ash. I'm conflicted on one hand Zoe Quinn is just a terrible person BUT I'm normally a believer in separating the art from the artist. Also I feel like its very unfair for any team that has to work with Zoe knowing that people are going to outright boycott this game, which is arguably justifiable, just because she is attached to it. The team shouldn't suffer because of the sins of ONE person. This is a tough one for me but I think I will still play this game probably, it looked really fun based on the reveal teaser.

Empty Symbol

My hype and excitement for Cyberpunk came directly from CDPR. There was a video preview, and the behind closed doors demo they later release for everyone to see, that promised dense population, specific AI routines, a living world and countless other features that are nowhere to be seen even on the PC version of the game that's out now. I learned my lesson a long time ago not to listen to the games "journalism" hype machine, but I believed CDPR because of all the good will they built up with me from The Witcher 3. That game didn't have the best launch and needed a lot of fixing, they fixed it. Even at launch it was still the game they promised with some control issues and bugs. Cyberpunk isn't even on par with GTA V and far as it being a "living world" and doesn't even touch Red Dead Redemption 2 when it comes to independent AI routines and living world functionality. I just feel like even after all the patches and fixes 2077 still won't end up being the game they promised for so many years.

Michael Candelaria

Let's end all the Microsoft exclusive speculation and have a bet. Losers eat a can of beans on camera before their show.

Jake Z

In regards to the future of Indiana Jones, you guys (understandably) didn’t mention Shia LaBeouf’s ‘Mutt’ character in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. They clearly ended the movie in a “passing of the torch” manner with the hat nod. They’re going to completely abandon that character, right??

Corey Adams

Heads up Colin, literally 1/3 of Immortals is puzzle solving. And you hate puzzles right? Maybe I'm confusing you with someone else.

Your Boi Nicky V

Colin’s memorable turns of phrase like “sarcophagus of mediocrity” are part of what keeps me re-upping my Patreon pledge each month, haha. Also, just a quick correction: You mentioned Killzone: Mercenary was a 2006 PSP game but it actually came out in 2013 for the Vita. I just thought I should say something since people might be interested in acquiring the old Killzone games now that we seemingly have confirmation the franchise will lay dormant for the foreseeable future.

Jake H.

It’s got nothing to do with the episode but I came down with COVID last week so due to the unexpected abundance of down time I suddenly have I figured I’d sit down and finally finish Ghost of Tsushima. As a lot of people have said the game is fantastic and has completely unexpectedly been the first game to make me cry actual tears. My grandma passed away last year so the whole arc with Yuriko hit really close to home, especially that ending scene where she’s calling you by your dad’s name as you’re just sitting together. Sorry for the long post but just had to get it off my chest since I’m stuck quarantining right now. Love the show and hope everyone reading this has an awesome weekend.

Cory Mitts

I enjoy listening to the podcast every week while doing other things around the house, so I will probably continue to just use the audio format for the time being. That being said, I do agree with what y’all said about having better synchronization when using the video feed. I’ve felt like there had been a certain snappiness to y’all’s dialogue the last couple weeks that I’ve really enjoyed. Anywho, thanks for all the amazing content each and every week!

Samuel Ashley

War in general is just sad....

Zachary Parsley

I hate Star Wars.

Erk-Prime

Three things, first no one made anybody buy cyberpunk. It is clear that review copies were PCs and hi end PCs at that. If the consumer is too damn stupid to realize that, then they deserve to get a broken game. Maybe next time that person will learn. But instead we say poor babies, we will make it better, which also says to me that many of these people who bought this game knew it was broken on base systems just so they could bitch and say look at poor me. As a gamer for 35 years, I am truly embarrassed of the negativity that comes out from those on social media and most of game journalism. This has been one of my greatest enjoyments in life as a single player gamer and as an online gamer and has giving me so much throughout the years and instead of giving the greatest of our industry the spotlight, the most vocal instead need to shit all over it. Second whenever you say Swedish, all I can think is I put my bum on the Swedish. Third is my commercial idea for Indy and Microsoft. It would be like that Crash bandicoot commercial in the 90’s but it would have Indy imagined as a mascot (Think big white hands) outside Sony headquarters talking shit about uncharted.

Michael Thew

hey Col, hope you love FFXIV it’s been really great 👍 I was playing a bunch lately ,but I just got sucked into 13 sentinels Aegis rim since it was half off at the holiday sale and holy shit it’s great! Doesn’t translate the best in videos but wow I’m hooked - my favorite Vanillaware game by far. Just got a platinum after 30 hours - so satisfying.

Ryan Harvey

I think what you were originally thinking of, Colin, is an ambigram: a word written in a particular way that if you rotate it 180 degrees it'll read exactly the same. As featured in the book and film Angels and Demons.

Evan Bederman

Colin I’m here to inform you as a fellow man eater fan and platinum holder. You are not playing the game wrong. You are in fact playing the game correctly.

Adamthm

I still remember my time with FFXI... it's what got me into MMOs and I have been chasing that feeling ever since. I listen to the music on a regular basis. It was a love hate, waiting 2 hours to get a group to level, die 7 times getting to the area, and not want to leave the group by 8 am because it took so long to regain that xp!

Ryan Hayman

Watch Nolan North voice Indy.

Zachary Parsley

Not a big deal and we will get conversations in the future, but I was surprised to hear that Chris isn’t interested in Project Athia? I don’t know how one could be interested or not, we barely know anything.

TL

I decline your declining of the acronym IFR. I'd rather put hot lead through my frontal lobe than type that title again.

Paul McFerron

Maneater is one of the few games that has ray tracing on PS5 too, although the water isn't ray traced.

Jake Z

When you were telling Rush to be quiet. “That’s enough of that...god damnit.” Made me spit out coffee onto my keyboard at work. I haven’t done a spit take in a Long time. I’ll send you an invoice for the the keyboard, but thanks for the laugh on this snowy Friday. Much love from Iowa.

John

I had a feeling I wasn’t the only one afraid of mirrors

GameSimp

Absolutely agree with Chris on Avatar. I don't get it. I think it was (might not be anymore) one of the most overrated movies ever at the time of its hype. Why waste time on two more movies and a AAA video game? I'm predicting the game will be the next Avengers bomb.

Barrett Boswell

I skipped just to hear about FFXIV, to be honest Colin I wouldn’t consider it too much of an MMO. It’s very single playerish till you hit the dungeons, follows the WOW formula of solo quest to solo quest then group dungeon. So it should be a good game for you. FFXI was a true MMO like everquest which requires a lot of time, and you couldn’t do anything on your own. You HAD to make friends in that game to really progress. That’s what made it good, it was immersive as hell, you felt the danger of the world. Addictive as hell.

Kenneth Oms

Love the shows name this week
