KnockBack, Episode 154: John Wick

The term 'action movie' is sometimes used as a pejorative in order to hand-wave away bombastic and violent films that don't have some sort of deeper meaning. Yet, 2014's John Wick -- starring the seemingly-affable Keanu Reeves -- may just have redefined the term for a modern era. The titular Wick's head-first dive into the underworld seems almost unimaginably absurd at first. And maybe it is. But it's the texture underneath that truly gleams here: The shadowy characters, the thoughtful world-building, the unrivaled stuntwork. So let's take a step into the Continental, friends. Just mind the rules.

He just works like that.

Colin Moriarty

Dagan getting caught by a, in my opinion a bad fake documentary(i saw years ago on netflix), and hating Robocop, I now understand why he thinks Oscar the grouch isn't homeless.

Angel DeJesus

Yeah, it just wasn't what interested me about the movie. Very weird, I know.

Colin Moriarty

I remember this movie, for some reason.

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, I dunno. That's just where my mind went.

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, it's certainly very thorough, and cool in that regard.

Colin Moriarty

I love this movie! I wish the guys talked about the set pieces/ fight choreography more. Colin made his perspective on the action clear up front though, so it was interesting to hear the discussion more on the world building and drama.

Lucas Flatter

Hey Dagan, You need to check out dark waters. Follows a lawyers fight against a water company poising a local water supply

Aran Benton

I’m with you Col, thought Dagan was gonna be like porn started playing in the intro or something. 😄 Congrats on the pool initiative. I know how much that means to you from listening throughout the years. Happy for you. Can’t wait for your thoughts on Keanu in Cyberpunk when you eventually get around to it. I always think of Dean Winters as Tommy’s brother in Rescue Me.

NeO JD

All good haha. Great episode overall. Glad you liked the movie. Number two is not as good, but 3 is completely bonkers in a great way.

Jake Watson

Thank you. Keep your head up!

Colin Moriarty

You posted this before you even listened!

Colin Moriarty

One part of these movies I love is the actual realistic reloading for the most part. He doesn't have unlimited rounds in one magazine. I also enjoy how real Keanu moves in the movie.

Jimmy Valentine

Congrats on the pool, man! Myself having a pretty bad post-high school experience, I definitely yearn for those carefree times & happy moments as a kid.

Brandon Soto

Be seeing you, Mr. Moriarty

Thomas Connolly

Wasn't expecting such a sad episode. Hearing Colin talk about the physical things that the dead leave behind really got to me. Our dog, a Golden Retriever, has his hair all over the house basically. We're going to be finding that stuff for months, maybe years, after he dies and that just depressed the hell out of me. Oh boy

Jake Watson

We need to vote John Wick 2 and 3 through. Colin will love the world building.

Kaleb

Dagan exemplifying the modern iteration of the "war of the worlds" radio broadcast that supposedly scared listeners in 1938

James McGivern

Lance Reddick also excellent in a film called The Guest starring Dan Stevens of Downton Abbey fame. It's a cool stylized Terminator meets Drive kind of combination. Excellent soundtrack.

Kenny C

Great story at the beginning! The Bay is one of the best.

Sutter Kaine

Dude I was like yes!!! It’s an underrated gem!!

A Hind D

Oh man Dagan talking about The Bay took me back. I watched that movie with my dad and he loved it

Kenneth Oms

As soon as Dag started talking about the movie I was like “ Holy shit he’s watching The Bay!!! Amazing movie great stuff”

A Hind D

Baba Yaga time!

Will Hahn

Yes WICK!

Joey Finelli

Lol had to skip the intro about the documentary because I was eating lunch

Alan Hardee

Anthony A.
