KnockBack, Episode 155: Long Island

Long Island, New York is the nautical homeland of The Moriarty Boys, and it comes up on KnockBack constantly. Almost every one of our childhood and teenage stories, memories, and events happened there, and -- at the request of the audience -- we thought we'd take the opportunity to do a non-IP-driven episode of our show all about that peculiar strip of land in New York City's shadow. For without it, there would be no Colin and Dagan as you know us today, and in its absence, our lives would have been radically different. Why does this place matter so much to us? What do we miss the most about living there? Will we ever go back? Let's breakdown the sacred setting of Moriarty Lore.

KnockBack, Episode 155: Long Island

Comments

Turn: Washington’s Spies. See some of the heroes of that, aka Culper Ring, were from Long Island.

Michael

I really enjoyed this. I’m from East Patchogue, grew up around Bellport and taking the ferry to Ho Hum beach to Fire Island and worked at the IGA market during high school. I’ve been wanting to leave to see what it’s like elsewhere and with many people leaving it’s nice to hear a conversation of people looking back fondly of here. I had a great childhood here and that will never leave me, but I also have this desire to leave and experience other places in the US.

Alex Ryder

Hey, I saw this! That's the good stuff.

Colin Moriarty

Weird ep for me. I was more interested in the other random stuff than the actual topic of LI itself. But what do I know? I can’t say I’m from Freeport when I’m really just a hermit. Your toy talk reminded me of this Col. Don’t know if you’ve seen it. https://youtu.be/ZilFWyB8zPA

NeO JD

Sure, that could be fun. =)

Colin Moriarty

What?!

Colin Moriarty

Hey fellas, any chance you would do a Long Island episode part 2 sometime with listener comments? As a native Long Islander, it would be great to participate in this conversation with you. And for those non-natives, I'd love to hear what questions they have about our beloved home.

Joseph La Russa

Boobs or butts

Jordan Dedo

It would be pretty cool!

Colin Moriarty

I wouldn't just go there, but if you go to NYC you should definitely drive out!

Colin Moriarty

Gotta mix it up, I say!

Colin Moriarty

Thank you! <3

Colin Moriarty

We enjoy doing them, too, though there are far more limited 'options' when it comes to topic ideas in this realm.

Colin Moriarty

Awesome, I'm so pleased. Thank you for spreading the word!

Colin Moriarty

It definitely would have been different!

Colin Moriarty

I never really though about using VR to do nostalgia trips. I guess that's kind of what Earnest Cline was going for with Ready Player One. Listening to you describe going to like a video store in VR sounds amazing I cant wait!

Luke Silletta

This episode made me want to visit Long Island. On the list of travel destinations it goes. 😎

Great episode. I love what you said about diversity. As someone who grew up in a fishbowl of white people in Missouri, it doesn’t do anyone good to only grow up in 1 culture.

Robert Graham

I always love episodes like these - keep it up boys :)

GameSimp

These are definitely my favorite kinds of episodes. Something a little more personal to the boys without needing to have watched a certain movie or game to enjoy listening.

Jake De Agrela

Great episode, really made me reflect on what my hometown means to me! I just wanted to share that I introduced my friend to Knockback recently when the John Wick free feed episode went live and he loved it. Can’t wait for him to visit the back catalogue and hopefully join the community!

Ryan Harvey

Cool. I'm Italian/Irish born in East Islip. Lived in Babylon but only until age 2 when my family moved to a plain small town in Florida. I feel like my personality would have been radically different had we stayed on LI. Will be fun to hear more how it influenced you!

Douglas Morreale

Glad to hear it. =)

Colin Moriarty

These are the episodes that just do it for me! They always make me go back to simpler times

NukeDukem

Awesome! Huntington is great.

Colin Moriarty

Is it possible? I don't really know. I think the childhood we knew, like you said, is gone.

Colin Moriarty

That would be fun, but it would be ideal to be here in the mid-Atlantic.

Colin Moriarty

Man, we LOVED that show. LOVED it. We used to just sit in Dagan's car and listen.

Colin Moriarty

Wow. What a resonant episode. 1st: You should check out these cabins in Shanandoah National Park, Virginia by this company called Getaway. My wife and I just had a weekend trip in NH, it was super peaceful. https://getaway.house/dc So when you two talk of a longing to return to Long Island is that realistic today? My hometown of Nantucket is a shell of the quiet blue collar island it once was. There was something special about having all the kids in only one K-12 option. The once sparsely populated island with quiet woods has been subdivided again and again to the point of being unrecognizable. Today, it’s a playground for the super elite who fly private jet from NYC. Most sold their homes and left. The tourists think it's beautiful but it’s sad to go back to. I truly hope the same doesn’t happen to Long-Island if you intend to go back. I often long for the taste of the damp salty fog.

Bad Brad

Have you ever thought about getting a vacation home out in utah??? Colorado? That's REAL mountain land. Beautiful vacation homes for reasonable prices

Andrew Christensen

Excellent! I winder if we'll hear about your Ron & Fez listening days. I was an O&A guy myself.

TheBestMike

Damn I wish i knew this was going to happen i stayed with my stepsister's family in Huntington for a week place was beautiful!
