KnockBack, Episode 163: PlayStation Portable
Added 2021-03-22 16:01:02 +0000 UTCNintendo has long dominated gaming's lucrative handheld scene, vanquishing foes who dared enter the space, one after another, from Atari to SEGA to SNK. But then 2004 rolled around. It was late in that year (and into the next) that Sony launched PlayStation Portable, or PSP, the only non-Nintendo handheld in the history of the industry to... well... hold its own against its arch-rival in an ecosystem it had to scratch, claw, and bite its way into. Yet, PSP's legacy is a mixed one, remembered as much as a fabulous on-the-go emulator as it was a unique proving ground for some of Sony's biggest IP. Discontinued in 2014, our memories of PSP are growing dimmer by the year. So let's put some thoughts on the record, and let's do so with a special guest: MrMattyPlays, who holds PlayStation Portable near-and-dear to his heart.

Yeah, I had more PSP3000's than any other model of PSP. I had 1 PSP 1000, that I gave to my brother, a PSP2000 (which is actually the best of the 3 initial psp's) that I ultimately gave to my step brother, and 3 PSP 3000's. One I gave to the wife, one that my brother in law borrowed but lost, then the one I bought years later and still have. I actually really like the PSP Go, I didn't buy it until it was cheap though, that initial $250 price was super steep, so I grabbed it at $170 on black friday. By then I had already repurchased about half my PSP games digitally when they were on sale. The case that the PSP Go had could be reversed to make it easier to hold, so the small size was mostly a positive when it was all folded up, and the battery life was about the same as the 2000 with a standard battery. The PSP Go was kind of an early prototype for the switch, because you could drop it on the dock and hook it up to the TV. Unfortunately, because they didn't think it through, it didn't instantly output to the TV when plugged in, and it didn't scale up to HD sizes, but instead had a PSP resolution box on the 720p screen, which killed a lot of its usefulness. The PSP2000 and PSP3000 could actually run for 9 hours with the extended battery kit, so it was a really good device for long trips. I would take 2 extended batteries with me on business trips.

2021-03-24 15:45:48 +0000 UTCI just got a PSP 3000, which I didn't know that I got the Japanese version when I bought it, but it's Region free so no worries. The color is a beautiful yellow gold and it's fantastic quality but right now the only games I got was FF7 Crisis Core and Heroine Dream. So now I need to expand that library before prices skyrocket. And it's hard to get them digital because the store on the console was moved to the website, which is gone now, and I need to use the vita and ps3 to buy games.

Most people don’t care about Sony’s 1st or 3rd party games on the go, as you mentioned majority of PSP owners bought it to put roms on it. And now xCloud with playing Xbox games on the go, it’s time to let go of the dream of Sony making another one. But they SHOULD take another crack at it.

Dragonball Z Tenkaichi Tag Team and Tony Hawk Underground 2 Remix were dope and you can’t get them on the online store bc copyright stuff I assume. Sin City is the only movie UMD I have. One thing that’s cool is that PSP and Vita can play multiplayer on psp games like Dissidia Final Fantasy, Battlefront, and Soul Calibur

I remember getting my Series 1000/Phat PSP, My Girlfriend (at the time) ordered it from Japan for me, I used it so much for games, Films/TV, and comics (Not the actual comic service on it, just copied scans downloaded from my PC), and the software to convert video to the right format was such a pain to use! I hacked it and mainly used it for emulators (and MarioMachism) for an age before leaving it in my pocket with a bar of chocolate (JNCO style trousers, so large pockets). Over the years I bought another Phat, a Series 2000/Slim, and a Go. I've still got the Phat and the Slim, but I regret selling the Go, it was a really nice little machine.

2021-03-22 22:23:00 +0000 UTCThe PSP was my first sony console I had at launch. One of my favorite pictures of me as a kid was me beaming at the camera all doe-eyed with my PSP rocking Lumines! Loved that guy little :_). Lumines, and Untold Legends were awesome launch titles. I also went from Gameboy advance to the PSP and my mind was fucking blown. This was the first place I played games online too! Metal Gear Solid online was a blast! My childhood friend helped me hack my psp too and playing all my old gameboy advance games with emulation and save states. i felt like I was hacking the planet!

About a month ago now I did to my Vita what we were all doing to our PSPs back in the day, and now it's extra awesome with having three console libraries and emulation. The hardest part of this now may just be actually getting a Vita for a decent price.

My parents were going through a divorce and weren't speaking at the time, it was our last Christmas all together. My mother got me the battlefront edition and I was so excited I almost cried, it was the one I had put on my Christmas list, but I also got the Daxter version from my father and I had to choose one! I went with Star Wars (of course), but I'll never forget how awkward and strange that was.
