Sacred Symbols, Episode 143: Pirates of the PSN

Recent (still unsubstantiated) rumors indicate Sony may be considering a full shutdown of its digital stores for PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 3, and -- perhaps most tragically -- PlayStation Vita. While we don't yet know what Sony's plans are (if any!), such a possibility raises a lot of interesting philosophical and practical questions, particularly this one: Who's watching out for the digital-only games that may be lost to history? Today, let's delve deep into the PSN, the digital ecosystem more widely, and the industry's history of piracy-for-good, as well as rampant piracy-for-piracy's-sake. Right or wrong, is it the only way we'll have access to many games in the future? Plus: News! Housemarque's Returnal has gone gold, a Ghost of Tsushima film is in the early stages, Media Molecule's Studio Director is receiving a very prestigious award, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! What did we think about Six Days in Fallujah's gameplay reveal, and the new fiasco(s) that came about as a result? Where are the PlayStation 5 firmware updates? Should Sony seek a partnership with Google's Stadia? Will Colin ever one time comprehend a technical question?

Note: Video will be up later today.

Indeed, though the physical market is going to be affected.

Colin Moriarty

I'd love for them to do it, but they won't.

Colin Moriarty

Indeed.

Colin Moriarty

Indeed...

Colin Moriarty

I just don't know why you'd give even basic features to people if only some used them.

Colin Moriarty

I think best case Sony incorporates "top" PS3 games into shitty PSNow and even then I'm sure there will be some games that get overlooked. I just got a PS3 and I have a feeling they will start spiking somewhat in price as well as some physical copies of games. Get in before it's too late!

Michael Buffill

Massive discounts on PSN would be amazing. Microsoft did something kind of similar. Some rights in Forza Motorsport 6 were expiring. The $99 version with all DLC was like $5 before it was removed from the store.

Robert F Friemering

Got an email stating they are in fact closing the psp, ps3 stores on July 2nd and vita store on August 27th. At least you will be able to download the things you bought.

Wayde

Colin calling out the hypocrisy in games media with Kotaku about Fallujah and COD WWII was fucking GOLD!! Called them out on their bullshit!! I was so jacked and laughing. This is why I love my boy Colin. True patriot.

BakerShop

This week will be very interesting for PlayStation. Will they address Game Pass, or PS+ April, or PSP/PS3/PSvita store closing, or Backwards Compatibility?

Marvinarviin

I get that maybe Folders weren't the that popular but I'd still like to see that feature patched into a PS5 update. I've been lucky to get the system two weeks ago today and it really feels weird to not be able to make a separate folder. On PS4 I had a folder for all my Mega Man and Inti Creates and similar retro games. Another one for Open-World games and another for my primary gaming Backlog. It really helped keep all my games organized so I hope they bring this option back.

Dave Ramos

I am.

Colin Moriarty

Indeed.

Colin Moriarty

Thanks for listening!

Colin Moriarty

Well, of course. LOL.

Colin Moriarty

That's all Dustin!

Colin Moriarty

As I said in the other thread, I was under the assumption Call of Duty was smaller on the new machines.

Colin Moriarty

They have to solve the problem, 100%.

Colin Moriarty

I don't disagree with you in premise; I just think it's fairly unreasonable to expect that people are going to accept not having access to X, Y, or Z because the powers-that-be refuse to sell them. It's their right to not sell them -- and piracy is illegal, straight-up -- but the best and most effective way to solve all of this is to just make games easily purchasable on universal platforms in perpetuity. Xbox is the only console manufacturer essentially dedicated to this philosophy, and it's why we (at Lillymo) are paying a lot more attention to them now. Because we know that, unlike the Vita versions of our four games, when we release a game on Xbox One, they're gonna actually leave it there.

Colin Moriarty

Are you still having issues? DM if so!

Colin Moriarty

I'm definitely gonna. =)

Colin Moriarty

I don't think that's true, but I need to read more about it. IO themselves wrote on their website that they reclaimed the IP. I think this is a licensing deal, but I haven't read further.

Colin Moriarty

Dustin is doing good work!

Colin Moriarty

Someone in the other thread said so, too. Just write in and we'll correct it.

Colin Moriarty

It's a good parable, for sure.

Colin Moriarty

I'm definitely not a moral or philosophical endorser of what you're talking about. But I think having Steam-like open demo periods for all games would eliminate a lot of that.

Colin Moriarty

Thanks. =)

Colin Moriarty

Interesting. I'll check out that possibility.

Colin Moriarty

As I said above, I shall investigate!

Colin Moriarty

No, it's a new filing.

Colin Moriarty

I gotta investigate that.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

!!!

Colin Moriarty

You're smart to.

Colin Moriarty

Enjoy.

Colin Moriarty

=)

Colin Moriarty

Thank you for your support!

Colin Moriarty

Let’s not forget, Colin is the guy that rips ass at the urinal

Oliver Johnson

Holy moly, Chris dredged up a memory of people playing Bush Shootout in my school computer lab way back in the day. We are the same age so I feel like perhaps this was a universal shared experience for our generation, lol.

Jake H.

I don't think I've ever seen such a beautiful thumbnail! Great episode like always guys

Harry Stone

Hey Colin! If you don’t download you Spider-Man save on the ps5 version the trophies won’t pop and you can earn the platinum on your own again! I did it that way!

love the thumbnail

Call of Duty is the hard drive at this point.

TROTMAC96

Colin: "Games are getting smaller." Call of Duty: "Am I a joke to you?"

Lee Bull

Dude same. And I’m pretty sure that’s what the developers were going for.

Brandon Soto

Sony needs to stop ignoring their backwards compatibility problem. Really tired of the cell processor & “Just play new games” excuses. Imagine if you could only stream 360 games. People would be in Microsoft’s ass until they changed it.

Brandon Soto

I know you’re speaking to the guys. Just giving my unwanted opinion, but I think some of the skepticism is kinda justified. How many video game properties have actually been good? A hand full? It seems like Sony is just throwing stuff out there just to say they are making a film or a TV show on their IP. I love video games and I love film. I’m deeply committed to both industries. In my opinion if Sony is going to produce films or TV shows with their IP, they absolutely need to do a better job at producing these products. I understand you probably don’t care about my point of view. Again it’s just my 2 cents.

D'Ante Almo

I’m buying six days in fallujah. I had no clue about this games existence until the outrage. 😂😂😂 fuck it, I’m buying it.

D'Ante Almo

I'm sorry I'm usually positive in these post but your guys talk about video game movies was so negative and narrow minded. It really annoyed me. Specifically when you guys joked about a dark souls or demon souls netflix show. Obviously an every day person wouldn't pick up that game but Jesus guys there are how many playstation players? Over 100 million. And how much does dark souls sell? There are plenty of gamers like me who have always been interested but never really played them because the story is so obtuse. But after a movie that focuses only on the story I might be more inclined to get into the games. Same goes for ghost of tsushima. You pointed it out yourself that it only sold just over 6 million copies yet there are how many playstation 4s? Like come on you guys know this stuff you just want to be negative about all of it because it's something that you all don't like. Forget marketing to people who don't play games. These movies and shows can be great to market to gamers who haven't picked up these titles. Sorry for the long rant. I still love you all. Just really frustrated me.

Andrew Arana

I strongly disagree with the opinions on pirating games. There’s this sense of entitlement that comes from making the arguments Chris and Dustin made. There is no reason to download SSB Melee instead of purchasing it, the game sold millions of copies and is readily available. Trying to jump through hoops and justify it by saying Nintendo wouldn’t get any money for it is besides the point. We’re not entitled to play games from previous generations for free because they are no longer sold as new.

Andy Miller

Is anyone else trying to download this in Chrome on a PC and getting the episode title 1.mp3?

LaFlex

You'd better play Into the Nexus, Colin! It's really good! Also, Super Stardust was one of the first downloadable games I fell in love with and there's a really cool PSVR version of it now for those interested.

Jake Z

Hey Colin figured you might have some insight to it, but apparently Square-Enix still owns Hitman and only licensed it out to IO? This came from the fine print of that new mobile Hitman game that came out I think, but I figured I would ask if you would know anything about that. Great episode overall btw

Real Radec

What a beauty of a thumbnail

Alex Bolton

Hey Colin, just so you’re aware CDL switched from using PlayStation consoles to PC at the start of this current season in Cold War. Not sure if this had any relation to the layoffs at Activision or their marketing deal with Sony.

Michael Galletti

Right with Dustin on the Paper Mario problem

GameSimp

I pirate games I know I’m not gonna like but want to try them anyways without spending $90 where I live. Most recently was The Medium. Played 1-2 hours and then deleted it and morally I feel okay with that. I also remember pirating life is strange and after the first episode I went and bought it so for me it can go both ways. I always try to support the devs when I can though which is 95% of the time. I used to rent games before I bought them if I was really unsure if I’d enjoy them but that’s no longer a thing I can do so in some cases I kind of treat it the same way.

Adam

Damn, that's a really hurtful comment. Don't get me wrong, you weren't rude or mean at all, and I understand that if you have feedback, you gotta give it honestly. But if I were Dustin and I read this, it would make me REALLY sad. I don't know why, but I kinda hope Colin deletes this before Dustin sees it (even though again, you didn't do anything "wrong" at all).

Dave Carsley

Great pic for Sacred Symbols, lol man that's great.

Jonathan Cortez

Love you Dustin but slowly becoming a believer of less Dustin is better Dustin. Like a once a month or every other month spot. Guess my ears are just missing the scared duo of Colin and Chris. Keep kicking ass on twitch Dustin!

larry Seitz

Hey Colin! Just wanted to comment regarding Stardew Valley on the Vita. My wife got her first vita yesterday and we were playing Stardew Valley on it. The developer has not updated the PS Vita version for a while and it is behind on content and stability patches. I've personally found the best way to play Stardew Valley on vita is to use the PS4 remote play option as you get the best of both worlds if your internet connection is good. Regardless of how you choose to play, love to hear Stardew Valley covered on Sacred Symbols. Have a great weekend!

Jordan Avery

Funny you mention The Escapist. I just started reading them bc I saw Marty Sliva is a writer there now. If y’all are on good terms, I would love having Marty on the show. Other than Colin, Marty was my favorite person on Beyond back in the day

Maxx Lazos

I thought that was just an update of the same patent from 2012?

Dav9834

I know, right?!? I had the lotion and tissue ready to go! WTF!!

Dave Carsley

Where's the video, babes?

Nicholas

Oooo if you're having Nick on, I hope Marty Sliva can come on at some point. His appearances on Beyond with yall were some of the best. Miss that guy.

Tyler Cumerford

Just have to add to the commentary. knock back is a great show

Raymond keys
