Sacred Symbols+, Episode 88: PSN, CD Projekt, Corporate Consolidation, and Defamation!

Welcome Richard "Rick" Hoeg back to the show for an unprecedented third time, as we jump into actual and could-be legal issues littering our industry. Such as: What's happening with the PlayStation Store on PS3, PSP, and Vita, what's the difference between owning a game versus a license, and what's Sony's liability (if any) once the stores go down? Speaking of broken things, CD Projekt released a very broken Cyberpunk 2077 into the world three-plus months ago, and they're being sued by their own shareholders, with possibilities percolating of a class-action suit, too. What's happening over in Poland? Also, if you haven't noticed, we've entered the most substantial period of corporate consolidation in the nearly five decades video games have even existed. A lot of the money is coming from Communist China, the Saudi royal family, and other unsavory sources. Should we be worried? And will the consolidation ever end? Finally -- like a cherry on top -- we talk about the issue of libel and defamation in our industry. People are destroying the reputations of others, often with unfounded and clearly injurious statements. And they know exactly what they're doing. Is there any legal recourse for the victims of such campaigns? Strap in! It's time to get nerdy.

Just bought habroxia 2 for $112 because I missed the preorders oh well the game is worth it physical on vita

Hose A Contra Razz

I do! Which is why I suggested doing more, narrower episodes focused on one topic instead of multiple topics. If Hoeg is so popular, you could make him a regular contributor to LSM to ensure he's available for more frequent appearances.

Joseph La Russa

Great episode. I do hope mailbag episodes dont dissapear off ss+ in lieu of just guest episodes though.

Piston Pants

I appreciate it. =)

Colin Moriarty

Thank you. <3

Colin Moriarty

Thank you for your kind words.

Colin Moriarty

It's bad, for sure.

Colin Moriarty

I really don't want to keep my guests beyond an hour (or maybe 90 minutes), particularly a man who makes hundreds of dollars an hour. Ya know?

Colin Moriarty

Great episode, gentlemen! I do have to say, I feel like Colin rushes these episodes. As a lawyer, these topics are so much deeper than an episode that's less than an hour allows, especially when they're trying to cover 4 important topics. I would request either longer episodes or give a whole hour to a single subject and bring Hoeg back more often. I believe the interview format works well because a lay person asking questions to gain understanding is a very different from Hoeg's solo videos explaining things to the best of his ability; lawyers don't always know what concepts non-attorneys are familiar or unfamiliar with, so this can be more focused by having Colin's guiding questions. Just my thoughts.

Joseph La Russa

Corporate consolidation is worse than ever and is happening across a lot of industries; killing small competitors, and dominating the market. Not much of a "free market" if you ask me.

Ben Rawding

Could listen to you two talk for hours, so insightful.

Another exquisite episode, Colin! Really insightful and very entertaining. Thank you!

Gabriel (sangerardino)

These episodes are S tier.

Jonathan Gonzalez

I really like plus episodes with guests, it's my favorite content apart from the main show. I hope they can keep coming.

Keep Hoeg coming back the man adds so much to the conversation and his knowledge is worth its weight in gold! Refreshing to hear such calm discussion on current events in gaming.

James Galos

Another excellent episode, I feel...... 2% smarter.

Kenny C

I will be super curious to see one day if these journalists/activist types who's attitude of "freedom of speech doesnt mean freedom of consequences" is what puts the final nail in their coffin

Jeffrey Watts

Exactly that.

Fantastic show! Richard is so knowledgeable. I’m so happy you brought him into our lives on LSM. Thank you for everything Colin.

Matthew Major

The biggest issue that people like myself who buy physical media primarily over digital is there is no guarantee that you will have access to that game years down the line. With a physical copy you have the actual physical code. Digital your beholden to another party to be able to access that. There are plenty of examples of games which if you bought digitally you no longer have access to. This will not change unless disc games no longer have the game on the disc and it is just a digital download anyways

Wayde

We can only do it with your support! Thank you.

Colin Moriarty

Thanks for listening. =)

Colin Moriarty

Colin this is such fantastic content. No one else covers these topics like you and Richard do thank you so much.

Josef Barker

My favorite guest. Thanks as always boys!
