Sacred Symbols, Episode 148: The Model of Perfect Health

PlayStation is booming. Recent financial results from Sony prove it, countervailing the prevailing wisdom about the brand's shortcomings. The reality is stark: PlayStation 5 is the fastest-selling home console of all-time so far, even under severe supply constraints. Meanwhile, more games have now been sold for PlayStation 4 than any gaming hardware, ever, and PlayStation made nearly twice as much in revenue as rival Xbox over the last fiscal year. They're very much in the black, with billions in profit to show for it. So what does this all mean? Well... it means we need to give Sony a lot more credit than we've been providing in recent weeks, so let's remedy that. Let's also cover the other news, as it presents itself. Ideas for The Last of Us III are percolating at Naughty Dog, PS5 launch game Godfall looks like it's getting a PS4 port, old LittleBigPlanet games have apparently been in a non-functioning state for quite some time now, Sony filed new trademarks for PlayStation Home and Soho Engine, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Is the key to accepting a $70 price point the launch functionality (or lack thereof) of modern games? Can you host industry events, galas, and the like, and be an objective critic? Has a game ever been so good that it's ruined everything else for you? Is Colin lying about his lack of a sweet tooth?

You can be apart of a sponsored event, video, etc, and not be influenced in a substantial way. Whether you feel comfortable with it is really besides the point. It is impossible to not be bias in some way or form, because of emotion and life experiences. It's all about the audience, and your message. Ultimately it's up to the viewer of the content to either trust you or not. I think if anyone could be trusted with E3, Greg is a good bet.

Joseph Cerini

Yessssss!

Owen

Zero Hedge is good.

Nicholai

I'm kinda needing a story, and I feel like that might be a good direction for me to go in.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you. We have to be true to ourselves and our opinions, first and foremost. It's the gas that allows us to cook this fire. =)

Colin Moriarty

Dustin, take note!

Colin Moriarty

It's very interesting. Receiving some DMs from people in the space giving me some interesting insight, since I've brought it up.

Colin Moriarty

I don’t get sucked back into games because of how good they were, as I don’t replay games often (almost never), but there are times I play a game so good that I have trouble playing new ones because they just aren’t as good. I recently had this with 13 sentinels. The story is just so damn good that all other story based games just haven’t been catching me. So instead I switch genres I’ve been playing a lot of arcade games like habroxia, super stardust delta etc.

Owen

I think you guys spoke a lot to what makes this show so special when talking about how things were at Kinda Funny and IGN. You guys all speak from such a genuine place and it’s so honest that even when I disagree I can totally respect your opinions. I’ve always found this company to be inspiring because it shows that if you do what is truly honest to yourself there is the potential for your greatest success.

Oliver Johnson

Chris' audio has a rather faint high-pitched whine in the background :) (and no I don't mean his voice)

Re: the shipping containers discussion, I actually remember GamersNexus talking about this a few months ago with regards to how many PC components are being backordered because for example, companies making stuff like power supplies have a TON of inventory, but it's literally cheaper for them to manufacture them and eat the cost letting them sit in warehouses in China than it is to ship them currently. So they're just kind of sitting around waiting for these prices to normalize.

Travis Stockton

I mean, they're two different things. I own part of a studio and make games there; I'm also a critic. The only conflict of interest is with my own games. If I did an event for Square Enix, my conflict of interest with be with Square Enix games. Apples and oranges.

Colin Moriarty

My assumption is that Sony can rather easily track shipments to the unit sold simply by way of barcode scanning. And so they know when things are shipped, stocked, and sold.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you. <3

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, he's a very nice man.

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, that's what I was thinking.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you for letting us know.

Colin Moriarty

We have our rhythms, now.

Colin Moriarty

I'm not doing that!

Colin Moriarty

I wouldn't know one way or another.

Colin Moriarty

Ah, yeah. Nothing to talk about, really. KnockBack will take care of that.

Colin Moriarty

Soon!

Colin Moriarty

<3

Colin Moriarty

Interesting insight. Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

Thank you. <3

Colin Moriarty

My dad is such a nerd for that shit.

Colin Moriarty

Yes.

Colin Moriarty

Indeed.

Colin Moriarty

You're welcome.

Colin Moriarty

I don't care; he could believe that, and that's his right.

Colin Moriarty

Hate, hate, hate.

Colin Moriarty

I'd love any prequel content in that universe more than moving forward.

Colin Moriarty

I can't know all sources, so.

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, that's the one.

Colin Moriarty

I see.

Colin Moriarty

That's right.

Colin Moriarty

Everyone shut up.

Colin Moriarty

Hmmm.

Colin Moriarty

Good company.

Colin Moriarty

Welcome to the club.

Colin Moriarty

=)

Colin Moriarty

Yes.

Colin Moriarty

Very weird.

Colin Moriarty

No way, it was definitely the Wii. It was being scalped more than a year after launch

Cash

I went to a few stores to enquire about stock of both PS5 and SX in my local town and its was basically just "go online we have no idea when we will get stock in store" Then I went to CEX which is the UKs defacto used/2nd hand game/electronics seller and they had PS5s and SX for sale but at a considerable mark up in price. Obviously this is my own experience but I dont think it would be a stretch to say these are some of the most scalped products in history. I mean just look on ebay.

Craig Mcguire

Should probably save this for the next challenge Colin but I have a question about your quote "I don't think you can be necessarily a critic, and then work in the industry at the same time!" How is this different from you owning part of, and writing for lillymo Games? It feels the same to me as Charlie Brooker being creator and co-showrunner of A TV series (Black Mirror) whilst also having a show taking swipes at the current weeks TV (Screenwipe) Obviously people are free to take whichever jobs they are offered, but is the answer here people should always be upfront about possible conflicts of interest. Interested to hear your thoughts.

James Schubert

So here is where I’m continuously confused and I gots to bring it up up to CC&D. If Sony has sold more PS5’s than PS4’s in the window of time since its release. I just don’t get it. Are they simply tracking what was sold or how many users are plugging in the machine and playing it? There is no drought of PS5’s online that are priced at $600-$1000 but who’s paying that much for them? No one in know has a PS5. I can’t recall but was this the same with PS4 and because I had one? Thoughts?

Nick Goblirsch

Love you, Colin. Never written in, never tweeted at you, but I've listened for as long as I can remember. And I'll support you till the day I die. Last Stand for Life ❤

Hidari Shotaro

Outside of Halo its really a stretch to suggest other projects are being severely mismanaged especially Hellblade 2, the creative director hasn't changed hes one of the studios founders and the new director position is a combat designer who was the lead on Bleeding Edge which announced they were dropping support in January, she's obviously just been moved over and been there 11 years. The Everwild comment while funny is probably the case for a lot of games in early to mid development, you probably just dont say it about a game just revealed. Maybe Colin can dig more about the Drew Murray situation but having read his comments on twitter and his subsequent move to a less responsible role at Insomniac doesn't really scream "mismanagement" and more in line with what he announced which was it was for personal reasons Also follow Drew on twitter he seems like genuinely cool guy.

Craig Mcguire

Btw, it's MVP baseball 2005! Not RBI

Anthony J Sanchez

I drink water with everything because I have a very weak stomach. Plus, it allows me to enjoy the taste of my actual meal. Also, I don't like carbonation, so I would never drink pop.

Anthony J Sanchez

FYI Chris, if you hold the PS button on the Dualsense down for a few seconds it'll turn off.

Campbell Parker

Colin, you can also use your knuckles to track months with 31 days. Starting on your ring finger, each knuckle is a month with 31 days and each in between has less than 31. Hit the pinky twice for July and August.

Kevin Sullivan

Lol, Greg Miller. He's more of a marketing persona, like Kevin Butler, at this point than an analyst.

Your Boi Nicky V

You didn’t tell us what you were playing, Col’. More Outriders while you wait for Returnal, I’m assuming? Naughty Dog will only make Uncharted & The Last of Us for the rest of our lives. And that sucks. Miss you on Kinda Funny, but you’re much bigger and better than ever. Keep grinding man.

Brandon Soto

Returnal is fucking amazing. Can't wait to see what you all think

Wayde

Sony owns insomniac right? Technically 1st. party

Michael Candelaria

Guys, help me out here. I'm in an argument with an employee of Insomniac, who very indignantly says that Returnal is a FIRST party game, and second party doesn't even exist. It never existed, he says (https://twitter.com/JamesStevenson/status/1388300054021033984?s=20). Am I fuckin crazy? If there was no such thing as second party, then why is there a FIRST and a THIRD?

Nick Jones

I was gonna say, everyone needs to play Brothers. One of best indie experiences. It's short and heartfelt.

JD

Fares has made 3 games, Brothers : A Tale of Two Sons was the first and it was also really good and had a great story. Great episode guys, keep it up.

Michael Candelaria

Thanks so much for answering my question, bois. Much love from the UK >3

Hey Colin, Writing in to elaborate on the shipping container situation you touched on this week. I work in supply chain for a fastener distributor, our biggest customer is Tesla. We do a majority of our business overseas in Taiwan, which is where the worlds largest concentration of manufacturers are for fasteners (i.e. screws, nuts, washers, small fasteners for electronics etc) and we use, no doubt, some of the same places that Sony would probably be using for PS5 components. There are MASSIVE logistical issue at the moments coming from overseas. There are delays in shipping vessels departing from overseas ports, and being unloaded once they are received to port elsewhere. There is a major shortage of containers causing the cost of shipping to skyrocket. A lot of larger assembled products (electronics, cars, etc) hit bottlenecks with fasteners, since delays in these components from overseas cause production to be halted since they don't have the specific components and fasteners to hold the damn things together. Normally, a large production order from overseas (via sea freight) is quoted at around 24 weeks of Lead Time, but right now, in our business (probably some crossover) we are seeing 40-45+ week lead times which is devastating. Just some random insight from a supply chain nerd.

John

Your guys show being more in tune with what your preferences are is what makes you guys the best. Other outlets try to keep up with everything and in turn their content is shallow. You guys dig in deep and leave no meat on the bone.

Michael Buffill

I really like lord of the rings, but I would rather die then try to read the simarillion again. Mad respect people that can get through that shit.

Simon Payne

No please let us forget lol

Michael Buffill

Pepsi gang step up!

PuppiesOnParade

alternative ending to Drakengard 3, ftfy

LaFlex

I think you get better quality reporting and discussion on games if you let people play what they enjoy and with Colin, Chris and Dustin you get a really good section of most games covered

Zack Fair

There’s a YouTuber named Clemps that does a good video series connecting drakengard to Nier. I would love to see drakengard 1 remade as it’s a very dark game with an interesting story. All you really need to know for Nier though is that it’s based on an alternative ending to drakengard 1. That’s pretty much it.

Kenneth Oms

Thank you for the Playa Haters Ball reference.

Dennis Fox

Colin whats your thoughts on Jeff Grubb giving Returnal a 3/5 or if you're equating it outta a 100 a 60 score?

Zack Fair

Hahaha hate hate hate. The player haters ball was the best. You guys forgot Resident Evil Outbreak 1 and 2. That was resident evils first attempt at online and it was during the ps2 era. That is the kind of multiplayer experience people want but for some reason they keep doing this player versus player bullshit

Kenneth Oms

Colin, You want Last of Us to explore the 20 year time period prior to the first game. Nearly all trilogies ever made delve into a reveal of a character’s past. This rule is expressed in the film Scream 3. Take for instance, Uncharted 3 where we play as young Drake. Neil Druckmann and Haley Gross have expressed a desire to tell the story of Ellie’s mother—I believe this was in the Kinda Funny developer discussion but I could be mistaken. Regardless, Last of Us is no stranger to switching POVs or moving around in time. While this may not be the exact frame you want displayed, a look into the past is definitely something you can guarantee will be shown. In my mind, three stories are available for telling: Ellie, Abby, and Ellie’s mother. We have no knowledge of Ellie’s biological father but we have the story of her surrogate father. Majority of trilogies have the main character delving into their past for a new revelation. In essence, the framework is laid out for Ellie to go on a journey of self-discovery by the end of Last of Us 2. She lost her father and her role as a mother/parent. Perhaps now is the time to go back and learn of her own mother. But what do I know... Apologies for the word vomit, Cheers man!

Vonoran

Correction. Returnal is the 3rd PS5 exlcusive...dont forget Destruction AllStars

Real Radec

Mystic was actually reporting on the Little Big Planet servers about a month ago before this ign article

Sumojoe118

My Dad’s mom did the name run-through with him since he was the youngest of four. My parents do the same thing, they’d call me my older brother before my name. Sometimes my dad will do “Paul George Ringo”for fun. Also as a small correction, the term is “Irish Twins” when it’s siblings born in the same year/nine months apart

Stephen Forgione

I guess I'm the anti-Colin, because I love sweets but can't stand milkshakes.

TROTMAC96

The sheer virility on display here just blows my mind.

Max Stahl

I saw that Spider-Man correction, and I should've corrected it then, but I thought you would've. Miles Morales was $50, not $40.

Jake Z

Jason Schreirer is a clown, pass it on

The Lizard King

Got blocked by Screier today for a very tame tweet. Welcome to the Club, I guess.

Michael Welter

Earned that Schreier block got a new SS! What a great day! 😂✌️

Remington James

Best part of Friday's!.... until I get home and play Returnal 😜

Mitch Orobko

The Champ is here.

Dennis Johnson

Why does Sony decide to do a State of Play right before Returnal comes out? Why not wait a week, and let Returnal have its week.
