KnockBack, Episode 170: Training Day

The important thing to remember about the 2001 film Training Day is the context in which it was filmed and released. The decade of the '90s were scattered with serious issues of police brutality, and the Los Angeles Police Department was at the center of the storm. Thus, Denzel Washington's and Ethan Hawke's foray into the Southern California underworld -- and the seriously crooked behavior by Washington and his cop colleagues -- can really be interpreted as something greater: A glimpse into a specific place and time where a story like this not only made a lot of sense, but was almost expected. The backdealing, the violence, the betrayal... it's all here in Training Day, one of the most tense movies perhaps ever made. And hey, just remember: Stay off of the rover.

Dagan and I have the same favorite part. Love when Alonzo says " Your in the office baby."

Colin, I appreciate that you're into Curren$y. It caught me off guard when you mentioned it before on another pod. Have you listened to his tapes and other albums? I found him through the Stoned Immaculate but would honestly not keep that project near my favorites of his honestly. He was also my first concert. Really had to air out the venue afterwards✈️

You guys make it a point to say Alonzo planned on killing Jake. I got the impression that killing Jake was only the fallback plan in case he didn’t join Alonzo’s crew. The plan was always to frame Jake, but I’m not sure if that was only if he refused. When they seize Roger’s 4 mil, Alonzo keeps 1 mil for him and the gang. I figure he could’ve taken more of it if he needed to but his share alone was enough to pay the Russians. At one point Alonzo even mentions that Jake is a leader unlike the rest of his crew and that he reminds him of a young Alonzo. He could’ve been gassing him up but I think Alonzo had planned to move up in the ranks once he got Jake to become his stand-in. He mentions something like this when telling Jake that his goody goody shit doesn’t carry weight at his level.

"The game's not checkers its Chess son!" I always loved that line.

The clothing brand "Enyce" I believe is pronounced "eh-knee-che". I remember because I had a few of those shirts when I was in high school haha

Training Day is super iconic in the black community. Denzel Washington definitely outshines everybody else in this film. It’s hilarious when he goes eat with the 3 wise men and one tells him the story about a guy getting off by licking peanut butter from his crotch. 😂

Interesting. =)

Hey Colin. I’m a personal trainer. That "natural" athleticism you’re talking about comes down to a genetic disposition towards fast twitch dominant muscles. We’re all born with a certain ratio of fast and slow twitch muscles, which also have a certain connection to the nervous system. Strong CNS (central nervous system) + predisposed fast twitch dominance = natural athletic ability. Of course you can also train a certain way to be more fast twitch dominant. Anyway, love the show!! Cheers.
