Sacred Symbols+, Episode 94: Doing the Work (with Ryan McCaffrey)

For years, Ryan and I (Colin!) worked side-by-side at IGN, him on Xbox and me on PlayStation. We became fast friends during our time as coworkers, and Ryan ended up being one of my closest connections and confidants in the entire industry. Unfortunate, then, that we haven't spoken on a podcast in years. Until now! I invited Ryan onto + to talk about all sorts of things: His career, working at IGN, the (seeming?) politicization of the IGN and the industry as a whole, a few pieces of outlet drama, the ongoing saga between PlayStation and Xbox, and much more. Long-time fans of ours are essentially guaranteed to like this episode... and everyone else will, too!

So far my absolute favorite interview. Hearing two of the most well versed experts in their departments discuss these topics was great. Ryan was also asked some really tough questions by Colin about IGN and although many here might feel like he dodged the questions I think he did a fine job. Knowing Ryan's public personality the Man doesn't have an ounce of anger or hatred toward anyone he has worked with. He has a candor to him that extremely empathizes and looks for the best in all people and its probably the same reason he didn't get mad at the editors notes on his Six Days in Fallujah article/interview. Seriously one of the nicest dudes in the entire industry and this demeanor he has is probably the same reason he's one of the only people from IGN to happily jump into this podcast. I truly believe he doesn't view the world as a bunch of secret agendas, and everything being black and white.

Arthur Karapateas

Ryan has always seemed like a cool dude. Great episode

Carlos Moreno

If you're offended by a dad joke I can't take you seriously as a person

Brandon Van Cleave

Who is Ryan to say that Hatred has no artistic value?

Brandon Van Cleave

Great listen, thanks Colin. Loving these interviews and would love more discussions with different industry people.

Ethan Hunt

Looking forward to this one!

Anthony Brothers

Jesus! The pod-episode I’ve always wanted ❤️

Joel Nehlmark

Not a fan of this guy really but that's just me.

GGuice

Great interview. You could really tell Colin was excited to be talking to him. I don't blame the guy for being careful either. When you're in a leadership position, this is a must have skill, because regardless of your personal views or opinions, professionally, you need to maintain some sort professional aura about you. Even some politicians will say "I govern for everyone not just the people who voted for me". This guy has good leadership qualities, its obvious he knows exactly what he's doing and how to go about it. Just my 2 cents.

Michael Size

This was great. Really flew by. Between this and the Jaffe talks, you’re on a roll.

NeO JD

Wow! Love Ryan and have long shared your opinion that he is one of the most insightful, refreshing, and professional people covering video games! Great episode!

king_ryan_james

Great episode although there is one point that was made that I highly disagree with. Always online wouldn't work today there are plenty of places even in our own country that do not have access to high speed Internet or Internet at all.

Wayde

Probably six-figures IGN is based out of San Francisco, so high cost of living. Plus Ryan’s veteran/Senior status

Gustavo Ochoa

Really quality discussion :) huge respect to Ryan for telling his side of the Six Days story

Jeremy Tan

I did it, and I'm not disappointed. Fantastic load times and it's so consistent, you can tell it's not running @4k but it runs so well that it really doesn't matter. CR is spot on with consistent frams over image quality. My next piece is monitor to try titanfall @120

Chris Dell

Awesome discussion and lot of insight! Thanks!

Chris Strommer

Maybe the next patreon goal should be a 'Ryan' goal, 25k subs? 🤣😂

Chris Dell

I really like Ryan, I don't have a love for IGN though. But his work there it's still great. I understand why he can't answer some of these questions though.

Javier Cortés

Fuckin Ryan McCaffrey. Such a rare levelheaded dude that still exists in games "media"

jacob cunningham

Stop being a bigoted PlayStation fan 🤣😂

Al Rodriguez

Yup it’s always cringey as hell.

Was looking forward to this episode but I have to be candid, I felt like this was one of the more disappointing episodes. Not just because he's an Xbox expert coming onto a PlayStation podcast to talk mostly about Xbox, but because it came off feeling like he had a PR guy hovering over his shoulder like a lawyer telling him not to answer particular questions. Of course it's hard to follow Jaffe who was such a breath of fresh air that just came on the show willing to be honest and not politically correct at all. So maybe my assessment isn't fair. One of the things that rubbed me the wrong way was that he openly admitted that he doesn't fully understand what's going on over there yet he supports IGN for putting up a Palestine flag on the site. I thought you nailed it with the statement that gamers are diverse and game media only covers one political spectrum. I personally felt like he had to hold back this episode for fear of repurcussions. I think that's the greatest danger of a media that's an echo chamber. It limits free thought. Ryan did a great job on the fallujah piece and his colleague that's worked there for way shorter length of time wrote over his article correcting him. He absolutely was thrown under the bus. Just my thoughts.

Paul Knickerbocker

Ryan is a really good guy.... But I can't stand when people have to let Colin know they don't agree with his old man joke, it's so harmless, get a sense of humor. He really side stepped the IGN land mine, I get it but it was disappointing.

Brian

I listen to podcast unlocked regularly and find it to be the strongest of IGN's podcasts between the three competing consoles, and unfiltered is great too! Looking forward to checking this one out.

David P

Thanks guys! Learned something great from this. Might as well get a monitor at 1440 p for an Xbox s. Been in the market and want to play flight simulator.

Drew Lee

Base on his Twitter page he comes off as someone who is Center-Left. A moderate liberal, like Bill Clinton, Al Gore kind of guy. Def a guy that can be cancelled at any minute unfortunately. I've been listening to Unlocked since 2014, one listen to one of those episode and you'll see the real Ryan. I am sure he has matured as all of us and has grown bigger hearted because of fatherhood, but nobody changes or becomes that PC over night. Mid 2015 everything started to change. I still listen to the show because of Ryan and Destin. But those two are flitered as hell. The other two guest are always very PC no matter the person. And you could tell they talk with their eyes behind their back, paranoid of being g chopped, Must be exhausting to not be yourself.

Al Rodriguez

Great show, Unlocked is the only IGN podcast I listen to anymore. I enjoyed the discussion about how game journalism has changed in the last decade.

Chris

Another awesome interview with one of the very few fair members of gaming media. Keep these coming!!

Shawn Hayden

Ryan says he's not far left, but he will let them walk all over him when push comes to shove... the Marxists will take control eventually. Hopefully Ryan can retire before he is forced out for "creative differences".

Carson Smith

So hypothetically speaking....What would it take for LSM to get Ryan away from IGN? Money wise or anything else?

Clay Layne

Good interview love ryan knew he wasn’t going to give much about politics or ign. However Ryan’s views about politics I feel is very well head in the clouds ignoring the other side of the argument. I don’t feel like ryan understands what Colin asked him or even if he did he can’t answer it 100% honest. A lot of ign staff have said things and made horrible hot takes about people like me or like Colin so much so some, on his podcast to the point I turned off unlock. I feel like ryan is a normie who just adopts the takes of where he lives and that’s about it. I super happy he ryan talks to Colin but part of me does wonder would he talk to Colin if he never worked at ign.

Adamthm

Thanks for trying to buy Ryan. Will make sure last stand media has the bankroll one day to afford Ryan.

Jordan campos

Im almost done with this episode it’s been awesome so far, but my favorite part was how genuinely nice and caring Ryan was to you Colin. It’s a breath of fresh air seeing someone who is in the mainstream industry just be respectful to you and not treat you like you’re this fictional monster

Kenneth Oms

Awesome job, love the behind the scenes talk and remembering the IGN days. let me just say however that the editors at IGN and the wider leftist movement are not interested in a balanced view toward this conflict. They see only oppressor and the oppressed. To say support both sides victims would be like saying all lives matter.

Tiotheberk

Ryan is such a sweetheart❣️ he always summers like a genuinely great guy.

Andrew

Fantastic! Thank you as always this was very incredible we are a better having herd this interview.

Matthew Major

Ryan is the only reason I followed IGN XBox news and in recent years I have just followed him. While I thoroughly enjoy the guys covering LSM XBox news I had long hoped that Ryan would be the man to helm it. You have such a great rapport with Ryan and I just feel sad that the "industry" is shifting under the feet of such a great man. Sorry for the downer response, looking forward to this one. Be well Colin

Rob Aitken

These interviews have really been scratching the fireside chats itch Colin! Loving em, thank you :)

Kendrick Luckenbach

If Ryan ever gets canceled I’ll double my Patreon contribution just to make sure he’s good on this side ✌️

Remington James

Colin you are absolutely killing it with sacred symbols + lately. Love the content, thank you.

Josef Barker

Damn! I have to wait until my commute home to listen!!

Kevin Corkum

I've been looking forward to this all day.

Frej Karlsson

I used to exclusively listen to Beyond on IGN. After Colin and Greg left I found the best/most improved podcast was Unlocked and do still listen.

DeucesBruh

Cant wait to listen

AYOO!
