KnockBack, Episode 171: The Woods

As you know, we (The Brothers Moriarty) grew up on Long Island, nestled between the water and the woods. It's the latter that we thought we'd focus this particular episode on. We absolutely adore the woods. Playing, hiking, exploring. We basically lived amongst the trees as children! Thus, we thought it would be fun to regale you with some stories of our past being in the woods: Boy Scouts, mountain biking, BMXing, and running away from fictional foes. Discovering new things, using our imaginations, getting to know ourselves and others... and maybe catching some poison ivy, too. Are you an arborist like we are? Only one way to find out.

 KnockBack, Episode 171: The Woods

Was living in Latvia eastern Europe when was kid. Nature was big part in growing up. All early sneaking out with friends ended up in forest. Going for a swim in lake was true forest. Even when U live in city with shops and streets nature was close enough to enjoy it. Thanks god we have no bears anymore but U could see wolfs or fox every week or so. Sad its not possible to enjoy for my kids in Ireland now. well ... at least i can tell them about good old days haha.

Ha ha ha. Well someone had to say it. Actually I grew up in Northern Ontario so I also spent lots of time playing in the woods as a kid. Building tree forts out of random pieces of wood found about, playing all kinds of imaginary war games etc; Playing with walky-talkies, seeing how far they'd go... "Oh crap was that a bear I just heard?" lol

Michael Size

I have no doubt it annoys the builders. I'm not a participant myself... except that one time. =)

Colin Moriarty

It's shocking that we didn't.

Colin Moriarty

It's a calling to nature, I think.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you. <3

Colin Moriarty

Well, that didn't go where I expected it to.

Colin Moriarty

How did that not come up?

Colin Moriarty

I don't know about you guys, but when I was a kid whenever I was in the Forrest, the sound of the trees creaking in the breeze or even just the silent majesty of it all made me feel like I had to pee.

Michael Size

When I first saw the topic I expected it to eventually lead into finding porn in the woods, like they talk about in Sex Criminals (comic).

NeO JD

Excellent pod as always boys. I could listen to Dagan and Colin shoot the shit for hours upon hours and not get bored of it!

Dylan Weaver

Over the past few years I've really gotten into the outdoors and hiking and shit. My family never did any of that stuff growing up. You're right though, there is something that draws you to it when you're there. 🍄

lazer_josh

I'm surprised you guys didn't talk about finding random porn magazines in the woods.

Cool episode, liked it. About throwing trash in the construction dumpsters, that is definitely aggravating the builders, haha... Dumpsters aren't always readily available and are expensive. Sometimes we can't fully clean up a jobsite as we finish framing the house because homeowners have filled up our dumpster, so the superintendent has to order a replacement and we have to come back like a week later and finish cleaning. One superintendent got so pissed off about it that he started going through the trash, figured out who it belonged too and then put it back on their porches.

Colin Moriarty

That's too obscure for me to understand.

Colin Moriarty

That rules.

Colin Moriarty

I'm glad you decided to listen!

Colin Moriarty

Glad to hear it. =)

Colin Moriarty

Certainly. Exposure, then let them make their choices...

Colin Moriarty

Definitely. I love the woods, man!

Colin Moriarty

We may have!

Colin Moriarty

Hope you enjoy. =)

Haven’t listened to this episode yet but I look forward to it. In the 90s, I grew up in a house on a 5 acre property in Washington state. Lots of memories playing in the woods with friends, pretending to be the cool characters I loved in 90s cartoons, movies and video games.

Alex Gould

I legit thought at first glance this was going to be about the Sleater-Kinney album…

The Boy Scout stories were suuuuper nostalgic for me, holy shit. Troop 4 from Maryland, represent

In the woods, We had a full on army battalion. We role played war all the time, the older kids were the captains and generals giving us younger kids orders. It soon turned into paintball wars in our middle school years. Man I miss those days

I was so close to just being like, “nah, I’ll pass on this right now,” on this episode and then I realized that when COVID-19 became a thing last year, my wife and I turned to the outdoors with my (at the time) 4-year-old daughter. I spent a lot of time in the wooded area behind a cemetery by my house (mid-Ohio area) when I was a child and had so many cool memories. I know we turned last year from a thing that could have been a terrible memory for a 4yo into a thing that she’ll never forget because it was so new and exciting. As winter was beginning to wrap up, she started talking about salamander hunting and “creeking” again. It has definitely struck a real love of the outdoors with her that I hope she carries forever. Dagan, I can’t speak for all people born from ‘80 - ‘85 (1983 here) - the “geriatric Millenials” apparently - but I can tell you that when my wife and I were discussing how we would parent, we settled on what we call “80’s parenting,” where we’re a bit “looser” than a lot of folks - not quite as reactionary to dirt and scrapes, we are outdoors until the street lights turn on in the summer (sometimes later), and imaginary play is absolutely essential. You never know if you’re doing it “right,” but we feel like we’re raising her similarly to how we grew up in the late 80’s and early 90’s - and we think we came out ok. Hopefully this “full circle” really is a thing and we can find more like-minded parents as things open back up from COVID.

It seems like paying for “junk removal” might cost the same as paying off the garbage men. I paid some guy 50$ to get rid of a bunch of stuff when I moved once. Also, I love episodes like these

As a father of an 8 year old who loves to game Dagan hit it right on the head! Def want to introduce them to things outside of the house so they could be balanced socially and have an all around understanding of things, but as someone who grew up playing games there are many positives that come with it. In this day and age its possible to make a career out of video games whether through content creation, programming or any interests that can be inspired by something they see in a game.

Michael Buffill

Ohhhhhhh!!!

The woods are magical for kids with big imaginations. It brings to life a sense of exploration that fades with age and knowledge. But even as we grow up, there's always a little bit of that childhood nostalgia that a walk through the woods can bring back.

James McGivern

Coram native myself. Lived pretty close to moriarty bros. Born in 91. Maybe we ran into each other at sports plus b4 haha. Miss that place. My childhood arcade experience were all there. Looking forward to this later 😀

Sean P

These are always my favorite types of episodes (especially as someone who grew up on the other side of the country in the 90s). Can't wait to listen later today!

Josh Gamez
