Sacred Symbols+, Episode 95: NieR Replicant Spoilercast and Review Discussion

NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139... is a bit of an odd release- a self-proclaimed "version update" to a 2010 RPG that suffered poor sales and critical reception at the time. While the original became somewhat of a cult classic despite its shortcomings, it wasn't until the highly successful 2017 sequel NieR: Automata that the franchise became a huge hit around the globe. Now with the millions of new fans of the IP, publisher Square Enix and developer Toy Logic have gone back to shine up and add to the original release for modern audiences. With three NieR: Automata mega fans on staff at Last Stand, it was clear from the moment this game was announced that we were going to need to have a good long discussion around it after release. I (Dustin) was so excited to bring on YouTube's RPG best boi MrMattyPlays and for the first time ever, LSM's associate producer Ben Smith for this conversation. We hope you enjoy it!

If you'd like to hear our overall impression of the game without spoilers, the first 20 minutes or so of the show is spoiler-free with a clear audio warning of when spoilers begin.

Eight Minutes (8:00) in to get to the actual Nier franchise content.

I was disappointed to hear that no one finished 100% of the side quests. I know they can be a real pain, but under that pain lies some great world building and excellent immersion within a hopeless world. I at least hope all of you guys finished the lighthouse ladies’ side quests. Those quests were probably one of my favorite parts of Nier Replicant. Anyways, I still greatly enjoyed the podcast, great work guys!

The Emil in Ending E is the original Emil that was with the gang during the entirety of the game. He only begins splitting himself into copies once the Aliens begin attacking thousands of years later. I really hope they don't 'fill in the gaps' between the ending of Drakengard 1 and the beginning of Nier Replicant. I think the gaps have already been filled enough by the files you find in Replicant and the exposition Emil's story gives. I think it would be much more interesting to have a story that bridges the gap between Automata and Drakengard 3, since I believe that the worlds of Drakengard and Nier are stuck in a big 'time loop'. In Automata, the "Kingdom of Night", which is located on the opposite side of Earth from where the events of Automata takes place, is briefly mentioned. Apparently, "Dragon" weapons were created in the Kingdom of Night to help them fight off the Aliens, so I think something goes horribly wrong at some point and the dragons, other magical creatures, and futuristic buildings get "zapped" into the world of Drakengard. The reason the world of Drakengard is so messed up is due to a 'Cataclysm' occurring prior to the events of the games, which caused a futuristic city, dragons/monsters, and magic to show up in the world. I think it's only logical that they tell the story of how this happened, since they could use it as a way to familiarize people with the world of Drakengard (leading to remakes of those games?)

So it is not very clear in the game (to me, at least)....but Kaine dresses that way because she has both male and female genitals. During the replicant process, there was a mistake. That is why she was treated like a freak by the town. This is why she dresses the way she does. She identifies as a woman and wants to throw it in their face. I dont blame you guys for completely missing it, but there it is Edit...nevermind, you guys did bring it up after the fact. Not sure why it wasn't part of the main conversation about that commenter being distracted by her outfit

I have this game sitting on my Tv stand. But I’m waiting to finish Atelier Ryza 2 and Yazuka like a dragon first. Who has time for JRPGs honestly! I’m happy Dagan can help cover these types of games. Thank you.

I'd love to see them bridge the gap between when the Dragon came to NieR's world and the creation of Project Gestalt but I doubt we'd ever see that story. That said, a game literally titled "NieR: Drakengard" would be a smart idea, then they could do a Drakengard Remaster or collection. Also, I wish I wrote in about it, but worth noting that in some of the Journal Entries, Yonah mentions meeting Accord. A VERY important character from Drakengard 3 that could bridge this entire franchise together.

Shout out to Ben for jumping on the episode! I actually thought he had the best takes and did best in what I think a spoiler cast should be

I got ending A and B in Automata and got burnt out. I just beat Replicant through ending E. Should I go back and pick up where I left off on Automata or start over all the way?
