Sacred Symbols+, Episode 107: Studying the Accusations Against Activision-Blizzard

For several years now, the games industry has been going through a tectonic shift -- in parallel with industries all around the world -- attempting to right the wrongs of archaic and sometimes sexist and discriminatory corporate cultures. In gaming, most of this attention has rightly been foisted upon the likes of Ubisoft and even long-time Sony partner Quantic Dream, but it's Activision-Blizzard that's under the newest (and perhaps severest) scrutiny. This is well above our paygrade to discuss in any meaningful way on the normal show, which is why we reserved an hour-long chat on + all about what's happening with California's myriad complaints against The House of Call of Duty. And who better to walk us all through it than Last Stand Media's newest (and so far only!) 'contributor,' lawyer Rick Hoeg.

Comments

Maybe don't be gung ho about defending people accused of sexual harassment? Lmao.

We'll have another episode coming shortly. =)

Colin Moriarty

Can't wait to listen. The internal blizzard chat truly has been a sight to behold during this whole thing.

Shoulder

Thank you. <3

Colin Moriarty

Not that many, if any, personalities in this space have the intellectual honesty to say, "i'm not really qualified to talk about this topic in the way that I want, so I have hired an expert to come on and do that." I respect that a lot.

Guybrush Threepwood

Thanks for listening. =)

Colin Moriarty

Thank you!

Colin Moriarty

Great episode. Hoeg is the best.

Derek Alcott

Awesome episode. I’ll just say from the perspective of a grunt in the field, trips to the HR office were usually a welcome reprieve from the weather, noise, morons, and all around toil of a normal workday.

Kyle

Thank you, that's very kind of you to say!

Colin Moriarty

Ya.

Colin Moriarty

Allegedly

Michael Thew

I don't comment often but wanted to say that Last Stand Media content is the best!! Not sure how I'd live without it.

Joseph Baker

Hoagie boi is back

Piston Pants

I don't know much about the Cosby situation, honestly.

Colin Moriarty

We'll track it and have him back as more information develops.

Colin Moriarty

I agree!

Colin Moriarty

Thank you. <3

Colin Moriarty

I don't want to make it seem like we're trying to make money off of contentious topics, because we're not. But we're still going to cover them!

Colin Moriarty

That's really awful.

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, the alcohol thing is especially weird, and that's why I recalled my own time in the industry, where it was flowing everywhere, all the time.

Colin Moriarty

Stay cool! We're glad to be here for you.

Colin Moriarty

All I’m going to say is that Pennsylvania went gung-ho after Bill Cosby, thought they were above the law, cut corners, broke laws for the greater “good” and now not only is he out but he’s going to sue the shit out of them. Just be careful and remember public opinion has no place in law.

Michael Thew

As always, Richard kills it with his analysis. VERY interested to see where this case goes, and if they’ll settle before anything is uncovered.

Braeden Burge

Very good discussion, guys. Glad you have Richard as a contributor now. This type of nuance is needed for something like this.

Billy Wright

This is what makes LSM such a special place. Insight, candor, integrity. All qualities worthy of anyone willing to create their own place to Stand. Excellent coverage, Hoeg is a treasure.

BlindRiot

Very insightful and objective conversation with a lot of nuance on the topic and lawsuit itself. On a personal note I can't help but feel utterly disgusted by what I read and as Chris said on the previous show, even if a quarter of what is claimed is true, what a disgrace. Thanks as always, LSM. Opening up this episode to everyone was the right move - respect.

Julian Zhu

What is unfair about a three years long investigation and now deliberation? Activision will have the ability to defend themselves, or settle if the evidence is overwhelming.

Julian Zhu

Listening and very interesting, but he did miss that the woman who committed suicide allegedly had pictures of her vagina passed around the office which was the harassment that may have contributed to her suicide

Nygile Oliver

What truly could spell disaster better than allowing alcohol on tap at work, while employing young men and women, who work long hours and probably see each other more than their own families. Also many of these devs have probably never really matured mentally or emotionally. They have been to busy dedicating all their time towards their passion.

Carson Smith

Thanks for the content, guys! The air conditioning has been out at my work the past two days and I’m the building and grounds supervisor. It’s been stressful lol so your content has helped make it easier to deal with

king_ryan_james

Oh , It looks like California might be losing more companies. Nothing seems to be fair no a days as far a do process.

Hose A Contra Razz

I don't disagree with you. Thankfully, we don't get into the guilt and innocence of individuals on this show, but rather what California's action means, what their accustations against Acti-Blizz were, etc.

Colin Moriarty

Every individual and every company is guilty upon tweet/accusation in Trial By Twitter. Even Jaffe participates in this lynch mob without due process mentality. So tired of this s**t. Guess I'm nostalgic for the good old days where we actually deliberated evidence in courtrooms and received proper verdicts.
