Among the changes, the most significant is a drastically smaller heat sink. This was first uncovered by Jimmy Champane of PSReady and YouTuber Austin Evans in a video that caused quite the controversy. So what's really going on here? I (Dustin) invited Jimmy on to discuss their findings and the backlash around the video. We also dive into the state of PlayStation 5 hardware and where we see things going in the future. and now another video by ars technica has come out showing that the new PS5 is in fact doing a BETTER job at cooling by expelling more heat. Who could've guessed? Why do proper research when you can just make assumptions?

Don’t name your video the PS5 is worse and then act like you don’t know where the uproar is coming from. Jimmy even says he doesn’t really know if that claim was answered because he’s basically a lament as far as tech goes. He even has the nerve to claim that the Xbox runs hotter but it cools better. But he says he doesn’t know if that true!

2021-09-08 10:01:44 +0000 UTCThe only thing Digital Foundry disagreed with is that it would impact performance or make the new PS5 “worse”. They confirmed the reduction in materials and mass used and agreed that it could result in higher temperatures that are still within manufacturer tolerances

2021-09-08 08:59:16 +0000 UTCAre you aware of what a heatsink is, and how it functions? The “assumption” IS NOT just because of the exhaust temperature, it’s about what’s found inside. There is NO tech product on earth that has ever, EVER, used a smaller heatsink to cool the same SoC, with the same fans and all other variables being the same, but magically had higher cooling efficiency. Name me one. I’ll wait. The “experts” weighing in on this are being myopic about recording the exhaust temperature. Yes, on its own, that doesn’t mean anything. Combined with the fact that the heatsink being used to cool the same chip is ~30% smaller? Yeah, it’s an essential guarantee. There is literally less thermal mass to absorb and disperse the heat output of the SoC. So the mass that is there heats up to a higher temperature, resulting in the hotter exhaust as air is pushed through the fins to remove the heat. That IS actually how cooling systems using air cooling with fans and heatsinks works. Not how it works with a vapor chamber. Not how it works with a radiator. But how it works with a heatsink. What does the PS5 use for its cooling system? Say it with me slowly - a heatsink. You’re wrong. Austin is also wrong, because he suggested it could impact performance, and that’s completely untrue because the PS5 clocks aren’t heat dependent. You’re both wrong, and this argument is f**king stupid anyway. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk

This is the whole reason the video was controversial. Not because it upset fanboys or was clickbait but because the conclusions found within are not accurate There's a reason actual experts are calling the video out, not just tribalistic fanboys

You just brushed it off as "it upset fanboys" and never bothered to mention how many influencers including actual experts like digital foundry and NX gamer refuted the conclusions made by the video. Not only that, but Dustin agreed with the misinformation the video presented. I was expecting something very different tbh.

Sadly, from listening to this one, Jimmy is not an expert on Playstation or other consoles/pc hardware. There's definitely more than an air of supposition and misinformation throughout most of the podcast. It's probably better to get someone like Tom from MLID back in again, next time. Or just refer people on to Gamer Nexus or Digital Foundry (as the boys normally do).

Putting out more heat does not equal to more heat being on the components. Aluminum is just as good as copper. Stop making a mountain out of a molehill. It's pretty obvious that Austin has always been an Xbox Fanboy. End of subject

I do wish you could have gotten Austin Evans himself since he’s such a big personality in the tech world, but I’ll take any convo surrounding this topic. It’s also a fascinating case study in the mind of tribalistic fanboys, and how willing they are to ignore the laws of physics themselves in order to maintain denial. The new PS5 model runs hotter. That doesn’t mean it impacts performance. But it definitely runs hotter - it has a smaller heat sink but an equivalently powerful SoC. It’s impossible for it not to.
