KnockBack, Episode 187: The Incredible Hulk (film)

Marvel's vaunted Cinematic Universe had a more inauspicious start than many may remember, and in fact, the first two MCU films came to theaters mere months apart in 2008. A few weeks ago, we covered Iron Man, the first of those two movies, and so this week we're on to the Edward Norton-led and surprisingly contentious standalone Incredible Hulk film. Its contentiousness is surprising because this movie is actually quite good, though stories about turbulent production may have soured this picture's memory (not to mention some recasts). Nonetheless, we have much to discuss here, including the representation of the Hulk himself, the film's significant anti-war message, some pretty great performances from some very famous actors, and more. The ball's in your court, Mr. Green. Just hit play.

So good to see you’re enjoying these, can’t wait for you to see how much better they get!

David Lawler

We'll get there. =)

Colin Moriarty

I can't wait until you get to Captain America. Particularly the Winter Soldier. You are gonna love them as a fellow history lover and their darker tones.

Alexander Ivarson

If you end up watching it check out this YouTube video shortly after: https://youtu.be/jEX52h1TvuA Mind boggling stuff

Nicholas Coso

I've not, but heard good things.

Colin Moriarty

For some reason I didn’t know that Willy Wonka was one of your favorite films. Have you seen Snowpiercer

Nicholas Coso

So far, it's been a tasteful mix of CG and practical. I'm not too worried, because at least CG will have gotten better the longer the MCU goes on.

Colin Moriarty

We'll see. =)

It’ll be interesting to see how you react going forward as the films get more and more reliant on CGI and suspension of disbelief with every phase of movies. I’ll give you an example. RDJ wears a full practical Ironman suit in the first film. By the second movie it’s a half suit, half mocap suit to allow free movement of his legs. By the current films his suit may as well be magic. How much it affects your enjoyment is based on if you care about the characters or not which I feel Marvel are pretty good at doing.

Here’s something that doesn’t make much sense in my head now that I think about it. The point of the experiments that lead to the Hulk was General Ross trying to replicate the super soldier serum that created Captain America yet he has some form of super soldier serum or something similar that he gives to Blonksy. So what the hell is going on?

If you think this is top-tier, I can’t wait for you to get to the real top-tier MCU films. You’re in for a ride my friend. Although, Iron Man 2 is next and that’s gonna be 😕

NeO JD

Without a doubt, my favorite show of all time. I think a lot of people had trouble with the first season being too depressing (I honestly don't understand this), but nearly everyone I know that gave 2 and 3 a shot ended up loving it

Ryan Zimm

That would be fun to get to, but we have a lot on the list in the interim.

Colin Moriarty

I can't imagine being interested in that movie, but we'll see.

Colin Moriarty

Interesting.

Colin Moriarty

It's in my top two so far. =)

Colin Moriarty

Right.

Colin Moriarty

See, I think I'm gonna feel the exact opposite.

Colin Moriarty

I was stoked to hear you bring up The Leftovers, I wanted to write in a suggestion to have it in Knockback. It’s only 3 seasons so it’s pretty easily digestible, I’d be really curious to hear your thoughts. It quickly landed a place in my top 10 favorite shows.

Ethan Barbee

Tim Roth actually reprises his role in the most recent MCU movie, Shang-Chi, he’s also slated to appear in the She-Hulk series along with Ruffalo so it’ll be interesting to see how they bring these characters back together after so long.

A recent episode of What If suggests Iron Man 2, Hulk and Thor take place in the same week so Hulk takes place after Iron Man. Also there is an official Zelda timeline that makes sense until BOTW ruins it. I believe Ocarina of Time splits it into 3 different timelines based on Link winning, losing and young Link disappearing when he goes into the future.

Kaleb

Actually one of my favorite MCU movies. Top 3. Took it’s character seriously enough that I appreciated the story they were trying to tell.

Kendrick Calles (Ca-Yes)

Small correction, Disney has purchased Fox. So Disney now owns the X-men as well.

Bogey Zero

Definitely the black sheep in the MCU but I enjoyed it. Still strikes me as weird not seeing Ruffalo as Hulk though.
