KnockBack, Episode 190: Ninja Scroll

Comments

Finally listened to this episode, really enjoyed it. Think knock back is becoming my favourite show. Keep it up guys! Had to watch the film for the first time in over a few decades. One thing I’d have to disagree on is, I believe Street Fighter the Animated movie should have been in that top three of anime films to convert the west. Ghost in the shell got a cult following years later which gave birth to many follow ups which came a long time after the original. We already knew the stories of the Street Fighter characters from the games…this just gave us all the filler we wanted and needed. Would be great to one day see this on an episode.

This was an awesome episode. Ninja scroll was my first anime I enjoyed in 94 after akira. Akira never hit for me but ninja scroll was so cool at the time being 17 years old and finding animation could be adult. I started to rent anime from my locals and they were nowhere near as good and I drifted off from anime. (Ghost in the shell and patlabor were exceptions). It was only until attack on titan in the late oughts that I even started watching anime again.

James Sprules

It was excellent as always, guys

Hope you enjoyed the episode!

Yeah man, who the fuck wants to roll out of bed and eat?!

Just watched this for the first time for this episode. I don't know how I missed this film throughout my years. Akira-levels of awesome. Excited to hear your guys thoughts and experience. Postshow edit: to answer your question to the audience Dagan, I got introduced into anime through the cowboy bebop film as a young teen which I stumbled upon without having watched any of the series haha. After that it was over as the series followed, then Akira, GITS and stand alone, original gundam series and zeta gundam, vampire hunter d, monster and then all the shounen that was airing at the time here. Those first few anime definitely set my expectations but I don't find myself dissapointed often as the industry puts out pretty high quality seinen imo, just gotta look.

I enjoyed the food talk. Thought I was the only one to skip breakfast due to lack of hunger in the morning. Good to know I'm not alone.

Good to know!

Colin Moriarty

Awesome, thank you.

Colin Moriarty

Also Collin! The current image we as Americans have of the “ninja” is actually from a James Bond movie in the 60’s! Learned this doing a deep dive after my play thru of ghost of Tsushima! Keep up the good work love listening to u guys.

Love knockback it’s slowly becoming my favorite lsm show!

Name some, because I’ve not seen anything anywhere near as good. I think it’s probably more down to a matter of taste. Nothing will beat the style and craft of the 80’s and 90’s Anime for me.

Shaun Wilkinson

Maybe selective memory but anime movies release every year with better animation than Ninja Scroll

Kaleb

Absolutely. The love and dedication to the craft was on a different level back then.

Shaun Wilkinson

A lot of effort went into this film.

Colin Moriarty

This film blew me away as a teenager back in 1995 (Manga Entertainment UK release date) and it’s still one of my favourite Anime films of all time. The quality of the animation is just incredible, like many of the great Anime films of the 80’s and 90’s. It’s such a shame that we don’t see this quality hardly at all these days.
