Constellation, Episode 47 | Handheld Gaming, Laughing Fits, Cooking at Home, Antisemitism

Welcome one-and-all to another episode of Constellation, Last Stand's conversational podcast. This week, the Brothers Moriarty are joined by LSM executive producer Dustin Furman and horror YouTuber Jimmy Champane. Colin starts things off in earnest with a conversation about the recent rise in antisemitism in the west. This isn't about Israel and Palestine -- that's its own thing, and it's an issue far too complex for this show -- but what isn't complicated is truly seeing people as individuals, and not as parts of evermore-subdivided groups. Changing the tone entirely, we move to Dagan. The topic? Humor. What makes us laugh? It's an easy enough question to conceptualize, and yet it's deeper than mere subject matter when it comes to the times in our lives when we laugh 'til we cry. Our guest Jimmy talks about a subject near-and-dear to all of our hearts here on this episode: Handheld gaming. Let's go through our respective histories with handhelds from Sony, Nintendo, SEGA, and beyond, and why we fell in love with lo-fi gaming. Finally, Dustin wraps things up with a food-related topic that left us hungry by episode's end. What do our daily meals look like, specifically when it comes to dinner? How do we switch things up, and what are our classic go-to selections? The answers may surprise you.

What was the movie Jimmy was talking about that's delisted or something like that

I moved away from handheld gaming - I use the Switch docked 99% of the time but the ROG Ally has gotten me back into Handheld gaming this year - having a companion handheld is exactly what I needed vs. a dedicated handheld for one ecosystem.

Every time I see these topic lists it’s always “one of these things is not like the other” playing in my head.

It's just like the episode awhile back where Colin and (I think Gene) were talking about politicians for like 40 minutes and then Micah is all "what's your favorite type of ice cream?" Lol

Josh Gamez

"... And then she SUMMONS A DEMON" is something that I'll never forget lol

Josh Gamez

German people not allowed to have an opinion in 2023 . OK 👌

Kenny C

I can’t be the only one that thought of the grapefruit technique video for Colin with laughing fits. That’s an all time video right there

Kyle Day

I KNEW i recognized Jimmy’s voice. He’s the face of a big Steam Deck YouTube channel lmao. Loved having him on the show, have more Jimmy!

Really enjoyed the talk on Antisemitism. The sentiment that Israel/Palestine is one of the most complicated situations we’ve experienced definitely rings true to me, but at the same time I’m so baffled that this extremely out of hand mess of a conflict comes down to hatred towards other religions or races. These are two extremely basic and stupid things to start wars over. I care about another person’s, let alone nation’s, religion about as much as their favorite flavor of ice cream. You have all the US/Euro meddling in the Middle East that you can point to as a root cause but I’m so confused that we still have such hatred towards people for their race and religion.

Anthony Palerino

Indigenous people returning to their original homeland isn't inspiring? The Maoris, Berbers, Native Americans, Tibetans, Kurds, and so many more, could only dream of having their own Israel.

Despite the efforts of some radicals and extremists, it absolutely does work

Antisemitism is always going to exist. Just like racism, murder, etc. The issue I’ve personally seen online are ppl getting called antisemitic just for questioning our involvement over there. There’s definitely real antisemitic sentiments out there, but that just goes to show that diversity and this “melting pot” myth everybody spews is baloney. Multiculturalism doesn’t work.

ChristianLikeTheReligion

Jimmy you are 100% right about Detroit. Holy fuck Dearborne is full of people that absolutely can't fucking drive. That's something they need to work on lol

I think time stamps would be a great addition, especially, for this show.

Before people engage in whataboutism regarding antisemitism as a topic—as is so extraordinarily common—bare in mind the following points: 1. Because of reactions like yours, antisemitism is rarely explored as a topic of discourse in good faith, especially in this space. LSM has been perhaps the only gaming-adjacent outlet to ever do so in the last 5-10 years. 2. Comparing the scale of antisemitism to any other form of hatred is intellectually dishonest. Jewish people make up 2.4% of the US population (.2% of the world) yet have been targeted in ~60-70% of religiously-motivated hate crimes (not to mention that Jewishness is an ethnoreligion) in the last 5 or so years. This is an outlier compared to the second most targeted group, being Muslims at around 15-20%. This isn’t a dig at Islam whatsoever. It’s a fact. This is prior to the explosion of the I/P conflict in the Western conscious, and includes violent/destructive hate crimes on both the right and left that are not justifiable as antizionism. Read those number again. 3. Antisemitism differentiates itself from other topics of large-scale prejudice because of its cyclical, millennia old nature. The genocide and/or expulsion of Jews didn’t start or end with the Nazis. From an academic and social perspective, it’s an admittedly fascinating albeit morbid topic to discuss. 4. You don’t recognize the rhetoric being weaponized against Jews in this day and age because you were never taught to identify it for your own survival. Every Jew I know is terrified for their future and wellbeing at this time. Every single one. Myself included. 5. If your knee-jerk reaction to hearing about antisemitism is to push back, go fuck yourself. You’re part of the problem. — Thank you LSM for being the ONLY major geek/gaming outlet to ever discuss antisemitism in a serious and caring manner. I am eternally grateful for such content. This is the only such community I feel comfortable engaging in/with because of it.

I burst out laughing when I read antisemitism, I was listing the topics while reading the title in my head like “oh this looks like a fun episode we got handheld gaming, laughing fits, cooking and..ANTISEMITISM.”😂😂one of these things ain’t like the others

Thomas Connolly

I’ve yet to hear anybody articulate a point that would make me pro isreal.

ShinyRyuji

The fact that some can't bear hearing antisemitism being discussed without engaging in whataboutism only highlights the issue even more to me. Thank you for choosing this topic Colin.

Adam Barnes

Yeah bro, Israel is definitely the only one treating people poorly rn.

Adam Barnes

Two things on the antisemitism issue. 1. What Hamas did was not a military operation. It was a terrorist attack. 2. If Israel didn’t respond, they might win some brownie points from foreign governments, but Hamas wouldn’t stop attacking until they were all dead. Hamas has said as much. The passive mindset is not one that brings peace, but ultimately leads to the death of all the Jewish people in Israel.

Caleb Shelton

It’s weird to me that so many liberals in colleges are so pro-Palestine, that they are now spouting antisemitism. You can be pro-Palestine without being antisemitic. There’s bad on both sides, and nobody wants to see innocent people die, on either side. Hopefully can they come to a peaceful resolution.

Brandon Garvin

Hearing Dagan say "fuckin retarded" made me laugh so hard because I'd never expect hear that come out of his mouth lmao

Guns vs Kittens

It’s funny seeing the same people who had nothing to say for decades of anti-muslim bigotry and racism post 9/11 but are quick to talk about Antisemitism just because people are criticizing Israel’s actions.

Joe

There is nothing funnier than Mike Stoklasa just dying of laughter just from watching old people exist.
