Punching Up, Episode 15 | Super Mario RPG: A Classic Reborn

Originally released for the Super Nintendo in 1996, Super Mario RPG is back in 2023 with a full remake for the Nintendo Switch. While the graphics are completely remade, along with quality-of-life updates, pre-rendered cutscenes, and newly recorded music, the remake remains faithful to the aesthetic and feel of the original. So, what does the Punching Up crew think? In this episode, we dive deep into the new release and our thoughts so far. As always, we love hearing from you as well, so we've incorporated your questions and comments into the show. What’s next for Mario mixed with RPGs? Are classic RPG elements lost on new players? What are our favorite games to play in a party setting? Will Dustin approach the man with the One Piece car wrap? A new episode of Punching Up is here, so hit play!

I like listening to Gene’s takes on the Yakuza and Judgment series. This man plays games DEEPLY

Dagan hasn’t finished TOTK? Get the feeling if he hasn’t finished it by now it’s likely not for him.

I’m playing OoT for first time at the moment, holds up really well but a fresh paint job would do it a world of justice

We need a Mario Metroidvania

Jet Force Gemini has one of the most specific superlatives that I can think of in gaming, which is “Best Character Select Screen Music.” Seriously, the track that plays when you’re picking your character is a BANGER. I used to not even start the game just so I could jam out to the music.

Fantastic episode, as always. Thoroughly enjoyed it. One minor nitpick I have is just that the complaints about the Last of Us remasters and remakes is getting a bit tired at this point. I get that some people don’t want to pay for them, but I don’t know why every time the topic of remakes and remasters comes up that we have to continue to find ways to take shots at The Last of Us. It’s just getting a little old at this point hearing it over and over again.

Dustin, as a huge Rock Band fan, I strongly advise you to NOT upgrade to RB4, especially for the current investment required. There’s much more fun to be had on the 360 version you have thanks to the customs community. I upgraded with my 360 DLC library at RB4’s release, but went back once I discovered the amazing custom community making Harmonix-quality versions of thousands of songs including bands they could never get officially like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. They have even converted to RB3 the full song lists of other games like Beatles Rock Band, Guitar Hero Metallica, Rock Band 4 (and all the DLC). All you need to make it happen is set up a USB drive using software created by the community which you load songs onto and plug into your 360 with an older RB3 title update file included (no modding needed). The community just migrated to a new site at rhythmverse.co where you can find thousands of custom songs and you can find things like RB4 and DLC conversions on the RB4-to-RB3 Discord here: https://discord.com/invite/gbvaKrrvyV

After staring for 350+ hours at BotW and TotK, I’d probably kms if they remade OoT in that engine.

Watch out for Micah with her Majin Buu spinning hubcaps. 😄

I think a Super Smash Bros RPG would be amazing. Already have the huge character roster to utilize
